Story
This is a story about two teens falling in love over a summer that throws everything possible to keep them apart. Max: Chill. Sports. Gay and not a big deal. And a secret: An encounter with an older kid that makes it hard to breathe, one that he doesn't want to think about, ever. Jordan: The opposite of chill. Poetry. His "wives" and the Chandler Mall. Never been kissed and searching for Mr. Right, who probably won't like him anyway. And a secret: A spiraling out of control mother, and the knowledge that he's the only one who can keep the family from falling apart.

I love him. And I’m pretty sure he loves me back...even though he’s straight. When I first met Carter King, I knew he was something special. I imagined us being together, and we are, but only as friends. Best friends! I’m trying to be cool with that, even though I know he has secrets, and there have definitely been mixed signals. I don’t want a crush to ruin what we already have. Then again, if there’s any chance that we can be together, it’s worth the risk, because Carter could be the love of my life. Or he might be the boy who breaks my heart.

Perhaps the ghosts were not necessary?
I really enjoyed this book. I particularly liked the main character, who seemed real. I sympathized with him. I also liked the balance with the love interest. I don't think the use of the "ghosts" was necessary. It felt a little gimmicky, like trying to introduce a different sort of character. They could have been better developed just like any other character so it was easier to appreciate them and their role in propelling the story. The ghosts felt like props as a result. The love interest seemed to quick to believe. So, this book was a good effort, entertaining and different, which could have been better developed.

Interesting Premise, Flawed Execution
I really wanted to like this story. The premise seemed interesting and full of potential. The intro was fairly solid for the genre, and, in the early chapters, the characters are well-crafted, likeable, and even relatable at times.
But the MC takes a bit of a u-turn early on, in terms of his maturity level, and then just becomes discordantly and, at times, frustratingly innocent and naive in a way he wasn’t before, and in a way that is inconsistent with how a character his age would act. The author also seems uncertain of how to leverage his abilities (and the ghost characters it enables) in service of the plot. As other reviewers mention, the boyfriend’s brother set the stage for what could have been an interesting layer of intrigue and mystery that the author quickly dashed. After that, he ends up sort of just being there. It seems he was intended as a plot device to show the MC what his boyfriend is thinking, but since the MC never listens and the two overcome things on their own without him, he ends up being redundant.
There’s also a fair amount of repetition in the writing itself. Every other chapter somebody ruffles the main character’s hair. In nearly every chapter the aunt raises her eyebrows... it felt like this book could use another pass through copy edit.
It would be useful to trim some of the fat from the plot, too. For example, at the end, there’s a bizarre, whirlwind attempt to suddenly develop characters who are mentioned here and there throughout the book (like the MC’s mom), in order to tie up what the author seems to perceive as a lose end. But because it’s practically post-script it comes off as a bit haphazard and trite- everybody finds love and reconciles for unclear motivations and all is well with the world.
Lastly, though it’s a relatively small gripe, let’s just say that it is exceedingly clear that the author didn’t run the more romantic scenes past an actual gay guy.
I don’t mean to say that there’s no draw here- the book is interesting and even clever at moments, but the best I can muster for this one is an average, 3-star rating.

Love Story with some Supernatural Elements
I enjoyed this story. I read other reviews bringing down the supernatural element but I think it kept the story from being boring. I loved how both characters friendship bloomed and loved the supernatural side. My only wish was that the story went more in depth about Nates family mythology but other then that great story.

A inadequate, fluffy romance story
My only praise is that the narrator did a decent job. I can see the writer was trying to tell a good story but it just had no affect on me. They don't properly dive into what it's like having clairvoyance and the realistic impact it would have on everyone, most of the time it's shrugged off and I hardly believed this is what anyone would do with that power. The characters aren't given enough time to be fleshed out, I felt like they all had no personalities or depth. The romance was just full of fluff and played out like a teenager's daydream. I was so ready to hear about teenagers dealing with homosexuality, what I got was a totally unrealistic fantasy were every problem is swept under the rug to make room for the spontaneous romance that just solves everything.

A few niggles story-wise.....
The narration was superb, and done by a guy who must be at least 20 years older than Nate and James, but certainly did them proud...well done Lawrence T. Lewis!! I absolutely loved this one even though it had a few niggly bits for me. The mum being frightened of Nate being able to speak to ghosts, and kicking him out of the house was really weird, especially as either she or her husband must've been aware that there was a strong possibility that one or both of their kids would inherit the 'ghost whisperer' gene. She needed a good kick up the backside, as did the lovely school bully Penny and her little sidekicks....actually, I would recommend poison for them come to think of it, I will not stand for bullying of any kind AND the other weird thing...as Tess mentioned in her review, why did James keep the fact that he was bisexual a secret from Nate when Nate had just bared his own soul and 'come out' to him??
Particularly chuffed for Nate who certainly deserved some happiness in his life after his stupid mother and all the bullying at school. James I liked from the start, and Aunt Susan was a great secondary character. As for 'Nana' and 'David'...your friendly neighbourhood ghosts, well we think they may may fade into the distance now that Nate and James are together. 4.5 stars from me.
