Publisher's Summary

A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient evil - until the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal.

Though forbidden by the alliance council to kill the corrupt king responsible for his parents' murders, Maddek vows to avenge them, even if it costs him the Parsathean crown. But when he learns it was the king's daughter who lured his parents to their deaths, the barbarian warrior is determined to make her pay.

Yet the woman Maddek captures is not what he expected. Though the last in a line of legendary warrior-queens, Yvenne is small and weak, and the sharpest weapons she wields are her mind and her tongue. Even more surprising is the marriage she proposes to unite them in their goals and to claim their thrones - because her desire for vengeance against her father burns even hotter than his own....

Look no further

I loved it! I've been slogging through some mediocre book choices lately but finally found a winner! For starters I love Nicole Poole and as we all know the narrator can make or break an audiobook. Next we have great character development and a fun new world to explore. Bonus points for having a strong heroine who isn't annoying! It's also longer than 4 hours so well worth the credit (side rant: who is using their credit for a 4-6 hour book!? Not me!) And and and it's a marriage of convenience story which is a favorite trope of mine. More please!

Lots of sexy time

I enjoyed this book and it’s weirdness. We have in this book land of the lost, game of thrones meets smut. I did not really enjoy the male main character for about 1/2 the book. But by the end of it he grew on me a little. It was a fun read if you like your fantasy with some serious sexy time. I was a little embarrassed at how often the c words were used to describe genitalia. Also get used the word honey now. The plot was uneven and predictable. Gez- I’ve written little to recommend this book. I enjoyed the sexy time. I enjoyed that the female main character was strong and determined. Also she was curious, competent and wise. I enjoyed the weird creatures. It made me cry. I’m a sucker for a woman alone and misunderstood in the world. She faces that aloneness with acceptance. Because she can be no one but herself and will not accept having to change just to have a man in her life. (I wonder if this review said more about me than the book? )

Had to Slow down to .9!

It was so strange. I started listening and thought it was accidentally sped up, but it was at 1.0. But I could hear that I sounded clipped and rushed.

Once I put it down to .9, it sounded “right.” I listened to this narrator on another book and I really can’t figure out why the entire file is sped up. If it bothers you, just put it at .9 for “regular” speed.

I really don’t know why they would do that.

A New Favorite

Excellent job Milla Vane. I can hardly wait for the next to be available on audible. I am also a fan of Nicole Poole. This story has adventure, loss, victory, and hope. Love and perception is what has to be spread to make the people unified and so the story continues but no cliffhanger.
A dragon in this book is a group of loyal guards and friends that make up each part of the dragon. The gathering of them is powerful. 5 stars!!

great but beware

i loved the story. it brings you into it. very strong women but equally strong men who dont lose their strength by acknowledging the strong women. in fact the men need and actually look for women who have strengths not equal to them but compliment their strengths. But Beware the sex scenes are very explicit. do not listen to this book around anyone you don't want to blush around. but in your ear pieces , enjoy a little porn.

This was an excellent story!!!!!!!!!

I loved the character arc! I loved the steaminess. The only thing that it needed was to be slowed down to 0.9x. It was read way to fast at normal speed. Once I did that, I was completely hooked until the end!

Great story

Truly amazing, epic story.

I’m only sad that the narration was fairly subpar. At one point my husband walked in the room, looked at me funny and asked “You have SIRI reading out loud to you?” We both listen to audiobooks regularly, but he wasn’t kidding. He really thought this book was text to voice. This narrator, at many points, was so robotic, it certainly sounded that way.

The story, itself, however, was wonderful, and I could ignore the poor narration. The narration added nothing, however, and if reading is an option, I think I would recommend the print book over the audio version.

Boring As Hell

If you are really planning on reading this book, then read it, don't listen to the audio book. The narrator had the tone of a robot. Plus the story was so long and boring.

A romance with substance

The weird cover and description depreciate the actual substance of this book. Yes, it’s a romance novel, but the world is richly imagined, the cultures fully embellished, and the characters satisfyingly complex. I’m glad I took a gamble and only rolled my eyes at a few sex scenes. Beyond that, it’s just lavish, enjoyable story telling.
