Story
It's 1910, and Daniel Pitt is a reluctant lawyer who would prefer to follow in the footsteps of his detective father. When the biographer Russell Graves, who Daniel is helping defend, is sentenced to execution for the murder of his wife, Daniel's Pitt-family investigative instincts kick in, and he sets out to find the real killer. With only 21 days before Graves is to be executed, Daniel learns that Graves is writing a biography of Victor Narraway, the former head of Special Branch and a close friend of the Pitts. And the stories don't shed a positive light. Is it possible someone is framing Graves to keep him from writing the biography-maybe even someone Daniel knows in Special Branch? The only answer, it seems, lies in the dead woman's corpse.

Publisher's Summary
It wouldn’t quite be Christmas without a holiday mystery decorated with all the Victorian trimmings as only New York Times best-selling author Anne Perry can render it. Now the tradition continues as mayhem is once again found under the mistletoe, and intrigue stalks the cobblestone streets and gas-lit parlors of old London Town.
Formerly a river urchin living on the banks of the Thames, nine-year-old Worm has never experienced a family Christmas. But thanks to a job at Hester Monk’s clinic in Portpool Lane, he’s found a makeshift family in kindly volunteer Mrs. Claudine Burroughs and curmudgeonly old bookkeeper Squeaky Robinson.
When Worm witnesses the abduction of a beautiful woman by a pair of ruffians just days before Christmas, he frantically turns to Squeaky for help. A one-time brothel owner, Squeaky knows the perils of interfering in nasty business, but he can’t bear to disappoint Worm - or leave the boy to attempt a rescue on his own. What neither of the would-be saviors expects, however, is that the damsel in distress already has her dilemma well in hand … and is taking steps to bring her captors to justice for crimes far worse than kidnapping. But the rogues, as cunning as they are deadly, are not to be underestimated. The aid of cynical old Squeaky and hopeful young Worm just might make the difference between a merry triumph over evil and a terrible yuletide tragedy.

FIX THIS DESCRIPTION, ITS FOR THE WRONG BOOK!
This is the delightful tale of a nine year old former river urchin, Worm, who is used to living on the Thames River, but now has the good fortune to work in a clinic for the under privileged and have a makeshift family of sorts. After witnessing a beautiful woman being kidnapped, Worm convinces a friend, Squeaky to help him rescue the woman. Squeaky relies on his street smarts (from his days as a brothel owner) to find out what has become of the woman, and he's determined to protect the young, Worm as he uncovers the dark mystery. This is a wonderful story set in old England. I am SO hoping that Audible gets the description corrected, because it would be a shame for listeners to miss this excellent book!

Buyers Beware
This is the second Audible book I have bought that had serious editorial problems that had the book broken up wrong. The last time I submitted a review on it, I was told that they had fixed it and deleted my review as they did not care for it. Told me that I could download it again and write a new review. Now who wants to listen to the same book twice? This book is horrible as it is broken up more than once.

The text is all out of order!
The story was great fun, as Anne Perry's Christmas mysteries always are, and the narration was also just fine - but segments of the story are all out of order so it's hard to follow. The big Christmas dinner - clearly the final "happy ending" section of the book, after all the action is over - appears right in the middle of the chase scene, for example. This is the second time I've found this problem in an Audible book recently - don't know what they problem is but they need to fix it! I don't recommend this book until they do.
