While writers might disagree over showing versus telling or plotting versus pantsing, none would argue this: If you want to write strong fiction, you must make your readers feel. The reader's experience must be an emotional journey of its own, one as involving as your characters' struggles, discoveries, and triumphs are for you. That's where The Emotional Craft of Fiction comes in. Veteran literary agent and expert fiction instructor Donald Maass shows you how to use story to provoke a visceral and emotional experience in readers.

What makes a romance novel a romance? Writing a well-structured romance isn't the same as writing any other genre - something the popular novel and screenwriting guides don't address. The romance arc is made up of its own story beats. Told in conversational (and often irreverent) prose, Romancing the Beat is like sitting down to coffee with romance editor and author Gwen Hayes while she explains story structure - the way she does with her clients, some of whom are regular inhabitants of the best-seller lists.

Very helpful for an author who has just started out.
I felt the concepts were easy to follow and made applying them doable. I am always hesitant when listening to a self help book because really I feel it is the authors point of view and everyone processes information differently. This book exceeded my expectations because it has made me feel empowered to move to the next step. And stop being a "seater". I am ready to have a plan and go forward. I would recommend this book for any and all because there is very useful information that can help you improve not just in writing but everywhere.

I doubled my writing output after listening to just the first 15 minutes of this book. It's packed full of useful information that I would have never thought about my own. Chris also has a companion iPhone app and spreadsheet to go along with the exercises. I don't have an iPhone but I just use the spreadsheet. To top it all off, he has a YouTube channel that I just started watching and it also has a ton of cool videos to teach you how to make your stories better.

Listened running
Many of the suggestions in this book I've found in other books and workshops. That said, it's a short listen and I'm glad I brought it. Whenever I get stuck writing is good to get a reminder of systems that work and how to build up (and maintain them). The only thing I was hoping for that was not there is more direction on editing effectively. I find that it takes me more than the two suggested passes to develop a legible 'alpha reader' draft. Hopefully he'll write a book on that.

Practical Advice with Inspiration & Encouragment
Any additional comments?
I had read this book when it first came out, but when I saw the audio version, I snapped it up. I'm glad I did. I think I got something different from listening to it, and it was a nice reminder of all that I'd read before.
This book is filled with practical advice as well as encouragement. I also find it to be inspirational, but not in a woo woo way. It's more that I can now see the steps I can take to improve my writing in many different ways and that is both inspiring and encouraging.
I think the audiobook is well worth a listen. If you haven't already read the book, it comes with exercises at the end of every chapter, though these are also listed at the end of the book as well. The narrator reads these out, but this audiobook does not appear to come with a PDF list of the exercises. Even so, they are simple enough, so I don't think that would be a serious problem if you don't already have the Kindle version or the paperback.

meh
This was a good way for me to procrastinate for a couple of hours without doing what I should be doing....writing. However, as a well established self help junkie the concepts in this book were not new to me but is served as a summary of something all writers need reminding of...write lots and write consistently..... I confess that I was also slightly put off by the author's lack of commercial success as well as the very bold way he plugs his own products. The most intriguing chapter for me was the final one in which he revealed his own life experience and also that he writes on the side of his day job.....like most of us who dream of commericial success.....I could at least relate to that but was disapointed that he didn't say how successfully his books have sold....but then he does not see writing as a full time career. tbh I was actually outraged and ready to end the book when he revealed that his actual true passion in life was designing apps....I love designing apple apps he says...... its great he has a passion in life and best of luck with that....but if you're going to teach me something about writing...I need to know that you love it the way I love it....that you live and breath it like I do.... writing is my life..also his day schedule sounds exhausting....work work work...always trying to achieve another goal and get to the next level....it made me dizzy just listening to that....in fact he may have inspired a character for me next piece! .......I gave this 3 stars overall because he reminded me of some useful things ...... and I found him interesting as a person .....but it is with love I say this book was not suited to me and my situation and I dont think I will be reading any more from this author ....

Great book, I didn't think it was possible but with Chris's help I have increased my word count considerably. I downloaded the app and it is amazing, in that it actually makes me write. I thoroughly recommend this book.
Now Chris needs to write a book on the creative process and setting out the storyline, using the same type of approach - that would be brilliant.
Also, help with editing in the same style as the 5000 word book. Money well spent
