"Are you one of us?" a patient once asked Marsha Linehan, the world-renowned psychologist who developed dialectical behavior therapy. "Because if you were, it would give all of us so much hope." Over the years, DBT had saved the lives of countless people fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, but Linehan had never revealed that her pioneering work was inspired by her own desperate struggles as a young woman. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of psychotherapy that works around the assumption that there are simply some behaviors that cannot be controlled through conscious thought alone. In fact, it posits that all behaviors actually occur thanks to a mixture of internal and external stimuli and a lifetime of conditioning in one of an infinite number of ways and offers up numerous different exercises that can be done on your own as a way to replace negative habits with positive ones.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy
This book is different in that it is wonderfully structured so that it feels possible to attempt and then complete. The writing is easy to understand and relate to, and the exercises are practical and real. The book asks the kinds of questions that people suffering from depression can still answer and find some hope when doing so. It is the perfect supplement to my work and I will be suggesting to my clients that they consider this book. The skills are useful and practical and not cluttered with jargon and explanations.
