Story
On the way to hurricane-ravaged Isle of Palms, a barrier island off the South Carolina coast, Tempe receives a call from the Charleston coroner. The storm has tossed ashore a medical waste container. Inside are two decomposed bodies wrapped in plastic and bound with electrical wire. Tempe recognizes many of the details as identical to those of an unsolved case she handled in Quebec 15 years earlier. With a growing sense of foreboding, she travels to Montreal to gather evidence. Meanwhile, health authorities in South Carolina become alarmed as a human flesh-eating contagion spreads.

Story
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Publisher's Summary
Number one New York Times best-selling author Kathy Reichs returns with a new riveting novel featuring her vastly popular character, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who must use all her tradecraft to discover the identity of a faceless corpse, its connection to a decade-old missing child case, and why the dead man had her cell phone number.
It’s sweltering in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Temperance Brennan, still recovering from neurosurgery following an aneurysm, is battling nightmares, migraines, and what she thinks might be hallucinations when she receives a series of mysterious text messages, each containing a new picture of a corpse that is missing its face and hands. Immediately, she’s anxious to know who the dead man is, and why the images were sent to her.
An identified corpse soon turns up, only partly answering her questions.
To win answers to the others, including the man’s identity, she must go rogue, working mostly outside the system. That’s because Tempe’s new boss holds a fierce grudge against her and is determined to keep her out of the case. Tempe bulls forward anyway, even as she begins questioning her instincts. But the clues she discovers are disturbing and confusing. Was the faceless man a spy? A trafficker? A target for assassination by the government? And why was he carrying the name of a child missing for almost a decade?
With help from a number of law enforcement associates including her Montreal beau Andrew Ryan and the always-ready-with-a-smart-quip, ex-homicide investigator Skinny Slidell, and utilizing new cutting-edge forensic methods, Tempe draws closer to the astonishing truth.
But the more she uncovers, the darker and more twisted the picture becomes....

Leave your political leanings out of the story
I used to enjoy Kathy Reichs books but now by integrating her political leanings and calling Republicans ophiocordyceps unilateralis that really takes the cake. She is just another angry liberal because her queen bee didn’t win the election. So long Kathy Reichs. You won’t be getting any more of my deplorable money.

DON'T DO IT!
No NO NOOO! This will be the last Temperance Brennan book I will ever read. How many "coincidences" and "subplots" can a reader handle?! I mean EVERY element of this book was just thrown together and none of them make sense. To top it off, all the difficulties miraculously resolves themselves. Here's an example: Temperance has a new boss that absolutely HATES her guts ...but why was that? Temperance has never done anything to offend her and in real life that kind of true malice is always based on some event. Her boss then gets tangled up with the villains of the story... for reasons that make no sense to anyone over 5 years old. Finally her boss just resigns. " POOF" problem solved. That's pretty much how this whole book goes and it's STUPID! The author explained at the end that she grabed elements from three or four different life events, some cultural elements, a personal difficulty and "mixed thoroughly ". Well I'd say what came out of that " blender" was VERY unappealing and CAN NOT be swallowed.

Tired and Boring
I've read all the Bones novels (or listened) and over that last few books, the plot have seemed thin, an the political rhetoric increased. I hate being preached at and I don't like the broad brush of stereotypes of anything Ms Reichs does not agree with. The name calling and arrogance has gotten old and frankly there are authors out there who are much more fun to listen to. I am exchanging this for something else that can entertain instead of preach.

Boring, tedious, not written in Kathy's voice.
Horribly boring and tedious works. Not sure what happened to Kathy, but this book sucks balls. This is not the same Tempe I've grown to enjoy through the years. This Tempe is petty, vengeful and just your standard Karen. Hopefully Kathy can step away from her problems and write a version of Tempe who isn't the current incarnation.
I read books to escape the political pettiness of the left and right, the crap propaganda each spew. Please Kathy, stop. You're better than this. Or maybe you're not....

Boring, disjointed and hard to finish
I’ve always been a big Temperence Brennan fan so I was happy to see a new addition to the series. What a disappointment! The plot was all over the place and I struggled to stay interested. Brennan repeatedly did stupid things that hardly seemed worthy of her character from past books. If this was the first book I’d read by Kathy Reichs I wouldn’t bother to read another one. Even if you’re a fan you can skip this one and not miss anything. Waste of time.

Disjointed plotting by a favorite author
Kathy Reichs is one of my favorite authors but this disjointed work totally misses the mark. She tries to weave several unrelated plots together. The effort is a dismal, mystifying failure. Only in the last chapter, the author’s notes, does she explain having all these bits and pieces and her decision to cobble them together.
If Reichs wasn’t one of my favorites I would have given up way before the end. If reading a print version, I would have flipped through a few pages, trying to get the point, before reading the ending.
The excellent narration helped me persist in finishing this version.

Not The Usual—Too Much Introspection
I have read every book in this series and this one did not fit. It started slow with the aneurysm scare and then her mother’s chemo’ and romance. Slidel was the only character who was acting like he belonged. Even Ryan was missing most of the time. It just seemed the whole book was disjointed and the fact that she kept second guessing everything that happened and thought maybe it was a dream. That is not the Temperance Brennan of past stories. Hope the next book is back on track. I listened in Audible and even the narrator didn’t seem involved.

not her best
struggled to finish, usually i can't put her books down.
I wish authors wouldn't write novellas in between their full length books in a series. it's frustrating to have references to events we didn't read about. if they want to write short stories, do stand alones. I never purchase, read or listen to anything less than full length and in my audiobooks....the longer the better.

Too political and lecturing
When I want to hear a good story, its to escape from the stress and political nonsense we are drowning in today. This author is obviously very left in her views and takes many shots at differing views than her own. I couldn’t finish it.
