When a fancy car pulls up outside six-year-old Marie's home in 1959, her dad tells her she is going on holiday. But little does she know she will not see her home again for four long years. Her family cannot afford to keep her at home. Marie tells the story of how she was taken away from a poor but happy and loving home life to live in a convent - away from everyone and everything she holds dear. Her hair is bluntly chopped, her clothes are taken away and her name is changed. Then a horrific ritual of physical, sexual and mental abuse begins.

My Prison without Bars is a courageous and harrowing journey through the catacombs of hell, from the mind and voice of a little girl, living with her own monster underneath her bed. Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller based on true events; chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world. It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart.

Story
Our prisons and mental hospitals are filled with tragic stories like Tuesday Storm's. Her early childhood was riddled with torturous "games" and violent physical attacks. She was isolated from the rest of her family, locked in an attic with nothing but a bare bed and a bucket for a toilet, and fed just enough to be kept alive. The experts say it's next to impossible to find the soul's light in a dark past like Tuesday's.

Story
From the outside, there was no reason to suspect the family life of young schoolchild Keri was anything but unremarkable. Two loving parents, a backdrop of 1960s Britain; life had provided for her, at least with the riches of modesty. Keri herself however, would often confound teachers with her erratic behaviour, which was at best sullen and withdrawn; at worst violently disruptive. When challenged, she would only exacerbate her growing reputation as a fantasist; weaving terrible tales about the "abuse" she was suffering at the hands of her very creators.

Amazingly written
It’s difficult to say I enjoyed this book. The trauma inflicted on the author for so many years was horrifying and sad. It was well written, but hard to read. There are some really graphic descriptions of the abuse that I had to take a break from time to time so I didn’t cry. However I am glad that Maureen and people like her speak out and bring abuse like this to light. I only hope that we could help all children who are in such dire situations.

The triumph of the human spirit. Women are amazing.
Women face so many challenges just from being women in a male-dominated culture that can threaten, undermine, hurt, dismiss, even destroy them. But women like Maureen Wood find their way through and inspire all other women. And hopefully teach men how it can be to be a woman in a violence-prone male world. Excellent memoir. Well-written. Such a brave woman.

So Well Written
So well written. It was so easy to follow along, being able to visualize the story. The voice narrating the story was such a loving and soothing sound. The facts are so disgusting and vial, just a small glimpse was told. However, told with such feelings you felt the hurt of her heart and her body. Finishing the story I now sit here thinking about her and her son Christopher, feeling Victorious for them ❤️.

justice
A courageous lady to bring her abusers to justice. Giving hope to many victims suffering in silence.
The guiltier person in my mind was the Mother in which I use the term loosely.
Her stepdad was a predator making Maureen an easy target.
What confused with the brother they were once so close protecting her yet changed so dramatically I think encouraged largely by the mother I think once he had committed the awful act he too become the monster.

Good but sad
Very good account of her real life abuse, I kept thinking just tell someone but when I thought back to my own childhood abuse (nowhere near as bad as this) I remembered that I didn't tell anybody for years either! Very sad in parts but very honest, well worth a listen if you can cope with the reality.

One of the most heart wrenching abuse stories I’ve read.
The author and victim has suffered the most horrific abuse but holds seems to have held herself so well throughout her life. I could not stop listening, the audio was easy to listen to. I had to know she had justice and the end seems to ease all the pain from a readers point of view.
