Paul Solman

I've been covering business and economics for the PBS NewsHour since 1985, my stories appearing every Thursday on the program as part of my "Making Sen$e" reporting. A graduate of Brandeis University (BA, Sociology, 1966), where I was editor of the school newspaper, "The Justice," I became founding editor of the alternative Boston weekly The Real Paper in 1972 and was East Coast editor of Mother Jones Magazine in the late '70s. My career in business journalism began on a Nieman Fellowship in 1976-7, which I used to join the Harvard Business school MBA class of ’78, my career as a business reporter beginning immediately thereafter. I was the co-originator and executive editor of the PBS business documentary series, ENTERPRISE. My work has won various awards, including Emmys in the ‘70s, ‘80s, ’90s, and '00s, two Peabody Awards and a Loeb award for reporting on China. Curiously, I was named a member of TV Guide's television news all-time “Dream Team." In the 1980s, I served on the Harvard Business School faculty, teaching media, finance and business history in the school’s Advanced Management Program and was Richman Distinguished Visiting Professor at Brandeis in 2011. I co-authored a better-than-average-seller, Life and Death on the Corporate Battlefield (1983), which appeared in Japanese, German and a pirated Taiwanese edition. With sociologist Morrie Schwartz, I helped create -- and wrote the introduction to -- the book “Morrie: In His Own Words,” which preceded “Tuesdays with Morrie” but failed to outsell it by one or two orders of magnitude. I've written for numerous periodicals, from Mother Jones to Forbes. I've also been teaching at Yale since 2007 as Brady-Johnson Distinguished Fellow in Grand Strategy and at New Haven's Gateway Community College, where I run the Yale@Gateway program.
