Publisher's Summary
Good intentions: they'll bite you every time.
A lifetime ago, brutally efficient fixer Phil Kubiak coldly cleaned up the messes of shady clients from Miami to Las Vegas by any means necessary - short of murder.
Now he's one eye and one working leg short of the man he used to be, scarred beyond recognition, and with the feds and criminal organizations in hot pursuit. Throwing back sour beer in a dingy bar, Phil recounts the long story of his bitter life to the only person left to listen...
Across the splintery table, a journalist in pursuit of a career-making interview has driven into the bowels of the desert, seeking not only an award-winning profile but also something more... something darker.
Will what she sees in Phil's empty gaze spur her toward forgiveness - or vengeance?

twisted
It's not a typical mystery with the guys in the white hats and those in black. it had rich characters and a twisty and twisted plot. I really liked the protagonist/psychopath. this is the 3rd book I've read by William Lashner.

I was entertained
I'm sure Luke Daniels is one of the reasons why I like this book.
The story was OK. You cannot be looking for a classical who done it. Or classical anything for that matter. It wasn't a very plausible book, but if you want to get out of your head for a few hours, this could be the book for you.
It's just a fun story to listen to, brought to life by Luke Daniels

Too Damned Dark For Me
Okay, noir is in the eye of... Well no one, since noir is black and who can see in black? I'm not crazy about stories told in flashbacks. And the characters here are mostly stereotypes. But the totally unreality of the thing left me with dark feelings about it. Sort of noir, y'know? Luke Daniels does his usual good job but it's hard to rise above this plotting. Still I'll probably read more of Lasher. He's a craftsman and maybe with a better narrative line he's great.

sometimes the reader and author are a great match!
Like Daniels turns in a great job, maybe his best yet!
The story has it all , liars, conmen, enforcers, thugs, women of questionable reputation. And cold blooded killers what else could you ask for?
The only thing I didn't like was the predictability of the ending, but what the heck this book gives you a great ride, and the ending is minor.
This could be a movie with Sam Eliott in the staring role.
The bad Guys are relentless in hunting down their victims.lots of blood and guts, shoot outs and great story telling

Unforgettable (for good or ill)
Wow, I don't even know where to start. First off, this is not for the faint of heart; I read a lot of crime/noir/hardboiled books and this book made me gag in a few places. Second off this is an unforgettable book. The main character is a psychopath and recognizes that he is one. He has no empathy and thinks only of himself and how he can manipulate others to further his ambitions. Is he redeemed at the end of the book? That's for you to decide. The narrator is superb (maybe that's why I gagged 😏).

Weird, funny, shocking, unforgettable crime novel!
The protagonist is a likable psychopath and is one of the nicest character in the novel. A Filthy Business is a lawyer turned conman turned wanted criminal. The novel grabs the listeners attention in the opening chapter and lever lets go. Inside the author's brain is a weird place.
Author William Lashner writes legal and crime thrillers that are more than a bit different from the usual fare. I like some and don't like others. In this case he tells a hell of a story which is made even better by the excellent narration of Luke Daniels.

Preposterous.
Not many people seem to have either read or reviewed this book, and there are reasons for that, let me tell you. Mr. Lashner can write, and Mr. Daniels is an even better narrator, but this book stretches the limits of credulity so far that it sacrifices everything. Period. It professes to be the story of a psychopath, but the plot is so utterly foolish, disconnected, rambling, laughable (and not in a good way) that I gave up on it somewhere past the middle. Some of the chapters are so unimaginably bad that you can't actually believe you are listening to such crap. I know what a psychopath is, having evaluated thousands of them in jails and prisons over the past forty years, and Phil Kubiak is not one. This book seems to have sprung from the imagination of a child. I don't wish to insult the readers who liked the book: reasonable people can differ. But personally, I cannot possibly recommend this thing to any Audible reader who wants any kind of quality or believability in his/her fiction. Maybe this is just trash. But it's bad, stinky trash. Don't waste your time or money.

If you bother, get the abridged version
What starts as a thriller, soon becomes long and drawn out to the point that you will skip chapters and never miss them, then becomes a comic rendition of every bad action movie you've ever seen. The characters become predictable, the story looses intensity as it tries to hard to be a great action novel. You finish just to see how many bad Hollywood action scene Lashner will weave into the story. Kind of sad, I had high hopes.
