Somedays Jena Crowe just can't get a break. Work at her diner never ends, her two boys are bundles of energy, and she's pretty sure her oldest is about to shift into something furry or feathery. Added to that, changes seem to be coming to the tiny town of Cambio Springs, big changes that not everyone in the isolated town of shapeshifters is thrilled about. Katherine wasn’t looking for anything extraordinary in her life. She had a job she loved, a husband she adored, and a home in the beautiful seaside town of Moonstone Cove. Okay, yes, she worked too much and had fallen out of touch with all her friends, but that happened to everyone, right? And sure, she was feeling a little creaky in the mornings and couldn’t drink coffee after noon, but that was just life in middle age.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Publisher's Summary
The finale of the best-selling Elemental Mysteries series, A Fall of Water.
"No secret stays hidden forever."
Still grieving from their loss in the far East, Giovanni Vecchio and Beatrice De Novo discover that for them, all roads really do lead to Rome. But nothing is quite as it seems in the Eternal City. Joined by Carwyn and Tenzin, unexpected clashes greet them almost immediately, and rivalries churn beneath the glittering facade of the old Roman court. They quickly realize that allies might be enemies, and ancient rivals could hold the key to a deadly secret.
Giovanni and Beatrice will be forced to call on old alliances, ancient powers, and fierce cunning to survive for the eternity they both desire. Sometimes, finding the end means going back to the beginning. Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water finally meet with devastating results in the conclusion of the Elemental Mysteries.

The Mystery comes to a close
After losing her father and becoming a vampire, this story has a slow start with Beatrice adjusting to her new existence. It does get better though, when Gio gets a summons to go to Rome. All heck breaks loose when Lorenzo makes another appearance and the ultimate evil step mother joins the story. Gio and Beatrice's love story grows stronger and stronger, as all the allies from previous books and some new ones join forces to put an end to mystery of the secret formula, that could kill them all.

Fun series, interesting twists,but...
The main character is bright, well developed, and holds her own throughout. I really enjoyed her intelligence, cleverness, and strength. Premise and characters are the most important things in any series, so I recommend this one to those who enjoy a little history in their paranormal romance adventures. I enjoyed this series very much for what it is, but there are some annoyances with the writing and audio performance though the story is good enough that it managed to pull me in.
My problem with the writing was the author's need for a thesaurus so that, for example, a word like "face" doesn't show up a half dozen times in a single descriptive paragraph (ironic, when your lead character is a librarian, no?)
My biggest issue was the narrator's mispronunciations! These were, at least, consistent so once I got done seething over a newly mangled term I had to go back to listening, because in spite of everything, I really wanted to know what happened next! Steppes are not steppies, signor does not have a hard g, and the name of that wonderful Scotch, Laphroaig, does not sound like L'Afro-Igg. As long as you can grit your teeth and glaze over this type of issue (these 3 terms were the biggest offenders for me)
If you enjoy Patricia Briggs or Ilona Andrews I can say that Elizabeth Hunter deserves a look, we readers can always hope that the editing gets tighter in future works.

More of the same as books 1&2
I’m repeating most of my review for book 2:
Audible’s 3 stars = pretty good, which is my best compromise for rating.
I wasn’t wild about book 1 and I still went ahead and purchased book 2 - I guess I had enough curiosity to find out where Hunter went with this series. Still an interesting premise that had disconnects in it’s execution, but not as many as in book 1. I’ll admit to skipping book 3 altogether and skimming through book 4 before writing this review. These 4 books could have been 2 if edited well. At the very least, whittled down to 3. This might have caught many of the disconnects. Oh well.
If you have lots of patience for stories that ramble, you might like this world of vampires that have affinity for one of the 4 elements: water, earth, air, and fire. And the heroes foiling the evil vampire’s plot to take over the world of the vampires; which, by default, also means humans.
Gio and Bea have found out what the bad guys are trying to do, and have mustered the support of head vampires from around the globe to face them in Rome.
Pearlman did an ok job of narration. I just can’t say if it was Pearlman or Hunter that made it feel so uneven. And I’m not spending the time to figure it out.

Slow Finale
This was the weakest of all the Elemental books. Very slow and seemed like not a lot happened and when it did, it was a bit of an anti-climax. Such a shame as I had really enjoyed all the other instalments and if I hadn’t invested so much in the others, I probably wouldn’t have finished this. The narrator did an excellent job throughout though.
