Publisher's Summary

"The sexy, action-packed first dramatized audiobook adaptation in the #1 New York Times bestselling Court of Thorns and Roses series from Sarah J. Maas. Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a terrifying creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not truly a beast, but one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled her world.

At least, he's not a beast all the time.

As she adapts to her new home, her feelings for the faerie, Tamlin, transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But something is not right in the faerie lands. An ancient, wicked shadow is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it, or doom Tamlin-and his world-forever.

From bestselling author Sarah J. Maas comes a seductive, breathtaking series that blends romance, adventure, and faerie lore into an unforgettable listen.

Amazing story from SJM but performance a bit lackluster

The story itself is amazing. SJM does an incredible job with the story and immersion and I was thrilled to see a full cast performance. The overall performance was ok. Tamlin and Lucien did a wonderful job with their performances; however, it was difficult to distinguish between Feyre’s internal monologue versus her conversations with other characters. It wasn’t anything wrong with the performance, I think the editing was perhaps cut a bit too close. Some of the sound effects to denote “magic” were a bit silly, and I would have preferred to hear the description of voices rather than Feyre’s internal description after, particularly with the Attor, I think editing so you could hear the “pleas of victims” in the voice vs us being told that is what it sounds like after not very much not hearing it. As other reviewers have stated, Rhys’ voice doesn’t really match the description, not that the actor’s performance was bad, it’s just a bit of a mismatch. Lastly, it was sometimes difficult to appreciate the sound effects like grunts or talking behind closed doors because of Feyre’s loud internal monologue over it, but again I think that has more to do with the editing not the performance. Overall, I think the original narration is a better fit for the book as it is and this could have gone from three to five stars easy if some creative liberties were allowed for where to insert internal dialogue. For example, when we are presented with a scene change vs when it is unnecessary such as Feyre saying “he growled” after we just heard said character growl.

Finally, as other reviewers have also said, it is a little frustrating to have the performance in two parts rather than waiting for the entire performance to be released together.

The original is better.

It’s good, but not great. Honestly, the cast of characters doesn’t seem to add anything to the experience. I enjoyed the addition of the music and sound effects, but I would rather listen to the first audiobook that was released.

Good story, cringey narration

So there were things I really liked about the graphic audio version, and things I really disliked.

First, I loved the ambient sound effects. If they are near a stream, you hear water. If they walk up a path, you hear gravel underfoot. The sounds of dishes clinking, doors closing, chairs sliding out, etc, all help to really immerse you in the world and story. I also really enjoyed the casting of Tamlin and Lucien, the voice actors really embodied the characters.

Now, to what I didn't like.
1) The actor who voices Feyre annoys me so much, she reads with such a breathy voice, which might be appropriate for certain scenes, but everything she says sounds whiney and winded. Her S sounds are also very sharp, like a snake hissing.
2) When the characters kiss, they actually make kissing sounds. Its sloppy and loud, like gross ASMR.
3) Randomly during certain scenes, music will start playing to set the mood I guess. Not only is the music too loud and over powers the dialogue, but often it's just weird and doesn't fit, pulling me out of the scene.
4) Rhys is only briefly in part 1, but I didn't particularly enjoy his casting. His voice is higher and younger sounding, which doesn't fit with his dark and ominous reputation, in my opinion.
5) While listening I followed along with a physical copy of the book. Descriptions like "she laughed" are not spoken, but replaced with an actual laughing sound, which I understand. However there are instances where whole sentences are rearranged or left out entirely, which is strange to me. Did they have the permission of SJM to just omit whole lines from this audio?

If you're not picky about these types of things I'm sure you'll enjoy these graphic audio versions. In the future if they are on sale for dirt cheap I might buy the rest, but for now I'll stick to the original audiobooks.

not bad

obviously nothing beats the original and I would recommend reading the original first before this one but it was nice shaving al the voices and sound effects but it's definitely shortened and missing pieces that the original book as but it was fun.

