Publisher's Summary

They lied, they lie, they will lie. This world is built on deception.

Our hero entered the store that fateful evening and became involved in a life-or-death game arranged by a mysterious creature. He survived, but instead of being on Earth, he now appeared to be in a different world, with other people who had passed a similarly deadly test. Some made it through by using force, some by using their cunning.... Everyone has their own story, but they all have one thing in common - there are no good people among them.

The world of Karik turned out to be akin to a game. In it, one can level up, grow stronger, even resurrect in case of failure. But if one makes a mistake of believing the wrong person, they will die for good. Will the magic that he needs to conceal, or maybe his patron, who seems incapable of telling the truth, help him? Who can say?

I have no idea what this is...

I bought this book based on the summary and a couple of reviews. I guess that I was expecting a grim litrpg in a dog-eat-dog fantasy world. All the characters are definitely villains or at least antiheroes but its definitely not what I expected. The plot is really confusing, either by design or because of the translation, and your left with very little backstory on any characters and that includes the MC. There isnt any world building either which is what finally pushed me to abandon the book.

Couldn’t get past the narration

The narration’s cadence was choppy and I didn’t want to listen to it for hours. Couldn’t finish it.

Too convoluted for me

It might be a spoiler review so be warned...

I liked the book summary and the plot sounded interesting. Since I love the fantasy genre and especially litrpg, I figured it was right up my ally. Unfortunately it turned out to be more of a chore to listen to.

except for a couple of cannon fodder they all gain rare/immense powers (and master its usage) easier and faster than I gain weight during the holidays... and that’s saying something. It just got too convoluted, like a criminal version of a daytime soap. I listened to the whole thing because I’m sick and got nothing else to do other than lying in the couch listening via Alexa and too tired to get up and get my phone to find a different book. It still took me nearly a week to finish it since I’d play it when I got tired of Alexa playing music.

Try out this dark post apocalyptic novel

A dark post apocalyptic world. A different pace for me but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

save yourself!

the narrator is awful in this. he gives every character a... 'Russian' accent. that wouldn't normally be an issue but the narrators poor attempt at a stereotypical Russian accent sounds like a harsh Count Dracula from sesame street. I barely made it through chapter 2.

I can't vouch for the quality of the writing because I didn't suffer through enough narration but if the synopsis tweaked your interest then I suggest the eBook over the audio book.

weak all around

Hello, I really dislike leaving bad reviews but this was difficult to listen to and I could not make it to the end. I have completed over 400 titles and have over 12 months of listening time. This is unfortunately a poorly done magic system that feels more like a bad description of a mediocre video game than something original. I struggled to listen to the author's bad impression of a Russian accent and struggled more with his awkward pacing and very weird enunciation. I gave it a good 4 hours of listening before I had to pull the plug. If this is your first LitRPG novel please keep an open mind to the genre and try another novel.

The narration is awful

There is an old SNL skit where people went to the William Shatner and Jack Klugman School of Overacting. This narrator graduated from this school. I couldn’t concentrate on the story because his cadence was that bad. It took away what the author tried to convey. I couldn’t finish it.

Absolutely loved it!

This book is a wonderful twist on the litrpg genre, the main character is amusing and well written. The author paints a wonderful world I want to be transported to! not only is it a good book but the narrator dose a fantastic job breathing life in to it! If your wondering if you should bye this book go no farther stop hesitating and bye if you won’t regret it I promise :)

Strange

STORY: would have been good, except it had quite a few holes where something important happened, with NO explanation as to how / poof it was just there.
CONCEPT: is interesting, but the holes & performance RUNED the book.
PERFORMANCE was HORRID: EVERYONY had the same Russian accent, with almost the same voice & you couldn't even tell men from women.

excellent story

I enjoyed it from beginning to end and now of course need to read them all. The narration is amazing per usual for Tristan Morris and the story is veeply interesting. It starts off with a bang and continues with the pace through the entire story. I'm hooked!

interesting

A highly interesting world built with many intrigues an plots, some I missed but enjoyed, others I felt weren't touched upon more deeply, the Mc's weopon skill could be refined, and some plots I felt were missing and came out of nowhere near the end otherwise, I look forward to the sequel.

A dull copy

I won’t totally trash this rather weak copy of a now overly exposed story line. I appreciate the author is trying to put a twist on to a common theme but it simply doesn’t make it. The readers attempts at speaking in a Russian accent are simply laughable. The performer has a great natural voice so why utterly spoil it with yet another ‘Chekhov’ impersonation. OK as an ‘included’ title I guess some will like it but it will never make the ‘pay’ list.

Good premise, but...

I like the idea of the villains, i like the world-building that the authors did, especially with the gaming stuff. I would have adored it but there was some things that was to understand:

- a lot of characters, jumping from person to another. this was made even more difficult with the audio actor having limited voice--that could not separate the characters. I glazed over the other ones, and couldn't really keep up
- the protagonist [main villain] doesn't really have a centring characteristic about him, he just wants to survive--but you don't know if he wants to rule them all or just be deceiving or a hero. It seemed like he was bordering morality, nothing too extreme--which was kinda the expectation when you see a book with 'villain' in the title
- it was hard to figure who the audience this book was for: ya or adults--it seemed a little murky.

Ridiculous voice characterisation

The story isn't too bad - a slightly different twist on the genre and the writting is solid. However the vocalisation of every character sounds like a bad cliché movie vampire. There is no way to distinguish which character is talking because they all sound like the same bad vampire. The narration between episodes of dialogue is "sing songy" and equally bad. I would have listened to book 2 in the series but I just don't think I can bring myself to try to struggle through a similar performance. i think I will search out the written version to read rather than torture myself with the audiobook.
