The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

What story are you trying to tell
I tried, I really did, but it's like the author could not decide on what story to tell. As soon as things started to get a bit interesting he jumped off on a tangent back story. Background was important but there was no flow and I was left wondering who was actually the main character. Could not even finish, had two hours left and gave up.

Stopped two thirds of the way through
It's almost like I've listened to the first three chapters of like 5+ books. The author keeps introducing completely unrelated "main" characters then killing minor characters I liked. I have a feeling they are trying to give back stories to all the demons but they bit off more than they can chew. As soon as I'm interested in a story line they switch to a different one. I had to stop.

Epic and dark - my kind of thing!
I barely took a break when consuming this book! It just grabbed a hold of me and I didn’t want to put it down. It has all these things that hit my buttons: forbidden magic, amnesia, fallen hero, redemption, mysterious brotherhood, grim dark with humor. There’s a cast of interesting characters too. Sometimes it’s just one or two characters in an epic fantasy that keep my interest but with this book, I wanted to have a beer with all of them, even the bad guys. Well, some are absolutely evil but some are grey, walking that line between good and evil.
Silver is excellent! I want to grow up to be her. She’s found badly injured and taken in by a farming family. She’s lost her memories but tragedy brings them back. I really enjoyed her story arc and I want to see what she does in the next book. I get this fallen valkyrie vibe from her but I could be wrong. Somehow, her fate is tied to Livia, a young lady on the cusp of adulthood who experiences some forbidden magic. She’s swept up by one questionable party after another and by the end of the book, her fate looks grim.
The guys are just as interesting. I especially liked Josten Cade because he’s in need of a good deed to give him some redemption. His friend Mullen has faith in him. Perhaps halfway through we get another main character, Kaleb. He’s got some inner turmoil going on as the mysterious brotherhood tells him what to do but his moral compass has serious questions.
The grim dark atmosphere gives us the suspense and tension of the plot. Not everyone makes it out alive. This isn’t your cute & cuddly lark of a quest. I loved it. While the story is a bit light on world-building, this dark atmosphere made up for it. I certainly look forward to book 2. 4.75/5 stars.
The Narration: Derek Perkins was an excellent pick for this story. He’s got a variety of voices, making all the characters distinct. His female character voices sound like ladies. I especially liked his creepy voice for the torturer. The pacing was perfect and there were no tech issues with the recording.
I listened to this book through Audible Plus. My opinions are 100% my own.

The title is the best part
From what I could tell this was an interesting concept. I'm not really sure because the book isn't really sure what story it is trying to tell. It was confusing to follow as it jumped from one story and time period to another. I get that first books need to set up the universe and characters, but this was a pretty bad failure. Thankfully this book was free because I would have retuned it otherwise. I will not be continuing this series.

Excellent and entertaining
This book is a fun and entertaining, I read some bad reviews and don't understand why, the sex scenes are quick and not anywhere near "smutt" as other reviewers comment. Yes, the story goes back and forth with different characters but it's not hard to follow, wrapping everything up neatly together as the story progresses. Yes, there are some "bad" words said on this book, but it doesn't take away from the story, some people swear some don't, and that applies to real life and fantasy. Don't miss out on an excellent writer because of some bad reviews, I've learned to ignore them and I'm glad because I would have missed out on this great writer.

A Feisty, Pacey Mix to Start!
As soon as I saw the title of this book I knew I was going to read it! Who could resist the "War of the Archons", it had to be a remake of a seventies Dr Who episode didn't it? Of course that couldn't be much further from the truth, this is an excellent start to an epic fantasy series which to me had hints of Abercrombie in the characters and Feist in the world-building. As Ford is a new author to me and this is only the first book of the series I won't go any further than that but I'm definitely feeling flutters of excitement about this one that it could become a firm favourite as it unfolds.
Speaking of Abercrombie, one of his favourite narrators, and mine, is the wonderful and sadly under-used Steven Pacey and in a very understated way Derek Perkins who narrates here reminded me of him. He's not quite such a performer but his narration is very easy on the ear and he does give the characters a suitable amount of personality each.
So there is much to get excited about for how this series will develop, if I'm hinting at Abercrombie, Feist and Pacey then I'm admitting very high hopes. It won't suit everyone. While I personally enjoyed the multiple point of view approach interlaced with the mystical back story of the Archons and how they are brought together it does switch about a fair amount.
I'd definitely recommend giving it a try though, there is a good mix of ingredients; good action, decent world-building, a little comedy, grandiose fantasy and a couple of characters I think could, in time, prove to be quite a famous fantasy duo.

Took a while to get into but worth persevering
I nearly returned the book in the first hour of listening as I’d had to restart three times to take in the story. But I’m glad I stuck with it. A combination of three character storylines come together at the end, which I found to be a bit of a let down after the journey of the characters. But there are some really lovely moments and some so sad I nearly cried. I’ll look for more books by the author.

Quite good for a freebie
Kinda slow start, a lot of stories intertwined till it makes sense, but it's worth it. The narrator did a superb job. Comparison with Abercrombie? I don't know, Abercrombie is a master with building characters, which is not the case here. It is gory, too much at the point of describing torturing and killing children. It could go without it, it doesn't do any good for the story value.
Other than that it is a decent plot, interesting twists, as I said - quite good foe a freebie

competent fantasy
decent enough story, covering some well trodden and predictable paths, in the sub-Abercrombie genre. good for a long car journey, and well read by the stalwart Derek Perkins. competent world building, but the writing doesn't lift this tale above the average.

Worth a listen
I did enjoy listening to this book. it's clever in how the plots develop however at times I thought it was dragging on a bit and you do have to keep up as there is a lot going on. The characters could have been more developed but maybe that's for later books.

No clue what that was about
I found this extremely difficult to follow. There were too many characters introduced at once and the story seemed to jump around too much. I couldn't tell you what the story was about.

Couldn't finish
No consistency in the story. Kept jumping all over the place. Do not recommend.

A cruel tapestry of a time passed in fantasy tales.
I didn’t think I would enjoy this book but I found that I couldn’t put it down. It is violent and crude but then so is war and the men who have to fight. There are moments of real tenderness and of cruelty all to be expected with cruel gods/demons. I’m now looking forward to the next in the series.

Too harsh for me, although well written
Started out well but became more and more violent, abusive and full of foul language. Then it moved onto torture. I couldn’t last long enough to find out how the different aspects came together.

Great potential but erratic storyline with excessive number of character
I started to get into this but just as i did it changed to another storyline. was hard to keep the lines seperate as they crossed.
Narrator does a great job and enjoyable to listen to.
Just feel the story editor let this down.
