Neil Peart

Audible Editor Scott J. on Neil Peart:

"Neil Peart’s passing is an immeasurable loss for both the music and literary communities. He was the drummer everyone air drummed to, his parts as unique and memorable as any of Rush’s famous guitar licks or vocal hooks. As a drummer myself, coming of age in the shadow of the classic rock era, I measured my playing against his intricate rhythms. I spent hours in my parents' basement trying to master the intro to 'YYZ' to impress my high school bandmates. But it wasn’t just his drumming that made its mark on me. As Rush’s lyricist, he drew on his love of science fiction for their rock opera 2112 and later grew to pen more personal, emotional songs like 'Nobody’s Hero.' In 1997, his daughter died in a car accident, followed by his wife’s death from cancer only 10 months later. At that point Peart retired from music and embarked on a solo motorcycle journey through North America, which he chronicled in his book Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road. Cleansed, he returned to Rush in 2001 and continued writing music, lyrics, and literature. Rush’s final record, Clockwork Angels, was a steampunk concept album. Peart later teamed with sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson to publish the novelization based on his lyrics, proving that until the end, he remained an artist with more brilliant ideas than one art form could contain."
