Story
Jory Harcourt doesn't have to go looking for trouble. Wherever he goes, it seems to find him - particularly when his partner, Sam Kage, is working undercover on a federal task force. After the recession forces him to close his business, Jory goes to work as a matchmaker and event planner. From there, it's only a matter of time before his big mouth and up-front attitude make him the rope in a tug-of-war between a trust-fund baby and a drug-smuggling criminal.

Deputy US Marshal Miro Jones has a reputation for being calm and collected under fire. These traits serve him well with his hotshot partner, Ian Doyle, the kind of guy who can start a fight in an empty room. In the past three years of their life-and-death job, they've gone from strangers to professional coworkers to devoted teammates and best friends. Miro’s cultivated blind faith in the man who has his back… faith and something more.

You belong to me and I know it down deep, in muscle and bone, where my wolf lives. Avery Rhine isn’t an average homicide detective with the Chicago PD. In fact, Avery isn’t an average anything. Sure, as an omega he knows he’s at the bottom of the food chain, but that’s never slowed him down. He’s got a great life, complete with a loving family and a best friend who’d take a bullet for him, so what more could he possibly want or need? Except, maybe, for the world to change.

It's not you...
There was just something about this series that I just did not like and I could not put my finger on it. I read and reviewed Volume 1 (Books #1-2) giving it a three rating for the story. I just completed Volume 2 (Books #3-4) and somewhere towards the end of book 3 I figured out what it was that I was having a problem with...I do not identify with the dominate/submissive relationship between Sam and Jory. Attempting to identify with the characters allows the reader to fully enjoy the tale that is being told and I just could not. I kept saying, if I was Jory...geez the expletives that spewed forth from my mouth! Now I will say that I did enjoy book four the most. Jory's escapades and his attempt at mystery solving was rather enjoyable (if not a bit far fetched) and the conversations between Dane and Jory were rather comical. I was a bit confused that Mary Calmes did not expound on Jory and Sam's union but rather chose to end the tale with anothers wedding and petty jealousy. I have book 5 left, but I will wait a while before I read it. I need a break from Jory and Sam. I would recommend, if for no other reason than I like Mary Calmes story telling.

3 years Mary!
3 years Mary! 3. Freakin’. Years!
I’ve said it before. 3 years is way too long! Our poor Jory had his heart stomped by Sam and was left adrift for 3 stinkin’ years! During that time both he and Sam end up sleeping with others, including Aaron Sutter- who has his own story coming up- and this is something I really hate in a romance.
As I’ve been re-listening to this series, another thing strikes me as to why this has never been one of my favorite Mary stories. In a way, Volume 2 – which is technically books 3 and 4 of the series – is really a “reconciliation” story. We get the initial rush of first romance and the couple’s dance to make it real in books one and two. Then Sam LEAVES for 3 YEARS and book 3 is really them reuniting. I’ve never liked reconciliation stories. For me, the best part of a romance is that initial meet and in a reunion that’s over. In this case, not only have our guys met and declared their love, but instead of an epic reunion, we get (IMHO) a very weak and somewhat frustrating reunion sequence.
Sam, in book 3, is mostly a bossy jerk. He pretty much just tells Jory that he loves him and so Jory should take him back – and after not much fight, Jory does. I gotta tell you, Sam did NOT convince me he’d done any changing (not until book 4, really) so I was kinda thinking Jory should have kept saying NO or at least made Sam grovel a hell of a lot more.
In any case, he does take Sam back and there are some really hot sex scenes and some sweet declarations from Sam, but Jory looks like a bit of a pushover here.
Then we move on to book 4, which is all about Sam deciding to come out of the closet at work and Jory doing a lot of dumb things and being in danger all the damn time.
On the one hand, Sam and Jory together are amazingly, wonderfully, sweet and hot. All the waffling, other people’s weddings and the big “mystery” kind of made me crazy. This just wasn’t my favorite Mary story though I am a big Sam Kage fan.

Audio
Having Paul Morey do the narration made this a really wonderful listening experience. I thought he really did justice to both Sam and Jory and the unique voices he gives to all the other characters helped them to stand out instead of blur in a seemingly endless line of names. It was also great for continuity as he did Volume one. Unfortunately he does not do books 5 or 6 (the next two in the series.)
I think he excels at giving depth and emotion and his sense of timing helps make the dialog pop.

