Rivoting and spine tingling.
Masterful story teller Mr Iles has woven the events of one family's terror filled life, dramatic, suspenseful, heartwarming, chilling and brave as they manage to survive. Brilliant narrator Dick Hill brings these charactors to life in such a captivating and intriguing manner that one can hardly stop listening. One of the very best novels it has been my privilege to listen to. These two Iles and Hill, what a winning compination. Bring on more.

Exciting Book, so well read
This one kept me wanting more. The bad guys were very scary and yet one was quite likable at times. The characters are so well fleshed out, you feel like you know what makes each of them tick; you find yourself often cheering on the good guys.
This book keeps the listener on the edge of her/his seat throughout.
The narrator is one of the best in the field. I'm downloading more of this author's novels.

A Surprise read!
Even though the synopsis of the book's plot had me thinking it would be predictable if you are a constant reader of "whodunits" and thrillers, the offer of 3 for 2 credits had me hooked to picking a third book. This was the 3rd choice and it turned out to be the best read of the 3. Even though it was a little predictable, it was well performed and had some exciting twists that keeps you involved in the plot and the characters. Overall, it was very entertaining and that's just what I became a recorded book reader for...entertainment and the ability to do every day menial tasks while keeping my mind busy and entertained! This book will do that for you!

Narrator-- a one man ensemble cast!!!
This is my first listen to the authors work. It is a riveting tale, without question. The narrator Dick Hill, is, quite clearly, a one man ensemble who acts, not reads, the parts of the characters. I have listened to him before in multiple genre's and I now search for him and assume the authors will be worthy. You will not be disappointed with this book.

A Very Good Story; Excellent Narrator!
This is my first read by Greg Iles and I loved it! The story hooked me from the first paragraph and I couldn't put it down. The story was so intense that there was not a good place to pause or stop listening. I needed to know what was going to happen next. The plot is old but presented in a new and refreshing way. There were edge of seat and nail biting moments from beginning until the very end. Each twist and turn of the story were not telegraphed, so you were always guessing and scared for the mom and dad, and the little girl. I was not disappointed with the ending. In fact the ending was spectacular. It showed the extremes a parent will go to in order to save their child.
I like thrillers that are lean of characters so it is not complicated by having to keep too many characters sorted out. The story moves forward at all times and the roles of the minor characters helped to facilitate the movement of the story. The main character and villain is Joe. He is evil but his cold-blooded evilness is counter-balanced somewhat by big "kinda slow" Huey. The little girl and Huey were my favorite characters. But in the end, the father became the hero. I like that the Greg Iles wrote the little girl as smart, sensible and clever. She was able to help herself in some ways.
For me, Dick Hill is the voice of Lee Child's character Jack Reacher. Nevertheless in this story, Dick's voice became an ensemble of different voices. I did realize until after I had finished the story that Dick Hill was the narrator. Dick Hill took his talent of narrating and the performance of this novel to a higher level. A very talented narrator. Highly Recommend

This was my first Dick Hill performance and he did nothing to discourage me from listening again.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
As a husband and father this book definitely has its moments that make you think about being in Dr. Jennings shoes and just how you would react in the same circumstances.

Evil protagonist makes this story
Give me a really bad guy who will likely get his comeuppance and I think you have the basics for a good thriller. Greg Iles gives us one of these evil creeps in the person of Joe Hickey. I'm not sure John Sandford or Jeffrey Deaver, two authors who forge mighty nasty characters, have ever given us anyone who can compare with Joe. Iles balances out Joe's evilness with the gentle giant, Huey. You're never sure what final road Huey will take but, deep down, you hope it will be the right one. All the other characters exist simply to keep the story moving. And move it does during a 24-hour period that should keep iPods operating from start to finish well within that time frame. An excellent thriller with good narration by Dick Hill who, believe it or not, never once said, "Reacher said nothing." Well worth a credit.

Good story
I enjoyed my first Greg Iles book. Engrossing story. The narrator was excellent. I have since listened to most of Greg Iles books, liking many of them, but this one remains one of my favorites. It is one of the few I have listened to twice. Both the writer and the reader create a thread of tension that kept my attention into the night.

My heart was pounding
After only a few moments I realized that I had seen the movie. I went to Amazon and sure enough there it was. I thought I know how this is going to turn out, do I really want to waste my time? I continued to listen and became intrigued by the writing style and Mr. Iles development of the characters. Yes, I had seen the movie but it didn't matter. The tension, drama and anger toward the antagonist was still there and no matter how many times you read this book or see the movie it will remain just because of the supreme talent of the author.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book even more so than the movie. The actors were good but they could not bring the terror and drama to life that the characters in the book did.
I strongly recommend this book.
Dick Hill ventured out of his comfort zone. I forgot at times that he was reading. He brought personality to the characters and he dropped much of the boring cadence that he uses in so much of his work. He was outstanding in his performance.
