Not Original or Interesting
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This could have been improved if the author did not insist on using every overused cliche available. An unappreciated teen who is saved by a gorgeous and wealthy man, who she inevitably falls in love with thanks to some Stockholm Syndrome. It was trite and the characters had the emotional depth of a shallow puddle.
What could Sarah J. Maas have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Have some original ideas, make her characters relatable, and generally not support the idea that some beautiful man will come and save sad/lonely girls and make them beautiful too.
What about Jennifer Ikeda’s performance did you like?
She honestly did a good job. Not amazing, but she did her best to make the characters interesting which was actually quite a feat.
What character would you cut from A Court of Thorns and Roses?
The main character. She can't listen to basic and reasonable directions because she is too busy being a stupid cliche. She was like some whitewashed version of Katniss Everdeen, but her ability to stand up for herself was almost nonexistent. She had no depth and was just generally not interesting.

This book is CORNY
I can get behind a cheesy fantasy novel; I’ll even read a cheesy romance novel. But this story is closer to a 15 year old’s half-furry fantasy of what True Love should be. Most fantasy (or romance) requires some suspension of disbelief. You will need to check your reality at the door, along with notions of what makes for a healthy two person partnership. Even at my most goth sappy teenage girl years, this book would be too much.

Hard to Finish
Would you try another book from Sarah J. Maas and/or Jennifer Ikeda?
Yes i enjoyed Sarah J. Maas's other work
What was most disappointing about Sarah J. Maas’s story?
I had high expectations when I started this book but was very disappointed. The main character was winy and I felt much of the beginning of the book was redundant and difficult to get through.

Disappointing Plot and Trite Storytelling
I cannot believe so many people love this book. It was a bore. If my phone was not set to automatically start playing audiobooks when the stereo of my car turns on, I doubt I would have ever willingly made it through this book.
The characters were not intriguing whatsoever. The best part of the story happened in the first 20-30 pages, and it was all down hill from there. Hokey villain...hokey world-building.
The narrator's voice made it all worse. Ikeda made her voice flowery and floaty in the wrong moments....and this happened way too often. At times I wanted to bash my head against my car window at the sheer stupidity of the way the main character, Feyre, thinks.
If your are hellbent on reading Maas, please try one of her other series instead. Buy the book to avoid the terrible narration.

I REALLY thought I was going to love this one.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes. I think the second half of the book is redeeming enough to make it worth the listen.
Any additional comments?
The first half of the book was a boring 2 stars. The remaining story was a much better 4-5 stars, so I'll settle with a rating of 3.The writing, as mentioned by most readers, is really good. Except for a few things that irked my Inner Nazi. Like the fact that people breathe words throughout the whole book:
"Please," I breathed.
Or the repeated use of strange expressions:
My insides turned watery.
Or lines that make you want to gag and roll your eyes:
"You look lovely," Tamlin murmured, and something in his soft tone made me want to purr.
And that everybody likes to constantly respond with nonchalant shrugs.
Anyways, on to the story...
The beginning started out great, with a kick-butt Katniss--I mean, Feyre, hunting and providing sustenance for her useless father and sisters. She skewers a wolf for its pelt and then a fae beast-man comes to take her to the world of the faeries as payment for it. And then the story goes downhill. Except it rolls down a rather flat hill, and it doesn't pick up until past the midway point.
I don't know if this is intentional or not, but the romance between Tamlin and Feyre takes center stage, leaving the dark, interesting and mysterious fae world doom and gloom curse as a meager subplot. I wouldn't have minded the romance as the main plot if it hadn't been so stale. There was zero chemistry between Tamlin and Feyre. Zilch. Nada. And I think that is partly due to Tamlin's blahness. He is a handsomely-masked dude with the hair and build of a model. And he's a beast. A vapid beast, who is oh-so-kind-and-courteous; nothing but a gracious host to our feisty heroine who hates his guts for a few pages. It was really hard to swoon over Tamlin when all he made me think about was Aslan the lion from Narnia.
I was totally robbed of an awesome, bitter Beast who could have warmed up to conflicting feelings of love. But nah. All we get is a Mr. Niceguy who has a temper that only applies to the villains of the story. So yeah, the whole romance thing with these two was a drag to get through. I also didn't like the subtle signs of insta-love from Tamlin, who grits his teeth when he asks Feyre if she is in love with anyone (on her first day at his manor).
Once we get past the lovey-dovey, falling in love phase, things finally start to get interesting. We finally find out what is really going on and the truth of the curse, and things get serious for Feyre as she takes matters into her own hands to save Tamlin and his world of butterflies. This 40 or 30% of the story was SO GOOD! I was hooked all the way to the end. Another great thing about this latter half of the story: We are introduced to Rhysand. Holy Mother of The Cauldron. Now THAT is a character I can swoon over. Here's to hoping Feyre dumps Tamlin's boring tush for this saucy chap in book 2.

My fav novel to read but not to hear
I read this book when it came out as I am a huge Sarah j Maas fan so I wanted to listen to it for it to come alive and I have to admit the woman's voice was rather dull but as the story it self it is one of my favourites with a kind of beauty and the beast twist.

Epic Beauty and the Beast retelling
I loved the story, especially as I knew it was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I thought the descriptions of the two worlds were really detailed and the characters were well constructed and layered. I wasn't as keen on the narrator for this book, sometimes she spoke too slowly for me, which made it difficult to get into at first, but once you're wrapped up in the story you don't notice as much. I liked Feyre, she isn't always a likeable character but her flaws made her more interesting and relatable to me. If you like Throne of Glass give this a try. I wonder whether I would have loved it more if I'd read the book and not listened to it.