Worth the credit

I have read the original series through twice and I love it, so I was hesitant to spend the credit on another rendition of the same audiobook I already own. But the performances were very good and I enjoyed the ambient sounds that added depth to the performances. the ambient sound was a bit off-putting in the first few minutes since I wasn't used to the extra noise beyond just the reading.
If you are new to the series or already like the series, I consider it worth the credit. I like the voice actors a lot, and I'm excited to see what they do with the rest of the books. The second book is my favorite so I'm excited to listen to that!

Disappointed!

I was excited to hear this dramatized version of this story. The narrators are terrific, sound effects are a bits distracting. Biggest issue is this only includes the first 5 chapters. This doesn’t even include the entrance of Rhys into the story. What a waste of a coveted audible credit. Skip it until the full story is released.

Love it!

I loved hearing the voice actors bringing the story to life. They are exactly how I would imagine the characters. The only complaint I had was whenever there is winnowing/any sort of magic the sounds were very cheesy sounding but other than that wonderful performance and story

Background music

I enjoyed the performances. Some of the music was loud and distracting. Too be honest, I don’t think the books need the music.

I prefer the original audiobook

speed of voice actor or editing of narration is too quick and makes it hard to follow along. I did enjoy all of the actors performances. Sometimes is was hard to differentiate between Tamlin and Lucian, but I think that might have been due to editing. I hope they slow down the pacing for the next installment.

Too fast tempo

While the story is good and interesting I unfortunately struggle with the fast paced tempo of the narration. To me, it feels like I don't have time to comprehend and understand what is being read to me and I feel like I have missed a lot of details from the story.
If the narration was slower and there were allowed pauses here and there, especially when changing scenes, I would have given it five stars

what a load of rubbish

the fact I used one credit for only part of this makes this even worse. such a boring story

dont waste your credit on it. or if you do... go for the second part you really won't miss anything of substance.

"There you are. I've been looking for you"

I can't describe how much joy was bubbling in my heart throughout this entire performance. Even though Tampon is there, Lucien and Feyre's banter more than makes up for it. Lucien is even more brilliant than I thought he was before. Almost every single line was delivered with such tone that you could taste the snark.

Feyre's actor is really good too. I struggled a little with her switching between narration and dialogue, but that's something I always struggle with in audiobooks. She really toes the line between gentle and meek, and "don't mess with me." Her performance has made me extremely eager to see what they do with Nesta further down the line.

The music was perfect all the way through and some of the sound effects gave me an ASMR response which only adds to cosy feeling that these books give me. The background cast were spot on and my heartstrings were tugged on many times.

I'm so grateful that this was produced and sent out into the world. I can't wait to listen to the others

This is just remarkably bad

Honestly I have seen ACOTAR all over booktok for so long I thought I’d give it a go. I’ve never hated a story more. The main character is insufferable. She has no redeeming qualities and is constantly complaining and berating everyone. The dialogue is so childish like out of a pantomime. And the acting is so cringe on top of it all. Do not waste your time. If you want a good fairy story go for Holly Black

The actors kill this stone dead. Cringe!

I had bought the original audiobook, and really enjoyed it, so I wanted to give this one a try because the idea of a ‘movie in my mind’ sounded super fun! But OH LORD. Huge mistake. This is the most toe-curlingly awkward thing I’ve ever heard. The voice acting is so bad, it’s distracts you from even listening to the story! The actor playing Feyre/narrating sounds like she’s doing voice over for a weird breathy soft porn film- absolutely bizarre. I don’t understand how someone can sound like they’re trying to be ‘dramatic’ and at the same time be so devoid of any real emotion at all. It’s almost robotic. Cadence, rhythm, natural-ness, interest… all totally lacking. All the other actors are totally overdoing it and it’s sooo awkward. After two hours, I just had to give up. Waste of money.

Omg the graphic audio really changes the experience.

Being my first GA, I wasn’t sure what to expect compared to the standard audiobooks I enjoy, but I was blown away by it. The detail into every part of the story, either it being the snow under foot or someone calling from a distance. It really helped to play the story clearing in my mind. I can’t wait to read the next one.

A great way to relive the story!

This is a great way to relive the book (in anticipation of the tv series!). I think the characters voices matched perfectly and can’t wait for the next instalments- hopefully they don’t take too long!