Five stars to Paul Morey!
I'd read the four books back when it was published by Club Lighthouse Publishing then bought the edited Dreamspinner version. 5 stars all the way but it was Paul Morey's narration that truly brought this series to life for me.
His interpretation of Det. Sam Kage is brilliant and the rest of the story is narrated with expression and just the right pacing but audiobook fans will know what I mean.

Almost but....
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes and no. I love Calme's books, but her dialogue is infuriating.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mary Calmes again?
Not sure. When I read her books, I love the concept's but her dialogues are so juvenile. Here you have mature grown men going through difficult situation but then the dialogue does not reflect what just happened. It is painful to listen to.
Which scene was your favorite?
All the scene where the two characters actually communicated a point.
What would have made this romance irresistible?
The dialogue being better

Passionate teen romance...
The personal insights written into the storyline could sometimes amaze me but the character inconsistencies were painful at times. The main character and his cop boyfriend didn't really grow together, their personal interactions outside of sex were that of two teens, the end doesn't leave you wanting to be them but glad you aren't. It's an entertaining read, but don't expect inspiring.

Good story but does have a lot of bouncing around
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The way Jory goes from one thought to the next and when people don't keep up with him it can be hilarious. Laughed out loud several times during vol. 1 & 2.
I want to start by saying I really love Mary Calmes books. I did however have a few things that got to me by the end and could just be my own pet peeves. 1 - I understood by the first volume that EVERYONE loves Jory and all the men want to sleep with him or be with him. This seemed so overdone that I started cringing when it still continued in this book. She also repeatedly goes over this with his brother Dane as well as Sam but Jory is focused on the most. Really? No one is LOVED by all. If you follow the series - these are NOT stand alone books so the author should not be repeatedly going over the stuff in the first volume and I see this is a pattern that is to continue in Bulletproof which I am listening to now. 2 - I usually find the endearment "baby" a total turn on till Sam used it so much that it lost the effect. 3 - Jory has consistently through both volumes tried to remain friends with guys that want to still be in his bed. HELLO???? If they still want to be in your bed then they don't see you as just a friend and Jory comes across clueless is this regard. On the upside he has a quick wit, charming personality and I love the fact that his filter is usually turned off and says what he thinks. That is refreshing.

Wonderful Narration
Paul Morey nailed Jory's personality perfectly. The voices were very distinguisable. I am in awe. I've listened to a few other books where the voices sounded put on and almost cartoonish. Not so here. It really sounded like different people were narrating. The book itself was excellent and I am a big fan of Mary Calmes, especially this series which continues with Bulletproof.

AMAZING!!! AWESOME!!! So Funny!
I have never been just as freaked out and scared like the character in a book like I was when Jory was scream while he staked out the house of his very own kidnappers in this book. OMG! While he screamed, I screamed... OMG! This was the best squeal I have ever listen too. I loved it. I was sooo utterly pissed at Sam for leaving Jory in book 1 but, I am kinda glad he did now, b/c Jory is just so super Funny now and so much stronger.
The drama, kidnapping and danger Jory gets into is just crazy, but how Jory gets out of it is just re-donk-u-lus! Like how Jory gets kidnapped, then the kidnappers get car jacked with Jory in the back of the car... OMG! I laughed so hard I almost pee my pants. Best Squeal Ever. And the SMEX! HOT!
Narration was great. Paul did a great job with this book to bring out Jory's strength and growth in his personality from Sam leaving him. It totally shows. And the totally ironic scenes, like when the kidnappers get car jacked... OMG! If Paul didn't narrate that right... that scene would have bombed... but Paul did it sooo great.. and I really felt like Jory was a real person talking to me. I LOVED IT! AMAZING>!!!
Great Buy/Credit

3.5 stars rounding up (for both story & narration)
This series and its editing hasn't been Paul Morey's best work but for growly Sam Kage I can forgive alot.
I'm debating between a long, ranting review or just saying how TSTL was Jory at about 90% of the story and call it a day.
Don't get me wrong. I own the audiobook since 2013 and the book since 2012. They used to be a comfort read but growing up and maturing as a reader I started noticing things that were just too unbelievable and the story started losing credit. So here I am in 2021 amazed (not in a good way) with Jory and his unique ways (not a compliment) of dealing with everyone and everything.
Sam really needed to do a lot more grovelling and not so much with the cave man but darn it all it's why we love him. Frankly the scenes together between Sam and Jory are the best thing in the story and everything else is a lot of daytime drama.