Unexpectedly brilliant!
I wasn't too sure about this title at first as its a little out of my comfort zone and I'd never heard of the author. However I was blown away by the story and the narration was first class. Would definitely recommend

Okay start, but ultimately disappointing.
This book started out quite well and seemed promising, however it very quickly went down hill. The story is just so long winded and rambling, and the main character became increasingly annoying. I kept listening, kept hoping the story would pick up again but after listening to 11 hours of I finally gave up.

Great listen! Thoroughly enjoyed this book
SJM has a gift for bringing the fae to life to depict a different dimension and the strife between the fair folk and humans. She creates a world where I am transported from reality as with the throne of glass I loved farer I loved tam and I loved lucian. A kinder lovelier heroin than throne of glass I hope there are more books in this series

Bloody awful
Would you try another book written by Sarah J. Maas or narrated by Jennifer Ikeda?
I have read her books before but this is a soppy romance, rather than a science fantasy novel. So perhaps
Has A Court of Thorns and Roses put you off other books in this genre?
Yes.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The story was ever so slowwwwwwwly drawn out and the narration matched but that is not the fault of the narrator.
What character would you cut from A Court of Thorns and Roses?
Most of them
Any additional comments?
Don't waste your money

Snoozeville...
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I absolutely adore Sarah J. Maas's other books - and this one might be great as well, but...
The narrator has a voice which sends me to sleep, and I just can't get through the story. It is slow, low and monotonous - she makes the Speaking Clock sound animated.
I'm going to ask for my money back, as there is no way I'll ever make it through the story with this snooze-worthy narrator. If you suffer from insomnia, though, then this is the recording for you...

Ok for a young teenager.
The accent of the narrator jarred terribly with the overall feel. Very immature feeling book.

A Dark Version of Beauty and the Beast
I'm a big fan of Sarah J. Maas, I have purchased all of her available audiobooks. This story I felt had a lot of similarities to Beauty and the Beast. However this was a great version that incorporated some great characters as well as some tender and suspenseful scenes throughout. If you liked any of Sarah J. Maas' other books, you will find this a treat.
The narrator Jennifer Ikeda was easy to listen to and was a great representative for this book.

Good story, sadly TERRIBLE narration
I quite enjoyed the story. I didn't find it nearly as good or enthralling as her 'throne of glass novels' the teenage anxt in this one was a tad irritating at times, yet I still would recommend it. Do not go into this book thinking it is as good as her past works. The narrator ruined this audio book for me. I had to listen to it sped up as she spoke so incredibly slowly and a large percentage of the reading sounded like she was a pre-recorded computer or phone voice. Think Siri but 10x worse.

Decent fantasy story
It was a good story but there were quite a lot of jarring moments and mentions to modern day Earth that took me away from the story and its believability. But I am keen for the next in the series.

Prickly fairytale.
I had this sitting in my library for a while, hesitant to start as didn't think I would like it as much as I did. More on the YA side but still a great story. Even though set in a fae world is not over the top with fantasy. Slow build with great ending. Once I started, binged it every chance I could get to finish it. Can't wait to get the next in the series.
I love Jennifer Ikeda as a narrator but find I have to listen to her a a speed of 1.5.

Ya Fantasy...yes please
Book rant;
A Court of Thorns & Roses – Sarah J Mass
I read …or should I say listened to this book back in 2016 when I was training for my first marathon. Lets say, it filled my runs with something other than a monotone beat (all music eventually sounds the same after a 32k mark).
The first half of this story is long, boring and very slow… but keep reading…it may surprise you…may?!
There's no way around it. I found Feyre to be an annoyingly, blindingly stupid and obstinate main character (a little bit helpless? What is with these weak female lead characters?!) )
I nearly stopped listening to this book a million times...Gripping on with sheer hope that the story would improve. Perserverance & staying power paid off when it turned midway…grabbing my attention to some degree.
The Beauty and the Beast-esque fantasy drama tells the story of Feyre, who finds herself entwined with faeries after unknowingly killing one. When the 19-year-old huntress kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin, one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. Feyre must find a way to stop it or doom Tamlin and his world forever with no friends, no family and no freedom. Slowly…so slowly, Feyre is swept into the fairy realm – amongst all its magic & intrigue, in its danger & hopelessness, and in its wonder & glory.
The faerie realm consists of the seven courts-Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Dawn, Day, and Nigh. Feyre finds herself in the Spring Court which is under a curse for 50 years...is Feyre the one to break it?
All in all, I consider this book good but not brilliant. I have not read many young adult Fantasy novels to compare it too. Somehow light and gripping at the same time, admittingly ACoTaR was a magical reprieve from the boring reality, mixing classical and well-known features with amazing and unexpected parts. I enjoyed it….& I will listen to the sequel, because I am a sucker for finishing things off once they are started.
Happy Reading x

The Narrator is all wrong for this 10/10 story
The narrator is excellent however her voice is to old for this book. It is an excellent story slightly ruined by the narrator. You should have gone with a slightly younger VO artist. It makes it harder to truely imagine the story and become a part of the magic.

Hmmm
Firstly I would like to say in the end I really enjoyed this book but for much of the story it’s quite a depressing and gloomy tail perhaps even more so because of the tone and speed at which the narrator reads. This does abate after awhile and the story becomes one I really enjoyed especially with the twist at the end. I have already bought the next audiobook in this series and hope it’s even better. Another reviewer suggests A Court of Thorns and Roses is a darker adult version of Beauty and the Beast and I would agree, it very much is.
