Story
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale ( The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

"Marley was dead to begin with...." These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge? Or had he?

Lovely classic Christmas story, interestingly read
What made the experience of listening to A Christmas Carol the most enjoyable?
I love the narrator's interesting reading, for the first minute or two, I was just listening to his voice, and then very quickly I forgot the narrator entirely and simply enjoyed his story! I think that is the mark of an excellent story-teller. I could see all the scenes in my head. I think I'll be listening to this version every Christmas! Thank you so much!
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Christmas Carol?
I must admit, I love the part about Tiny Tim the best, and can't ever hear, "God bless us, every one!" without blinking a few tears. Very dear.
What about Peter Bachelor’s performance did you like?
He seems to be a born story-teller, he makes the story interesting, with slightly different voices for characters, and reads with enough expression to be interesting but not so much as to be distracting.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, it is 2 hrs and 44 minutes, so it is a long story, but perfect if you're in bed with the flu and don't feel like keeping your eyes open long enough watch TV. You can just close your eyes and enjoy the story.

Great book, poor sound quality.
The book itself I've read multiple times and would rate 5 stars, but unfortunately the quality of this audio recording is low. It's not that the narrator does a bad job, he has a voice that suits the story, but it just wasn't captured well. It's so low that you have to turn up the volume near max to hear it just okay, and at that point you'll hear artifacts in the recording and some words will still come across muddled. I would look for a different recording of this same Dickens story.

Try a different narration
The book is short, concise, and more funny than I imagined, having seen films but never read the original. Typical moralistic story of change you ways or else.....
The narration however is not good, sorry to Peter Bachelor. He reads the speaking voices very well, but the rest is monotonously spoken as if reading a bus timetable, thereby losing the meaning of some sentences. I downloaded this version because it was cheap, and I needed to read it for my book group, but if you love the story, I would recommend a different narrator.

A great buy at Christmas
I think everyone must have heard or read some version of “A Christmas Carol”, of this much loved Dickens story, it appears to be faithful to Dickens story and I loved the narration by Peter Batchelor, a deep expressive, and mature British voice.
The price of the download is a bargain if you missed the Tom Baker version when it was on the advent offer. A great purchase at Christmas.

Incredible storytelling spoiled with strange noise
A classic story that I love, nothing can fault it. The narrator's voice is a low bass, so it's sometimes difficult to hear exactly what he's saying, especially if there's ambient noise in the room. But what irks me is the mobile phone "dit diddit dit diddit ditting" on the recording on several occasions. It jerks you out of the suspension of disbelief you need to get fully absorbed in fantasy, and makes you wonder if you're being visited by the Spirit of Nokia 3310s past. Definitely a shame, and having given this recording a chance for two years I'll be looking for another recording.
