Story
Seeing how it doesn’t have a set doctrine or dogma, there is no way to best practice Norse paganism. There is also no scripture or a “holy book”, which makes it ideal for people who wish to feel free and authentic to themselves while practicing spirituality. The way Norse paganism is practiced vastly varies from region to region, and there is no “correct” way to practice it. However, it still involves adhering to some tenets, customs, and beliefs. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of modern Norse paganism.

Hear the original tales of Thor, Odin, and Loki, as the Vikings heard them long ago. Enjoy these ancient tales of tragedy, death, glory, and love, with all the gory and mystic details left out of the Hollywood versions. This collection, The Prose Edda, was the first time the Viking myths were assembled and written down in plain prose (before then, they existed only as oral poems). This abridged edition has only removed sections dealing with technical rules for writing poetry in the Viking style, but has included all the myths and legends.

Modern Norse Paganism is more of a spiritual path than a religion. It is based on pre-Christian Northern European people’s ancient customs, beliefs, worldviews, and folkloric practices. It is also an essential subdivision of the more prominent modern religious movement, which has come to be known as “Heathenism/Heathenry”. People who practice Norse Paganism might sometimes refer to themselves as “Heathens”.

This book is an exploration of the wisdom in the Viking Age poem "Havamal", specifically as it relates to the average person who isn't a scholar of Old Norse, or even an enthusiast of Viking culture. This book is for the layman, the average person who simply wants to improve their life using proven advice. The poem "Havamal" is earthy, cynical, stoic, and grim in its depiction of human life. Havamal means “The Words of the High One”. The poem's speaker is none other than Odin, King of the Gods, who has traveled the many worlds seeking power and suffered greatly in his quest.

In a series of chapters dealing with rune pairs, listeners will learn the historical meaning of each individual rune and its use and meaning now, in contemporary culture. But as Paxson shares, the real power of the runes comes from internalizing them and using their symbols as sources of wisdom and strength.

Publisher's Summary
An accessible yet in-depth guide to an increasingly popular pre-Christian religious tradition of Northern Europe.
Heathenry is one of the fastest growing polytheistic religious movements in the United States today.
In A Modern Guide to Heathenry, listeners will have the opportunity to explore the sacred stories of the various heathen gods like Odin, Frigga, Freya, and Thor, and will be granted a look into the devotional practices of modern votaries. Blots, the most common devotional rites, are examined in rich detail with examples given for personal use. Additionally, listeners are introduced to the concept of wyrd, or fate, so integral to the heathen worldview.
Unlike many books on heathenry, this one is not denomination-specific, nor does it seek to overwhelm the listener with unfamiliar Anglo-Saxon or Norse terminology. For Pagans who wish to learn more about the Norse deities or those who are new to heathenry or who are simply interested in learning about this unique religion, A Modern Guide to Heathenry is the perfect introduction. Those who wish to deepen their own devotional practice will find this book helpful in their own work as well.

Excellent
I love this book and am always lending my paper copy to new pagans. It explains the meaning of the lore and gives an actual framework of engaging with the sacred. It is a great place to start, but also isn't overly simplistic. I have been practicing for over ten years and it can be a chore to read through many modern pagan books because they are written for "baby witches," and the deep knowledge is buried in the remedial. This book totally sidesteps that. She is a talented and contacted practitioner and this work shows it.

An Eclectic Guide to Heathenry.
First of all, too understanding of racist Folkist beliefs. While this does include alot of the broad aspects and of Heathenry, it contains thirty times more personal interjection. it instructs the reader to do things that have no basis in historical reconstruction, and doesn't explain why the reader should do this. Combining different pagan beliefs to create a narritave.
Someone who practices this way isn't practicing wrong, in fact the author is clearly very well read on the diversity of practice that goes into her beliefs. However this isn't a good starting point for a new reader, though it is a good perspective in understanding the broader Heathen community, though it doesn't represent the majority.

great info
There is great information here. I don't agree with everything that the author has to say, and certainly that's ot a requirement. I will say that for people just introducing themselves to heathenry, its s great starting point, but like all subject matter, get a wide variety of references and ensure those are also accurate/reputable. I do like that she gives more credence to UPG than most other authors, which I think is important for any practitioner to consider, as it is all about the personal and spiritual experience when it comes down to it.

Great book for those wanting to know more!
This was a fantastic book for my family who is looking to know more about modern Heathenry. It gave a great rundown of many gods and goddesses--history, what they help with, who they protect, and how to honor them. We will probably buy a hardcopy of the book to have on hand because there are definitely things we will want to see with our eyes. Some of the blessings scripts have words in their own language and it's just something we want to be able to physically hold. Will be looking for more on this topic as well.
I struggled with the high pitch of the narration at first, but it actually worked well for the long car ride at keeping me alert. I was able to stay awake and attend. I would consider listening to other books with the same narrator.

A great way to learn of the old gods
If you need a tutorial on the practices and lore of the gods, this book hits the nail on the head. She goes into such great detail about the ways to honor the gods/goddesses, but also teaches you that there is no right or wrong way to honor your deity’s if you’re doing it with respect.
Also touches base on the general stories of our lore. Which really helps settle you into the narrative and allow yourself to understand the practices of honoring each god or goddess.
