Publisher's Summary

Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City's most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom.

Her quest is straightforward: Steal a stone from Islor's sacred garden without anyone discovering her true identity, which would earn her certain death. But the identity she has inexplicably assumed is that of the captured Ybarisan princess - an enemy to Islor after she poisoned their beloved king and queen on the day she was to marry the prince.

Her betrothed, the newly crowned King Zander, detests her with every grain of his handsome being. Zander gives her a choice: life in a cell or an acquittal of all charges in exchange for her help in exposing the growing plot against him.

Romeria sees no other option and embraces the tricky role of smitten queen-to-be until she can escape. As she digs deeper, she discovers monstrous truths that could spell ruin for all.

book is very enjoyable, narration is bland

wish i had read instead of listened - please don’t continue with this robotic, lifeless narrator (she improves while reading other characters’ pitches/accents, but as the main character’s internal monologue she was intolerable)

So Good!

This is not my normal genre and I’ve only ever read maybe one or two books like it. I knew to expect great things right away because I’m a huge fan of KA Tucker’s writing. I was never bored, the descriptions of the world were detailed without being daunting, the characters were interesting and well developed. There is love, action, magic, monsters, and monarchy. Highly recommend even if it’s not your normal genre! I can’t wait for the next book

awful narrator

I was so convinced I would love the story that for the first time I ever I didn't bother to listen to the sample clip. HUGE mistake. the narrator was unbearable. it is so robotic and over exaggerated at the same time it felt like I was a child being read to before nap time. grating and uncomfortable. I literally couldnt make it to chapter 1. Ill just have to read the hard copy I guess. still annoyed that I spent my last credit on this.

I can’t

The narrator is horrible. I can’t get into the story at all because of her voice.

Anxious for the next book.

Love the world building in this story. We follow our young protagonist to a strange new world and learn about the world as she does. Even after half way through we still discovering new things that questions the ways of this world. The characters are also a highlight. I love the way they start off despising the protagonist, but slowly warm up to her, each at a different pace. Can't wait until the next book.

I loved it

I still have 3.5 hours left of this book but figured I would write a quick review. I am really enjoying this book and kinda wish I had found it after the 2nd was already released because I am not looking forward to this one ending and obviously leaving certain things unanswered. The narrator is good with different accents, her normal just reading voice is a little drab but it doesn't bother me....I am sure there will be people who critique that though. The book is great though!

This book was great. Great world building I love the characters. At the narrator was a real challenge. She was almost robotic sounding.

Absolutely mind capturing!

I was very excited to first start this. I had a few doubts due to how many fantasy stories go in the same direction as all the rest. However, I was truly put in my place through reading this. Again and again, I thought to myself, “This is an amazing read.”

I truly enjoyed and would read this book again later on. I’m dying for the second book to this in July 12th. This was my first experience with an audiobook and I was also quite impressed with the quality and the stunning way the narrator was able to capture and keep my attention the whole time. I heard absolutely no stumbling or word fixing. I also am a strong believer of the voice being an attractive part of a person and I thought her voice was pleasant and calming.

Truly would recommend the book and the audiobook to any and all. I’m absurdly dazzled by the complexity and quality of the book.

Thank you for an amazing -read- listen, haha!

Great story, okay narrator

I read this book on my kindle the first time. I enjoyed it so much I decided to try it on audible to prepare for Book 2 being released. Had I not known that I really liked the book already, I would have quit a few chapters in and returned it because of the narrator. She did some great accents but mispronounced so many names and, at times, was a bit flat in delivery. There were points that were painful to keep listening. As I said, I already knew I loved the book and I wanted to prepare for the next one, otherwise it would have been better to just reread on my kindle.

My Thoughts So Far (Chapter 3)

My full review is only going to point out one important issue I have with this book. The narrator sounds like the same voice actor for Barbie in some parts and it jarring.

Hooked

Read and listened. loved the story, I found the narration rigid. Can't wait for the rest of the series.
