It is enough to break any man: watching what could have been my future slip away before it was ever in my grasp. The possibility of losing someone I loved before she was even mine is something I never would have imagined. Certainly nothing I'd ever wish on anyone. I go to her every day and wait. Wait for the impossible, for a sign, for her to look at me...hoping that sinners are granted miracles, too.

Hockey star Max Yearwood was everything I needed at the time - fun, sexy, up for anything, and only around for a few months, since he’d signed with a new team 3,000 miles away. Max proposed we spend the summer helping me forget my ex. It sounded like a good plan. Things couldn’t get too serious when we had an expiration date. Right? Reasons why I should not be drawn to Troy Serrano. Number one: He’s obnoxious. Number two: We were enemies more than a decade ago. Number three: He’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend. I could go on and on, really. When my boss gives me an unwanted assignment, and tells me it involves spending time with the grandson of one of our residents, the grandson turns out to be Troy. Lucky me. Four hours a week of having to deal with his insufferable personality and unsolicited advice - the only consolation is getting to stare at his annoyingly gorgeous face, in between our many arguments.

Intricately woven story....well worth a listen
This is a series (unfortunately for me) I started with this one, the last in the series!! I have to read the others to get up to speed-- because McGuire has me that interested in going back to listen to the others! This book can be read as a stand alone because McGuire gives enough back ground information to keep you abreast of some of the complicated relationships between the characters. She did an absolutely STELLAR job of giving just enough information to keep the current story relevant, but, at the same time, makes you want to go back and read the story lines you have missed!
If you choose this listen, you will find the story synopsis was vague and no where near the intricacies of relationships between the characters. Two of the brothers are FBI and their cover has been blown making the entire family a target for the mob. What transpires as the story unfolds shows the emotional trauma that is family unfold as they realize that despite the hurt and what some of them considered betrayal, their only chance of survival is sticking together and fight for their lives.
Joe Arden always delivers a steady, excellent performance. This is my first listen to Ms. Schanubelt, but she also did a good job.
I recommend using a credit for this story. It is relevant, heart wrenching in some places and the character development is unparalleled! Well done Ms. McGuire!

Don't read this book if you love the series!
I was so disappointed with this book. I have loved this series so much! And to have it end this way. I felt that things were still left unresolved and the family was left in so much turmoil! It was terribly sad and one of the character deaths was so unnecessary to the story and useless. And then to just brush it off with one sentence was unfair. This book left me hanging with the status on all of the Maddox boys and their relationships.
I wish that I had read reviews prior to reading this book as it has left me sad and wishing that I didn't read it.

such an emotionally charged story
oh, wow. I can hardly put into words the emotions that this book pulled from me. I sat with bated breath as i watched this story unfold. All of the pain and drama built in over all the books and the time elapsed between the last one and this. And at the end of it all, i cried deep and long. It was utterly, devastatingly beautiful.
The narrators were perfect, putting all the feelings in each character, in each situation. I am so glad I bought the audio book.

A Bit Overwhelming But Good for the Dedicated
I love how this brought together all the characters from the whole series, but at the same time, after not having read the series in awhile, it was a bit of work to keep everyone straight and try to remember everyone's backstory. This would probably be better if you would read the entire series straight through, because coming back to this book after a gap of time left me feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Still, I love these characters, so it was an enjoyable read, despite my forgetfulness.

The final in this series displays a gripping whirlwind.
The loss, of strength, trust and characters is only part of the journey that this finale portrays with each characters having their on say.
I would have like to see how the family pans out from here.
