Publisher's Summary

Set adrift on the tides of fate by the deaths of her parents and left wanting answers, Laura Callaway now lives with her uncle and his disapproving wife in North Cornwall. There she feels like a castaway, always viewed as an outsider even as she yearns to belong.

While wreckers search for valuables along the windswept Cornwall coast - known for its many shipwrecks but few survivors - Laura searches for clues to the lives lost so she can write letters to next of kin and return keepsakes to rightful owners. When a man is washed ashore after a wreck, Laura acts quickly to protect him from a local smuggler determined to destroy him.

As Laura and a neighbor care for the survivor, they discover he has curious wounds and, although he speaks in careful, educated English, his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Despite the evidence against him, the mysterious man might provide her only chance to discover the truth about her parents' fate. With danger pursuing them from every side, and an unexpected attraction growing between them, will Laura ever find the answers she seeks?

SO EXCELLENT!

I’ve listened to many good audiobooks but don’t usually take time to write reviews, other than giving stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author did a wonderful job of incorporating rich history with faith, suspense, and a sweet romance. And the narrator was absolutely amazing with her accents.

Boring....returned

All I can say is that I’ve read and enjoyed most of Julie Klassen’s novels, but aside from the interesting information re shipwreck & wreckers on the English coast, I found this book very boring. I just couldn’t get into it.
Every once-in-awhile, a favorite author writes a book that just seems “off,” and for this reason I truly appreciate Audible’s return policy!

Another Fascinating Book

I loved this book. Laura’s courage and grace are ingredients for fascinating details and adventures. Alex is noble, mysterious, and quietly charismatic. I was afraid to buy this book after the frustrations of the Ivy Hill series, but will probably read this again in future. Ms. Jasicki’s performance in the audible version was, as always, superb.

Okay to pass the time, and...

Although I was intrigued by the subject matter, I couldn’t get engaged. The characters had potential but it just wasn’t developed enough for my taste. Obviously, Laura and Alexander were going to be together in the end but I didn’t “feel” them getting there. Actually, as I said, I just couldn’t get engaged.
But, having said that, I may try another book by this author because the subject matter she chose for this book did attract me. I bet the research was fun to dig into for her!
Also, the reader did well—once I set the pace of reading at 1.2. Did she also find the book a little flat?
Sorry. Wish I could have been more enthusiastic. Next book?

One of her best yet!

I could not quit listening to this book. I enjoyed it immensely! If not the best it's at least one of the best that she has ever done!

Julie did it again

Julie Klassen has beautiful written another historical novel. I love this Author and her style of writing. Her description of the Cornwall coast made me feel as if I were really there standing on the cliffs with the wind blowing in my hair and walking the beaches looking for treasures. All her characters relationships to one another left me with a great satisfaction. I loved the different locations. An excellent story.

Good story with a little mystery

I enjoyed the story and the bit of mystery, although it is a tiny bit slow. Love this narrator, but the french was a bit annoying since I don't speak the language, and the female nurse at the beginning sounds like a man. Overall, very enjoyable and will listen to more by this author and narrator.

A well-researched, captivating historical novel!

Masterfully written novel, with the main characters displaying depth of character and that beautiful gallantry and respect that existed between the sexes, especially those who knew they had an accountability to their creator for their actions! I love how the author allows the beginning to find resolution in the ending. A young woman feeling discarded and abandoned, finding healing and resolution at the end!
