I've covered crime for The Detroit News for two decades, and as you can imagine, I've got quite a few stories to tell. The crime beat can be tough to deal with -- especially in a violent city like Detroit -- but it also gives me the chance to tell the stories of honorable people trying to raise families in neighborhoods where gunshots are heard more often than ice cream truck bells. I was raised in such a neighborhood: Detroit's Cass Corridor, which for years was the city's red-light district. While I grew up to become a cop reporter, three of my siblings became Detroit cops. I think our upbringing helped us in our respective jobs, because we understand what it's like to live in a neighborhood where you can get shot for looking at someone the wrong way.
