Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

In the start of an all-new series, the best-selling author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver introduces you to a dangerous school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death - until one girl begins to rewrite its rules.

Enter a school of magic unlike any you have ever encountered.

There are no teachers, no holidays, friendships are purely strategic and the odds of survival are never equal.

Once you’re inside, there are only two ways out: you graduate or you die.

El Higgins is uniquely prepared for the school’s many dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out untold millions - never mind easily destroy the countless monsters that prowl the school.

Except, she might accidentally kill all the other students, too. So El is trying her hardest not to use it...that is, unless she has no other choice.

Wry, witty, endlessly inventive and mordantly funny - yet with a true depth and fierce justice at its heart - this enchanting novel reminds us that there are far more important things than mere survival.

Excellent

A Deadly Education is a tense, fiercely unique narrative with characters you care about rapidly in a very grim setting. I look forward to everything Naomi has in store in this universe for the audience.

The narrator did a great job too, very emotive performance.

If I were forced to give a critique it would be that I personally prefer more descriptions of the surroundings than was provided, but I'm fairly certain that was deliberate to make the reader feel more closed in as it is not a static trait in her other books.

One of my favorite authors, but...

Naomi Novik is a great author. Uprooted is one of my favorite all time books...but this was disappointing.

It is an example of a great idea that probably should have stayed an idea. I was looking at some of the 5 Star reviews to try and find something good to say....but I don't think we read the same book.

fantastic book about a school for magic

This is a really good book. The main character is complicated and interesting. the world that she created is extremely thought out and well explained.
This would be a perfect book if it was not part of a trilogy that does not end

good harry potter substitute

great world building, our hero is very whiny, and does things in direct conflict with what would be in her own best interest. so yes a good potter substitute. ;)

Unable to Finish

I’ve just started this book, I really enjoy the authors other books but really can’t listen to an angry , jeering , aggressive teen voice for a whole book/ yes I know what age group it’s aimed at. Will be returning in favour of the Kindle edition. I’m sure the story is great the telling of it no.

Well imagined setting

I really enjoyed this book, inspite of the narrator. Not sure if it was an accent or just odd pronounciations but what ever it was, it got a bit annoying overall.. With a different narrator I’d have given this full marks. The setting is well imagined and the main character interesting and relatable, even to a mature adult. I am really looking forward to the next intallment.

Excellent story and narration

The story is a refreshing take on magical education, it has all of the factional intrigues between years, student types and 'house' affiliations, but is a lot less saccharine. The narration is excellent, (I have high-register hearing loss through poor career choices which makes me wary of some female narrators), but Anisha Dadia has such a good tonal range that she conjures a compelling protagonist whilst being perfectly audible. I loved the author/narrator combination of this audiobook and will buy the next instalments without hesitation!

A difficult listen

A potentially great story with lots of good ideas but the stream of conscious type story telling along side the annoying narrator made it a difficult listen. I really didn’t enjoy it. Half developed characters and rushed. Such a shame.

OK, but nowhere near as exciting as others

My least favourite Naomi Novik book unfortunately. The story felt quite dull in comparison to Spinning Silver and Uprooted which I loved.

I didn't expect this from Naomi Novik

I didn't like this at all. It was not the performance as I've read in other reviews. It was the main character, who was utterly annoying, the school itself, that didn't make any sense and the lack of development in the secondary characters.

Interesting story, not the perfect narrator

This is a very refreshing take on the School of Magic-trope! A perfectly wonderful unloveable heroine, and pupils from all around the world gathered in one (rather horrifying) school. Naomi Novik definitely knows how to tell a good story, and this book is no exception!
Unfortunately the reader was not the best. She isn’t BAD as such, but her British accent is not quite right (she sounded so very much like an American taking care to pronounce their Ts and Aah:s, but not thinking about the other sounds). The narrator is a good reader, though, and has a very pleasant voice.
Definitely recommended!

