Publisher's Summary

In a world where male children are rare, a man is a valuable commodity - to be sold to the highest bidder....

It isn't easy being the oldest boy in a house run by women - especially for Jerin Whistler. The grand-matriarchs of his clan are descended from soldiers, spies, and thieves. That's partly what's kept their family alive in the wilderness. But it also means Jerin's doomed to marry the girls next door - a fate he's convinced is worse than death. But Jerin gets in even worse trouble when, in the process of a daring rescue, he falls in love with a royal princess who's as high above his station as it's possible to be.

Ren knows that Jerin is too far below her class to be an appropriate match for her and her royal sisters. But then she hears rumors of a long-held Whistler family secret - one that might provide a way for them to finally be together. Unfortunately, she still has four sisters to convince. And that's before Jerin even comes to the capital - where simmering political tensions will threaten not just their love, but all their lives....

So wonderful and fun

Such a fun and well thought out story!!! I love it! The narrator did a fantastic job giving the men the innocents they needed while giving the woman the fire they had! Wondering through and through!

Great Early Wen Spencer

Based in a world where many girls are born for every boy, traditional role models are reversed. Wen shows her ability to create a believable situation using the conversations and feelings of her characters. Definitely a winner

Okay Story - More Romance Than Alternate History

I have been a fan of alternate history for many years and even write it in my spare time online. So, I am always interested in new stories I have not heard of. Now, that said, I only listened to this because I am part of an online group helping to write a shared universe story at an AH site and the world as depicted in the book was introduced. So, I had to learn the story in order to write something related to it.

Without giving the story away, it takes place in an alternate world where it is matriarchal and men are second class citizens being that more women exist then men. Throw in a romance between a royal princess and a lowly man and a subplot involving nefarious elements trying to over the government and that is the story, more or less.

That said I was not impressed by the book which is more of a romance novel than an actual AH story. The author seemed to focus more on this aspect, then telling us much about the world it took place in which is important to me. By picking up bits and pieces here and there I did finally come to figure it all out. The story did have its moments of action, but seemed to drag often, going off into detailed passage which were, well, boring. I understand the author's intention of wanting to depict a society where gender control is versed, which comes across clearly in the story. I was disappointed as to how the male characters were depicted.

As to the reading of the book, it was okay and the reader did a fair job. Though, it was hard to distinguish who was talking at times, when the reader switched between the female and male characters, which was confusing for me. So, overall, it was okay. If you are into AH, I would have to give it a thumbs down. If you are more into romance stories, then yes, the reader would like it.

A different viewpoint.

Excellent story, well thought out and written. The narration could not have been done better.
I have only one issue. The deal is the women have to have been a whole lot larger than the men. Otherwise most of the book would not work.
That being said its Steam Punk genre and the roles are well done!

Very entertaining read.

I read this book years ago when first published. I enjoy being able to relax and let someone else read to me. I did not care for the narrators reading of the book. I think this was my failing since I've read this story so often and imagined the characters voices for myself.

Interesting and entertaining

I absolutely love the Whistlers. Travis Baldree is an amazing narrator. He brought the story to life by giving it emotion and depth. I loved every minute of this book.

a fun read

only problem is sometimes the narrator's volume varies too much for easy listening. otherwise a surprisingly good romance adventure written in a very RGR world, that's quite interesting.

An Old Favorite

I was charmed by this story years ago and was excited to have it in audio form.

Is it essentially a roman novel?

Yes. Yes it is.

However, the world-building and social ramifications of the society's structure is so well done and layered, it would be foolish to skip it just on that account. It's a well-written, well-plotted story with one of the more interesting world's I have had the pleasure to explore.

As an audiobook, the choices made by the narrartor for voice and accent were quite well done. I enjoyed the narration well, even, after a bit forgetting that I was listening to a book I'd read many times. So, well done narrator as well. I think a narrator that makes you forget someone is telling you a story and allows you to be immersed is probably the best job a narrator can do!

Could have been better

I believe this book could have been so much better for the listener. This story does not give the listener the sense to understand why this world is the way that it is, and without that immersion into this world, I believe the listener will lack a sense of connection to the characters.