A Matter of Time Vol 2
Volume 2 was just as strange a reading experience as Volume 1 was. This book had the same problems as the previous book: over the top, crazy plot that was all over the place, poor characterization, and really flat, stilted dialogue that sounded really peculiar and not how people talk. All the characters seemed to act and respond in the same way, with just slight variations. However, I was still weirdly invested in the book. Once again, not sure how to recommend this book, but I am going onto book 3.

Not for me
I finished this book but even for fiction the storyline was unbelievable , though there were parts that were interesting, hence the 2 stars. The main character, Jory, was irritatingly stupid but still he managed to solve a case that the 'inept' police couldn't. The narrator's voices were so unsuitable for the characters he was supposed to be portraying it was almost a joke.

The book is a filler
This is an add on to the first book. There is not much substance to it other than endless repetition and a slow degrading of what was learnt in the first book. The reading in this book is better than the first.
On the tech side. The audio book failed to download to my kindle and there was no refund option available.

Interesting story
I really like this series though it feels like I shouldn't. Basically an oblivious twink has the ability to turn regular people into dominating psychopaths who all want to feed him.

A good second installment
This was a good follow up to volume 1. Paul Morey again delivers with Jory and Sam... actually I think Sam was even better in this book. Growly and gravelly, but also full of passion for Jory.

More of the same!
Volume 2 is as good as the first volume with the same whit and pathos - the characters are developing nicely and you feel like spending time with old friends. Paul Morey continues to breathe life into the characterisations.

Finished, but it was a bit of a struggle
Firstly, I know it's escapist fiction. And the main character wants to be 'dominated' but this book really does step over the edge in places where repeated 'no' is ignored. And, yes, I've read other stories where people change their mind in the heat of passion, but this made me really, really uncomfortable in places. If you've ever had an emotionally manipulative partner then this book isn't for you as you'll be hoping that Jory just walks away and tells Sam where to go.

buyers remorse
all of jory's relationships are abusive, including his relationship with sam. it gets really distressing and boring to hear man after man after man manhandle, abuse and ignore jory's "no's". zero discussions about boundaries or consent and jory doesn't do shit to improve his mental health. i regret buying vol 2 after listening to vol 1. it's more of the same and somehow both distressing and boring. i really enjoy calme's other works so this really sucks.

such an addictive series to listen to
A Matter of TIme Vol 2 contains the 3rd & 4th instalment of the series. Not a lot happened action wise in the 3rd instalment, it was more about Jory and Sam reconnecting, and I am so glad that for once Jory made Sam work for their relationship.
All the action returned in the 4th, there was so much happening here. Jory really manages to get himself into some crazy situations.
I enjoyed all of the OTT storyline right until the very end - not sure why it was necessary, and I went from enjoying the storyline to feeling 'meh' about Sam's actions. It just felt out of character for Sam.......but I've decided to not let the ending ruin my enjoyment of reading Vol 2 and will continue on with the series.
Really enjoying listening to the audios of this series so far. I'm so disappointed seeing that the next book has a different narrator for Sam & Jory - I've listened to the sample and I just can't, the next narrator sounds so flat in comparison. So, I'll stick to the ebook version for the next book, Bulletproof. Can't wait to see what ridiculous drama Jory gets up to next.

Enjoyed it
Part 2 of the Jory & Sam show, where we finally get to see Jory & Sam come to together and stay to together while navigating friends, family & kidnappings.
Jory & Sam are one of my favourite couples and I will listen to their story at least once a year. You can not go wrong with a Mary Calmes story.

Yet another overwraught destructive relationship
Would you try another book written by Mary Calmes or narrated by Paul Morey?
Not by this author. The story continues from volume 1 and well into the story it had repeated itself again and again and again The character of Sam showing up everytime Jory is out. It's called stalking. Jory pulls away, Sam grabs his arm, Jory takes a step back Sam closes the distance etc etc etc Both volumes could be one book and the story not loose anything
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Generally OK but a little slow.
Any additional comments?
I'm a little over these destructive relationships in M/M novels written by a female. Why do they assign M/F to M/M relationships? Why can't they be equals? Another character actually comments that their relationship is the same as a strong male, weak female relationship. Jory started as pretty strong at the beginning of Volume 1. But the longer he was in the relationship the weaker he became. The Sam character is a manipulative bastard verging on the sadistic. After 3 hours Sam had Jory in bed yet again and it was almost a rape. I had hoped the story would allow Jory to move onto another lover but alas no. That's when I turned it off never to return.
