Rufi Thorpe grew up in California, the only child of a single mother. She attended Phillips Exeter Academy, then moved to New York at the age of 16 to attend Eugene Lang College at the New School, where she majored in Literature and Creative Writing. After receiving her MFA from The University of Virginia, she returned to California, where she met her husband and began teaching.
