Publisher's Summary

"With impeccable inflections and tones, El-Attar's narration embodies the quirky investigator and those who surround her. She personifies both the place and the people, making them come alive. Listeners will imagine they're traversing Cairo through the deep, dark night. This is a perfect listen for those who are short on time but want a thrilling audiobook." (AudioFile Magazine)

Egypt, 1912. In an alternate Cairo infused with the otherworldly, the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities investigate disturbances between the mortal and the (possibly) divine. What starts off as an odd suicide case for Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi leads her through the city’s underbelly as she encounters rampaging ghouls, saucy assassins, clockwork angels, and plot that could unravel time itself, in P. Djèlí Clark's Tor.Com Original, A Dead Djinn in Cairo.

"Suehyla El-Attar’s narration has the vocal quality of slightly roughened silk, a gorgeously textured pleasure for the ear." (Locus)

Imaginative, captivating, amazing!!!

Early 20th century Cairo, but with magic! Such a wonderful collage of different cultural influences combined with magic that came alive and needs to be integrated into legislation, bureaucracy and daily life of everyone in Cairo. This creates colorful and literally magical background as the main character is trying to solve a mysterious crime. I love this world so much!!! The novella The Haunting of Tram Car 015 also takes place there and is amazing as well! P. Djèlí Clark please please write more in this world!!

Not my cup of tea but well done

If you like this sort of thing I do recommend this short novella. Vivid characters, satisfyingly different plot. Who murdered the Djinn or was it maybe suicide? And why?

So excited to see this on audio.

P. Djèlí Clark is a masterful storyteller. He immediately transports you into an incredible world populated by Djinn and Angels and automatons at the turn of the 20th century. His elegant, lyrical writing makes it a pleasure to experience the extraordinary imagery and mind-blowing concepts in his adventure.

I read A Dead Djinn in Cairo a while ago and loved it. Couldn't purchase it fast enough when I saw it released on audio. Suehyla El-Attar's excellent narration adds the perfect icing to this already delicious cake.

Good story. Need better narrator

The narrator couldn’t maintain her accents. Some R’s were rolled and then others weren’t, for the same character. But a fun story!

Unlike anything else

I only wish it were longer! A fascinating tale with a protagonist I'd follow on many more adventures.

great story telling

straight into the world, but no problems getting into what is happening. I enjoyed this dip into a world of Djinns and others having been brought into the world. the history was beautifully integrated into the story.

Steampunk Arabian Mystery

This was a throughly enjoyable read. I loved the setting of an alternate steampunky Cairo inhabited with Djinn and Angels. The story is well paced, anchored by the enthralling Fatma who is a wonderful protagonist. I hope P Djèlí Clark revisits this world.

Impeccable

I loved every second of this story. The world building, the mystery, the hunt for clues. The detailed bits about Djin, ghouls, and Angels.
Fatma's wit is so good, as are her suits. And before we knew it, the end of the world was nearing and she and Siti had their work cut out for them.

Suheyla's narration brought the story to live so well.

Loved the narrator!

Suehyla El-Attar, the narrator really brings the story alive. Immersing the reader through both her tone, cadence and voices for each character. Highly recommended, though it's a shame she did not narrate the second book.

A dead djinn in Cairo

Wonderfully written, excellently narrated, a brilliant adventure in 1912 steampunk Cairo over one action filled night. The protagonist and support characters are fleshed out, the magic is subtle and the plot unfolds at a steady pace. Well worth a listen to. Five stars.
