Publisher's Summary

A Closed and Common Orbit: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!

Lovelace was once merely a ship's artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in an new body, following a total system shutdown and reboot, she has to start over in a synthetic body, in a world where her kind are illegal. She's never felt so alone.

But she's not alone, not really. Pepper, one of the engineers who risked life and limb to reinstall Lovelace, is determined to help her adjust to her new world. Because Pepper knows a thing or two about starting over.

Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that, huge as the galaxy may be, it's anything but empty.

Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Enjoyable story but some problems w/ the booktrack

I really enjoyed the story, but ran into some frustrating parts when it came to this audible version. Overall the narrator did a really good job, despite some small mistakes and one grating one. She mispronounced the xe pronouns in this book for some reason, despite pronouncing it correctly throughout the first book. This really, really bothered me for some reason.

I'm not sure how the music and background noises are chosen for these books, and I'm really on the fence about them. Most of the time it's not too noticeable and just adds ambience. Some times, though, it's a little loud and distracting and doesn't quite fit the mood of the moment. The worst was when the characters were in an incredibly, unbelievably quiet public place--a place for a species that doesn't communicate with words--and for some reason there were crowd noises as if they were in a busy marketplace or something. The word quiet was mentioned soo many times in that scene, I truly do not understand how they made that mistake. It really took away from the moment.

Despite those problems, I would still recommend this book. I jreally wish we could adjust the volume of the background track or something, though.

Even better than the first!

I liked this one even better than the first book. The smaller cast of characters let's you get to know everyone a lot better rather than the smaller snippets we got with the first book. Both characters stories are real interesting and in different ways. Also this booktrack edition is FANTASTIC! At first I was all like "Music and sound effects? That sounds freaking annoying!", but the music and effects blend with the narrative almost seamlessly, just like music in a movie. The sound affects are not repetitive or annoying at all and usually just stuff like the sound of crowd of people in the background to lend ambiance. It's NOT gonna be the sound of a hatch opening EVERY freaking time someone opens a hatch ect. I promise.

story and naration was great, he music distracted

while the music enhanced the story in some places it was far more often distracting. It was nicely composed but often tonaly inapripriate.

Great characters!

Becky Chambers continues to demonstrate her story weaving skills with a fresh batch of memorable characters. Looking forward to continuing with this series. Patricia Rodriguez does a great job narrating.
Not a huge fan of the "Booktrack" background audio, though. At times it's quite beneficial to the story, but at other moments it seems forced and awkward.

A beautiful and deeply felt story full of joy, sadness and imagination

In “The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet”, I felt as if the author might’ve still been finding her feet, but I couldn’t get enough of the rich setting she was weaving.

With this story, though, she elevated that setting to its full potential, telling a rich and interwoven narrative that builds up two unique and excellent protagonists and sets them up as mirrors for each other.

The plot - like a few of its key characters - is much more than the sum of its parts, and the ending does not disappoint.

I can’t recommend this enough: it’s one of the best science-fiction books I’ve read in years, and I’m hoping there’s a lot more by this author (and the wonderful narrator) on Audible, because if so, I am about to spend a bunch of credits grabbing them all.

background music is so annoying

Just so good and full of feels

the music was never a distraction and usually it would be for me.

The story itself was amazing and the AI perspective on things was very well executed. The end left me wanting more not because the story was unfinished but because I will miss the characters.

A bit boring for me

I liked the story generally speaking, but you can write the gist in 20 words. I will not continue to the sequels. The reader did not use voice alterations, made listening harder. background music was okay

AI have feelings too

I am going to have to listen to this one again, because I am a bit fuzzy on the plot. However, next time I lose my cell phone or leave my laptop, thanks to this tale I am going to have to worry about how they feel about it.

Identity nurturing!

I just love the wayfarer series! So genuine and true about personhood, gender, society and identity. I’m going to try to get my stubborn little nieces to read them! So great! So emotionally grounding!

Booktrack worth it

The sound works even at 1.75speed, never overpowers performance.
Reading and story both excellent

A fascinating trip to another world

I love this book and the characters. A fascinating world to step into. Contains great allegories to inter-human conflicts and cultural awareness.

The sound cast adds to the atmosphere. Does not overwhelm.

Can definitely recommend.

And on another positive note compared to the first book, the narrator has learnt that they are artificial gravity nets rather than antigravity nets (by the end at least)

Interesting side story

An engaging and well thought out venture into artificial intelligence and cloning.

This story series exist in the same universe as book 1, but hardly overlaps which I found disappointing.

Naration was excellent.

Background audio adds value when in a "busy marketplace" or similar, but in general is distracting. Audio engineer should consider only adding background when it enhances the story, and not try to "find something" to fill track 2 on the audio mixer.

Different than the first, but on par in terms of quality!!!

A smaller cast than the first, and it incorporates a time jump into the story but the same wonderful journey. I loved every second!!
