Story
Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema. The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina's relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....

There's something eerily unsettling about Ottessa Moshfegh's stories, something almost dangerous, while also being delightful and even laugh-out-loud funny. Her characters are all unsteady on their feet in one way or another; they all yearn for connection and betterment, though each in very different ways, but they are often tripped up by their own baser impulses and existential insecurities.

Story
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Editor's Pick
A man-eating journey of self-discovery
"Based on the promotional pitch for this new Audible Original—"Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho"—A Certain Hunger could have been written just for me. But so loud was the collective gasp in the room when the project was announced, it’s clear a lot of us were hungry for the story of a female cannibal on a self-actualizing voyage of homicidal hedonism. Chelsea G. Summers’s debut novel follows food writer Dorothy Daniels—the epicurean lovechild of Elizabeth Báthory and the vampire Lestat, if they were fluent in New York media and wrote Nabokovian prose—on a lascivious romp from the cocktail bars of Manhattan to the truffle-hiding hills of Italy. Somewhere along the way, she’s landed herself in prison; perhaps it has to do with her (literal) taste in men? Provocative and very funny, A Certain Hunger is narrated by veteran performer Hillary Huber—just the right icing for this bloody, decadent cake."

Ugh.
I'm not going to finish listening. I'm no prude, I love all things thriller/mystery/horror/romance and it takes a whole lot to offend me or disgust me. This book did both. And the author's constant use of metaphors and comparisons is so tedious that I often ended up losing my concentration and couldn't even remember what the sentence was talking about in the first place! I love the idea of this as an original story but this just didn't work for me; it felt forced and just...disappointing, I guess, is the best I can say. The reader was actually really good, enjoyed her voice very much.

The perfect brain candy book
A Certain Hunger was the literary equivalent to a car wreck on the side of the highway: you know it's grisly stuff, but you can't pry yourself away from it. Dorothy Daniels is deliciously heinous: like Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov but without the fevered conscience, like Camus's Meursault but with a taste for more victims than a couple of Arabs, like Süskind's Grenouille but leading a life of decadence, instead of seeking the innocence not-yet-lost. At times, you will be repulsed and yet, sympathize with the protagonist.
This book is well-written and well-narrated, made you see, feel, understand, and taste the innermost emotions and thoughts of a psychopath. The very implausibility of it makes it a compelling read and takes one into a world where the sense of taste overrides any moral code. I'd say it must be one of the weirdest books I have ever read, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Hands Down My Favorite Audiobook So Far
This book is perfect. The writing, the story, the narrator all come together for one incredible listening experience. I adored this book so much. I can’t stop talking about it and promoting it to others. I want every smart, sexy, witty woman I know to read it. I don’t kill or eat men but I connected with Dorothy so much and I loved her as a lead character. I will read everything that this writer comes out with and if HBO or Netflix buys it- I’ll watch it!

More please
Very sad to have finished ACH this morning, beautifully read (and I am an Italian speaker, always ready to flinch at a badly pronounced word) in Huber's arch drawl. Dorothy Daniels is a wry, compelling Humbert Humbert (without the pedofilia) of a narrator, impossible to dislike as she regales us with her story of food, murder and cannibalism. The novel succeeds in the gargantuan task of combining in depth knowledge of the history of food and drink, informed critique of the US food chain, social commentary, criminal minds, butchery, etymology, architectural history and spicy erotic writing in a wonderful, fast-paced and light-handed novel, never lapsing into the stentorian or tedious. The writing is poetic, particularly about the joys of food and eating, and the prose is caressing and lush. Loved this, standing ovation from my kitchen in Tuscany where I will be experimenting with fennel and legumes this afternoon (not some of the other recipes though...).

Even better than I expected
I joined Audible specifically for this novel because I will read anything by CGS. I was apprehensive at first as I am not an audiobook listener naturally but I think this is a wonderful book made even more wonderful by the masterful narration. The pace, richness and life (or beautiful Italian!) it brings to Dorothy could not have been created in my head as easily.
I knew this would be a book about men, sex, food and female power. What I did not expect also was a love letter to the messy joy of Italy or the wonderful thread of female friendship that underpins the different stages of Dorothy's life.
It is gory and wordy and delicious and I listened it to it greedily in every spare moment until it was finished because it kept me captivated and made me laugh out loud with an evil cackle more times than I could count.
I could not recommend highly enough to listen to this and I intend to devour it in a different way when it comes out in print.

Utterly delicious
I once wrote on Twitter that I want to be Chelsea G. Summers when I grow up and, to be honest, a tiny, sociopathic part of my id wishes I could grow up into Dorothy Daniels.
The splashy, slashy summary of the book is in no way misleading - if you want gory, sticky, wet thrills, A Certain Hunger certainly has them. But the main course of this delight in the examination of embodied female life - the hunger that comes with being flesh and that flesh being female.
An Audible original, the performance is great, and I'll never be able to cleave Dorothy Daniels from Hillary Huber's voice - but I also hope to get my hands on a physical book and see these words on the page.
Easily one of my favourite books of 2019.

Guilty pleasure
A unique and interesting read overall. The narrator is incredibly and eerily believable and deserves a round of applause. The concept was unique and brilliant, plus again, totally believable. The descriptions are incredible and immersive. The only thing I think could have been improved was the story arc/ending. It kind of just dropped off and I was left wanting more in a disappointing way. But nevermind, it was still a fantastic read.

Deliciously Gory and Lush Language
I was salivating to listen to this from the minute I read the description and hit preorder immediately. After listening to it twice I can safely say it satisfies. Chelsea G Summers' lush writing style will leave you hungry one moment and disgusted the next as she paints vivid scenes of culinary delights and bloody murder. The protagonist is unlikable but also someone you'd secretly love to be. The memior style narration lets her chew on the scenery like over cooked steak (which she would never abide) it the best possible way. If you love a bloody page turner with a healthy amount of purple prose and just gagging for a female serial killer who could go toe to toe with Hannibal Lector, this is for you.
