Story
It's hard to be a hero. There's always something needing October "Toby" Daye's attention, and her own desires tend to fall by the wayside in favor of solving the Kingdom's problems. That includes the desire to marry her long-time suitor and current fiancé, Tybalt, San Francisco's King of Cats. She doesn't mean to keep delaying the wedding; it just sort of...happens. And that's why her closest friends have taken the choice out of her hands, ambushing her with a court wedding at the High Court in Toronto.

The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity - and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected - perhaps infected is a better word - by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

Better than the last, but missing novella
After The Unkindest Tide, I considered breaking up with this series, but I love the world so much that I had to give this one a listen and I'm glad I did. Overall it's one of the most satisfying in the series and I'm curious to see what happens next.
My only big complaint is that the novella is once again not part of the audiobook. Most, if not all, of the books in this series have a novella in the print versions. These novellas have storylines that are pertinent to the series overall, but so far only The Unkindest Tide includes it in the audiobook. I was hoping this was going to happen going forward, but apparently that was a one-time thing. It's frustrating to not get all of the content included in the print versions.

book 14 and this series is still going strong.
Really good. this is the 14th book in the series, and it continues to be intriguing and interesting.
this one included some major plot twists, so I would not recommend picking this one up before reading the series.
but thus continues to be one of my favorite series, and there is no indication of it slowing down.
I cannot wait for the next one.
The only thing I am sad about is that Audible has not included the Novella. I hope they consider doing that at some point . I would even be willing to pay extra for that.

Toby on another adventure
I do love my Toby books, and 3 books ago I went over to the audio side. So yes I am a bit stuck in my own head still, and I am still not sure about Tybalt (kind of how I felt about Curran when I went over to audio there). But Kowal is doing such an excellent job. I am so glad I went over to audio.
Toby and Tybalt are still not married, and he wants it done now! But, faerie law is stupid, and she is told that Simon has to be there. Simon, that complete asshat. So she has to go find him.
Adventure time with friends. Danger a plenty. Faerie being faerie. And blood being spilled.
I do love this series and it is still going strong, though I truly hope that Tybalt and Toby will get married soon, oh and that they will be happy! That poor woman needs a happy ending.
Oh and something happens here that made me go all whaaaat!
Awesome series, what are you waiting for?
And yes the narrator is great, audio is a great way of experiencing this series. Her Toby is the only Toby I can hear now

Good, but somwhat underwhelming.
Both The Unkindest Tide and A Killing Frost have conclusions to plot points that have been in the making sense the very beginning. Which is awesome, however, the conclusions are somewhat anticlimactic. Don't get me wrong I like both books, but considering how long we were waiting for them to happen i was kinda expecting something a bit more epic. I mean it took Toby about two seconds to find a character, most of which was just sitting around waiting for them to walk down some stairs. Not to mention that she wasn't even looking for them in the first place. I don't know... it just kind of feels like that Seanan is done with these books and she is trying to tie up all the loose ends as quickly as possible. I might be wrong, probably am, but it's how i feel right now. We will have to wait until the next book, I guess, to see if i am right or wrong.

A decent story with a rough start.
When going on a quest, with no emergency or immediate threat, she just got dressed and took her knife. No grabbing of gear for the squire that she is swinging by to pick up, no snacks or water, no emergency kit, nada. That made this book hard to get into, and the end seemed too abrupt.

exceptional as always
the narrator has such a soothing voice that I fell asleep for a lot of the book when I first purchased it.
I had to read/listen again with sine parts familiar and others completely new to me.
I have found I especially like Toby's character.
it's rare in most fantasy and fiction to have a mature adult who has adult children and mature problems.
so often the hero/heroine is young.
I realized I have drifted away from a lot of fantasy likely bc it's harder to identify with being young and optimistic when I often feel a connection with neither.
this story hit so many resonating notes with me I had to frequently chuckle. especially in the beginning.
I especially like that the heroes don't have "fairytale endings" (somewhat... I do wish Thibault wasn't a work of fiction... ) but I think so many mature adults can identify with doing a lot for their children at great cost to themselves and the adult children not appreciating or understanding what was done for them and sometimes at great cost.
this story was a good story. but to me it's a great story for resonating with me like very few fiction books can.
I highly recommend this for the cynical mature adults who find fantasy hard to get through.
you might like it far more than you expect.

Amazingly good for book 14
I think this is my least favorite of the October series so far, and it’s still pretty darn good. This is the most books I’ve ever read in a series and I can’t say that I’m not looking forward to reading book 15. If you liked the previous 13 books, I think you’ll like this one. It’s not materially different.
But that may also be the deep weakness of this book. It’s not materially different from the previous 13 books. It feels a bit like a really good clip episode of a TV show. Everything you love is there but it’s stretched a bit past its intended use. It’s fun but something new needs to happen now.
Said new thing may have been set up. But it’s not actually in this book, maybe next one.
So, all in all, amazingly good for book 14. But it is the 14th book and the age is starting to show just a little.
