Story
Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early 20th century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place", he said, "where learning is a game." Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious".

In Charlie Hall’s world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences—but also to increase power and influence. You can alter someone’s feelings—and memories—but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden—a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms. And sometimes, it has a life of its own.

Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in...well, everything. Her identical twin sister, Amy, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag), and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Can not listen to this!
Listening to this book on Audible, I got 25 minutes in and had to stop it. The narrator's voice is ear piercing and, regardless of how good the story might be, I can not listen to that voice for 8 hours.

Read this book!!!
I picked this at random as I had a credit to spend and thought it looked interesting. What a find! I was completely blown away by this, and resented having to stop listening for meals and sleeping. A bit reminiscent of Special Topics in Calamity Physics, but set in England. Brilliant characterization and plotting, I almost guessed who dun it, but didn’t see the twist at the end. I cannot recommend this too highly. Don’t be put off by the YA classification, this is a seriously good book.

The best story I've listened to this year!
This book came highly recommended to me. I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to the hype, but I can confirm it 100% lives up to the hype and does not disappoint. I didn't see the ending coming from a mile off like some of the books I've listened to this year. I will definitely be reading the other books from this series.

This is unlike any book I have ever read/listened to before! Please do not be put off by the YA tag, this is most definitely for adults too.
I found this story to be enthralling and real, with many twists and turns, shocks, sadness and intrigue. I was hooked from the beginning.. Very well read by the narrators too.

Amazing story!!!!
I absolutely recommend this audiobook to anyone considering it. The twists and turns are unexpected and the motive behind the actions are actually realistic - no character evil just for the sake of being evil. My only critique would be the voice acting behind the best friend and little brother. They’re the same grating high pitched tone which while works for a little brother, kind of makes the best friend sound really young.
