Publisher's Summary

A Wall Street Journal best seller.

For nearly 30 years a serial killer has been hiding in plain sight. So has the key to an FBI agent’s dark past.

A family is murdered as they sleep. FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera and her new team are tasked with determining whether there is any link between this attack and another triple homicide from four years earlier and more than 2,000 miles away. In the process, they’ll discover a serial killer so cunning that his grisly trail of death spanning nearly three decades has gone undetected. Each crime scene reminds Nina of the ghostly Latin folktale of La Llorona, which terrified her when she was an abandoned and vulnerable child. Now it’s back to haunt her.

Nina has known evil, but these macabre reenactments are as disturbing as they are baffling. Now she must uncover the meaning behind the rituals as the evidence leads her in an unexpected direction - far closer to home than anyone could have imagined. As the team narrows in on a suspect, the present collides with Nina’s past in a twist of fate that forces her to make the ultimate sacrifice.

This one is a GEM!!!!

This book has an exceptionally well thought out plot. There are two stories being told. One is that of a serial killer who strikes once every four years on leap day. The second is actually a spin off of the first. When researching the most resent case, a murder disguised as a murder/suicide of an infant and her father committed by the mother the team discovers more of the same scenario going back almost 30 years. But the first case throws a monkey wrench into the investigation when it’s discovered that the infant in that case had been switched at birth in the hospital. Who is the baby that was murdered and where is the now adult woman who was meant to be killed? And if the killer finds out that he got the wrong baby will he look for the one he meant to kill now?
This is a fast paced book with lots of twists and revelations.
Roxanne Hernandez does a super job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Struggled to finish this book

The book sounds like it was written by a child or for a child. She made the police and FBI look untrained and dumb. The events were all so predictable. The author over explained the most basic terminology.

Story wasn't bad, but the voices of narrators!

Narration ranged from silly (when playing the main detective, she sounded like a 12 year old playing dress-up) to grating (when playing ANY male character). So annoying I had to stop listening and delete book. If you have time, read it on Kindle, synopsis seems interesting, and, I was excited to see this one but could NOT get through at least the audio version. my verdict is: "Skip it!"

Just awful

Felt like I was reading a story written by a 4th grader. I knew the whole plot within 2 chapters. The narration - good for all voices except the main character - Nina G is made to sound like that 4th grader that I believe wrote the story.

Great series…

I have enjoyed both titles in this series. The narration is excellent. The characters feel like old friends. I’m looking forward to the next title.

Narrator wasn’t great

The story is A really good story, but the narrator made it a little bit hard. The characters kind of ran together because of the voices.

The leap year killer

Wow! This story is gripping and gives more insight into the life of FBI agent, Nina Guerera. Nina and team are on the hunt for a serial killer…who only kills on February 29th. The killer has been under the radar for several years, staging the murders of entire families as murder/suicide. Now the team is on his track and this case hits closer to home than ever imagined. Loving this series!

developing

The team is developing and there character dynamic. The author has an habit of attributing characteristics and thoughts to people through visual clues, sounds more like a script at times than a book. I always view this as lazy and is why I have only given 4 stars. Also the lead has a very childish streak that the author uses to excuse her stubborn silly decisions.
Though the book is a work in progress of what could be a good series.
