Publisher's Summary

We all have our little secrets.

When the remains of a brutally murdered young woman are left hanging from the Glenfinnan Monument in the Highlands of Scotland, DCI Jack Logan and his Major Investigations team are dispatched to investigate.

At first, the case appears to be fairly open and shut. But, as evidence mounts, Jack uncovers some shocking truths about the victim that risk turning the investigation into a potentially explosive international incident.

With a billionaire baying for his blood, a former FBI agent breathing down his neck, and half the world's press watching his every move, it isn't the murderer that Jack's afraid might be the end of him.

It's the stress.

And don't get him started on the bloody tourists....

A Death Most Monumental is the eighth book from internationally best-selling author JD Kirk and is perfect for fans of Stuart Macbride, Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre, and Val McDermid.

Another good one

I adore this series. Quirky and interesting characters, and another good plot. Though, to be honest, I’d listen to this series for the characters and Angus King’s narration alone. I’d listen to a story about these characters going to a birthday party and I’d listen to Angus King narrate anything - adore him.

The only thing I would object to in this book is did the author need to make the Americans such complete a**holes? I mean I know we can be, but many of us are not so bad!

So very entertaining!

The prose of the author is engaging, and at times just hilarious. The narrator is a master creating each character through his skill of different accents and vocal acrobatics. I will truly go into a deep depression when I finish all of the current Inspector Logan books.

Absolutely LOVED it. The best so far. I have never enjoyed a book so much. Had me in complete stitches at times. Didn't want it to end. Good mystery on top of it .

Hoon

Another good DCI Jack Logan mystery. This one seemed a bit more predictable, but still it had a twist that the author threw into the story. I enjoy this series. Jack and Hoon interact a bit more in part of the story; he has the most creative foul mouthed insults, I kinda look forward to see what he'll say next. I really enjoyed the ending.

A refreshing change in the series

Enjoy this book the plot was good. It had several nice twists and turns and was overall a good listen. I'd like the fact that it wasn't as dark as some of the others and it was refreshing to see you see it focus on more positive things. Look forward to the next book in the series

Another great story

I love when a story makes me laugh out loud or smile and this definitely had that throughout. I really enjoy the DCI Logan series and all the more with Angus King narrating. Highly recommended series and book.

my favorite of the series so far

The story was intercontinental & interesting. The best part was listening to Narrator Angus King with accents outside the limits of the UK... good change-up!

Best series ever!!

The author narrator combo is seriously award worthy! I wish I had a new one to read every day. I’m not one to re-listen much but this series is so well done that I know I will. Bravo to JD and Angus, I absolutely LOVE you both!!

Surpasses all that came before

I do not have the words to express just how much I loved this book, I was in stitches, literally howling with laughter at poor Mouf (Craig) in the gents toilets, and the viaduct train scene was almost as funny, admittedly, I was over tired (from staying up too late listening to this book) so may have just found it more funny that it was really was but if you've ever read any of this series you'll have to admit that DC Tyler Neish is the most adorably clownish character.

The crime itself was cleverly orchestrated, the whole investigation was classic Logan, with possibly a little more foul language than usual, I'm not certain but it doesn't bother me, although I know it bothers some and perhaps those people should avoid this series altogether.

Angus King gave his usual stunning performance, and we all need more Logan and we need it now.

Can JD Kirk and Angus King get any better?

I ask myself this every time I download the next book - and I'm never disappointed! As usual, the seemingly bland opening (and if you know JD Kirk you will already know that you are nervously anticipating what's to come!) expands to draw the reader/listener in to the necessary description of past and present occurrences which from anyone else might be a little boring perhaps - but not JD Kirk. I'm hooked from the first excellently delivered word from Angus King to the last - what a fantastic choice of narrator for these books.
This story is multi-layered in its subplots and enthralling from start to finish. It is highly amusing in places - I don't know if this is intentional or just my weird sense of humour! - (small spoiler) but I wound back the bit about Hoon's suspected suicide note several times and couldn't stop giggling! I made my partner listen to it as well! The language can be a bit ripe for some I guess, but for me it relays the exact character of the people in a non-offensive way.
JD Kirk is the absolute best discovery I have made in years. I would recommend any uninitiated readers/listeners to start at Book 1 - you need to get to know DCI Logan and his team to fully appreciate the later books.

Not JD Kirk at his best

I have really enjoyed this series by J D Kirk, the main character Logan reminds me of several characters I have worked with over the years. This story however fell well short of previous books, lacking a good basic crime and characters. The narration however was excellent as usual.

Plots and laughs

Another cracking good read from this author. Even though the storylines involve crime and death, the well-rounded believable characters frequently provide some laugh-out-loud moments to lighten the mood. A top-notch narrator just adds polish to the performance. Love the Scots accent!
Eagerly awaiting the next Audible production of A Snowball's Chance in Hell (already in Kindle version with 4.5 stars) and there's another book in the pipeline later in 2021.

Cracking good read

All the books in this series by JD Kirk are great. Not many police crime books give you equal amounts of laughs and gore but these do and it works!
The main cast of police officers are all SO likeable (well maybe not Hoon) and the plot keeps you guessing til the end.The narration is perfect.

No more DCI Logan for me.

I was really enjoying this series and couldn't wait to download the next 'episode' in what started off well and just seemed to get better and better. Sadly, this story and its immediate predecessor (The Big Man Upstairs) have taken a turn for the maudlin and sappy. The author is clearly trying to up the humour quotient in these stories but is trying too hard - and it is to the detriment of what was once a gripping series of tartan noir. There was little suspense or mystery and the story didn't really get going until half way through. The character of ex-Detective Superintendent Hoon is particularly annoying in the audio version - having to actually hear this boorish pig bellow his foul-mouthed insults is just too much! Hoon isn't remotely funny and his continued presence in these stories is unbelievable. Many of the other supposedly 'funny' bits are laboured and artificial. And there are far too many of them. I hope the author returns to a more gritty and compelling style, with less sentiment and more suspense in the later books in the series.

Go DCI Jack Logan

Humorously written, I found myself chuckling often throughout the read. This wasn't as gorey as some of J D Kirk's books which refreshing. All the characters have become so familiar to me they feel like friends.

The best yet

I laughed, cried, and was on the edge of my seat with this book. With each book by JD Kirk I find myself more enamoured with the characters and invested in their story.
Angus King manages to encompass each characters individual voice is beyond clever!

How many times can I say brilliant and hilarious in my reviews? I have never laughed so much at the anger, swearing and insulting names to other people, as I heard in this book...how the author comes up with all this is, yes, brilliant! Love the whole lot of the characters! Oh yes, great story too! 😊😈

Ok, but not as good as previous books.

I think this was the weakest plot of the Jack Logan books I have read to date. unfortunately cliche characters with a Kiwi so badly portrayed as to be cringeworthy. he sounded and spoke more like a stereotype Aussie. still a good read but not the usual high standard
