Publisher's Summary

A Wisconsin bookstore owner and cryptozoologist is asked to investigate a series of deaths that just might be proof of a fabled lake monster in this first installment of a new mystery series by USA Today best-selling author Annelise Ryan.

Morgan Carter, owner of the Odds and Ends bookstore in Door County, Wisconsin, has a hobby. When she’s not tending the store, she’s hunting cryptids—creatures whose existence is rumored but never proven to be real. It’s a hobby that cost her parents their lives, but one she’ll never give up on.

So when a number of bodies turn up on the shores of Lake Michigan with injuries that look like bites from a giant unknown animal, Police Chief Jon Flanders turns to Morgan for help. A skeptic at heart, Morgan can’t turn down the opportunity to find proof of an entity whose existence she can’t definitively rule out. She and her beloved rescue dog, Newt, journey to the Death's Door strait to hunt for a homicidal monster in the lake—but if they’re not careful, they just might be its next victims.

An excellent new series!

I have always enjoyed Annalise Ryan but this new series is really her best. Can’t wait for the next one.

What a treat!

The story is a bit slow moving, at first but it picks up quickly. It reminds me of British mysteries. Slow, interesting and a bit twisty turny.
I throughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next in series.
Annalise Ryan is a wonderful story teller. I’ve listened to all her books in audible form and she never disappoints.

I didn't Think I'd Like IT, BUT,

This was a fresh new find. I didn't think I'd like it, but it was great. The narration was good and the characters were very interesting. I hope this will become a series. I miss Maddie Winston terribly.

This is a well written cozy mystery with well developed characters and an entertaining plot. I look forward to the next book.

Not what I was expecting 😕

The book would be so much better if it was narrated by Jorjeana Marie instead of Susan Bennett who reads in monotone. when I listen to Susan I want to fall asleep. I'm pretty sure this book was well written I just couldn't get myself to finish it.

Weak mystery, interesting characters

The mystery in this book is extremely simple. It took too long for clues to dawn on the main character. The backstory of the characters is interesting. I think most people interested in cryptozoology would also find the mystery weak.

SB is the GOAT!

Although I LOVE Susan Bennett this was not my favorite. The writing was rough making her narration sub par. Story was interesting but took a LONG time to get there. Worth a credit however.

Better than expected

It was a bit of a slow start but once it got going I couldn’t put it down. I have read all of her Maddie Winston series and loved them
So, I’m happy to discover something new

Excellent Book

Being familiar with Door County led me to select this book. So glad I did.

fun

I initially looked it up from a recommendation from another author (Gigi Pandian). It took a minute, but by the end of the sample I was hooked. The rest of the book lived up to it beautifully, highly recommend.