Great story

Previously read this book and loved it, thought it would make a great addition to my audible library. I was really dubious of the narrator, especially from the sample, but you get used the voice. Would have loved a Welsh accent.

Narrator doesn't do the story justice

I read this when it first came out and loved it immensely. Bought the audiobook because I wanted to re-read it on holiday before the 2nd one came out. I still love it, but am afraid Anisha Dadia isn't quite good enough to do Novik's brilliant story justice. Her wrong emphases can be a little grating and sometimes it feels as though she's not thinking about what she's saying. Would still recommend anyone who doesn't want to physically read it to try this audiobook, but if you have both options: please read it instead!

let down

DNF'ed
honestly the most whiney main character I've come across. no plot what so ever!
I had high hopes for this book because it has such good reviews across the board, so far it's been 10 hrs of complaining about noone liking her and huge unnecessary info dumps.
please think twice getting it.

very.. very.. detailed

Loved the narrator, I think she's the best part of the audiobook. The story on the other hand, had a lot of potential but the author just over explains every miniscule detail that my eyes start glazing over then I forget which part of the story I'm in. Just when a certain part gets exciting, I get pulled back again by more explanations...

Harry Potter Meets Hunger Games

This is a clever concept for a book, and it is performed well. The only issue I have is that the author spends so much time explaining the world and how it works, there isn’t a lot of time left for plot. I still enjoyed the book. Hopefully the next one will have a meatier plot.

Perfect narrator

Anisha Dadia has a voice that would lead you to believe she is El, a British teenager with an extra helping of sass, and plenty of bile to spare. Given the the novel is written from the POV of El, the main character, and contains a lot of her inner thoughts and monologues, it wouldn't have made sense to have an older, narrator style voice.

The audiobook feels almost like a movie where we are listening to the young girls thoughts. As for the characters, I love how much, justifiable, rage and bitterness comes from El. Don't worry if this scares you, she will absolutely grow throughout the book.

Orion is one dimensional, kind of, but that us a) actually explainable as you discover his circumstances, and b) there are hints that he is struggling and there is more to him than what we see on the surface. To be honest, any side character that pops up is interesting.

That said, the best character of them all is the scholomance itself. Takes the 'High School is Hell' metaphor and runs with it. If I have to sold you already, then listen to this; Literally, the very last line in the book, is the best line in the entire story, imo. Made me buy the sequel, immediately.

Couldn't put it down! So good I read it twice.

I loved this story so much that I couldn't put it down. The storyline is really awesome and the world building is great. The main character is unapologeticly strong, smart & independent through the entire story. I find a lot of stories balk at allowing their female leads to be like this - Women are supposed to be soft, compliant & accommodating. Elle doesn't suffer fools and doesn't soften her edges to mollify the expectations of others. She can be both rude & abrasive at times (to those who deserve it) & I loved it! Naomi Novik writes really good female leads and I love the amount of detail that she puts into the narrative.

Couldn't put it down - and still can't!!

Novik brings to life a deadly, fascinating world, and El is an entrancing character to be experiencing it all through. The complexity, creativity and ingenuity throughout has kept my constant interest, through many re-reads.

Anisha Dadia goes above and beyond as narrator, enhancing El's witty, snarky personality with on point vocal attitude. Every time I read the hard copy of this book, it's Anisha's voice I imagine. ❤❤❤

A must read for lovers of dangerous fantasy, magic and badass protagonists!

A heavy start to a new series

Rating 3.5.
Some parts were so heavy on information felt a little lost & then others particularly near the end were not given enough of a moment. Loved the concept & the layered magic system. El is a great character as the loner who needs to try & make "allies" to survive. I enjoyed her interactions with Orion. But I felt there wasn't enough emotional development for her by the end of the book. I really did enjoy the overall premises but couldn't fully connect, but am excited for book 2 & see what comes next.

Excellent

I’ve read all of Naomi Novik’s novels, but this is a particular favourite. The characters were really interesting and plot was unique. The narration by Anisha Dadia was spot on, and really added to the experience.
