Story
Recovering on a remote Scottish island, his peace doesn’t last long. He is pulled in to a murder inquiry by the overstretched local police. A newcomer, popular with the islanders, has died in perplexing circumstances. The community's reactions are complicated and fragile. It’s good to be back on the job. And when Simon returns to Lafferton, an arsonist is on the rampage and a woman whose daughter disappeared some years before is haunting the police station seeking closure. She will not let it rest, and Simon is called in to do a cold-case review.

Story
On the tree-lined banks of Surrey’s River Wey, a decaying corpse is dug up by workmen in the middle of an Anglo-Saxon burial site. His modern dental fillings show that this is no Dark Age corpse. DCI Craig Gillard is called in, but the body’s condition makes identification difficult. One man, however, seems to fit the bill: Ozzy Blanchard, a contractor employed by the same water firm doing the digging who disappeared six months ago. But then an X-ray of the corpse throws the investigation into turmoil. The deeper Gillard digs, the more shocking truths he will uncover.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Simon Serrailler finds himself in devastating new territory as a sophisticated drugs' network sets its sights on Lafferton and the surrounding villages.
DCS Simon Serrailler has long regarded drugs ops in Lafferton as a waste of time. Small-time dealers are picked up outside the local secondary school; they don't have any information about those higher up the chain; they're given a fine or a suspended and away they go. And rinse and repeat. But when the body of a 22-year-old drug addict is found in neighbouring Starley, the case pulls Simon into a whole new way of running drugs. The foot soldiers? Vulnerable local kids like Brookie and Olivia, who will give Simon a bitter taste of this new landscape.
It is a harsh winter at home as well as work. Simon's GP sister, Cat, and her husband, Kieron (also Simon's boss), are struggling with medical dramas big and small. A trip to Bevham General on her rounds sets off alarm bells for Dr Cat, and a visit from her son, Sam, as he tries to work out if his midwifery course is right for him coincides with a threat to their beloved family dog. Simon is working hard, but he's restless, wondering what next. There's nothing new going on for him in Lafferton, but sometimes the familiar holds surprises, too....

Did the author reach her word count?
Just as the story was coming to a head, it came to an abrupt end with a toe-curling Mills and Boon flourish.
Susan Hill either reached her word count or got bored of the grubby county lines plot and decided not to tie up the loose ends. Or perhaps they’ll be picked up in the next book, as the author has done before. Yawn.
Whatever the reason, the sudden end was jarring, partly because so much time had been spent on random episodes concerning a sprained knee and an injured dog.
However, for the most part I thoroughly enjoyed the rambling middle class family saga and Stephen Pacey’s brilliant narration.
Plus there was a (somewhat bizarre) shoutout for Mick Herron’s Slough House series, which are possibly my favourite books.

Kept me hooked to the last word
Simon Serraillier’s family and other convincing characters make this series so much more than a simple detective story: this one puts the horrors of drug-dealing and murder into perspective in a fully rounded novel. I have followed Susan Hill’s career as writer and publisher from the first novel (we are contemporaries) and go back to my bookshelves often to re-read her sensitive, intelligent and satisfying work . I hardly dare hope for a Book 12.

Sudden and unsatisfactory ending
When the closing credits started playing I assumed I'd inadvertantly skipped on a few chapters.
I agree entirely with the comment about reaching the word count - excellent narration and a pleasant enough listen but an awful lot of time spent meandering down side roads (which may of course be what some readers enjoy).

Good To Be Back
It’s been ages since there was a new chapter from Simon’s life so I was very excited to pre order this latest instalment when I saw it appear. I was absolutely not disappointed, all the usual family members are followed too, the job, the village, everything. Simply can not wait for another case, and chapter from Simon and now Rachel in the new house. I just hope it’s not too long a wait. Brilliantly narrated and brought to life by Steven Pacey as always.

A shame
I have loved all the books in this series. When I read the reviews saying the book ended too quickly, I thought I would still buy it as all the previous ones have been good.
Unfortunately, the book ended so fast. If you did not fully concentrate for a few minutes, you would have missed the conclusion of the investigation and would have arrived at quite a naff ending.
