Publisher's Summary

Inspired by true events, A More Perfect Union is an epic story of love and courage, desperation and determination, and three people whose lives are inescapably entwined…

Henry O’Toole sails to America in 1848 to escape the famine in Ireland, only to face anti-immigrant prejudice. Determined never to starve again, he changes his surname to Taylor and heads south to Virginia, seeking work as a traveling blacksmith on the prosperous plantations.

Torn from her home and sold to Jubilee Plantation, Sarah must navigate its intricate hierarchy. And now an enigmatic blacksmith is promising her not just the world but also her freedom. How could she say no?

Enslaved at Jubilee Plantation, Maple is desperate to return to her husband and daughter. With Sarah’s arrival, she sees her chance to be reunited at last with her family—but at what cost?

Amazing

I’m not usually one to give 5 star reviews, but this audiobook was so, so good that I had to sing its praise. I purchased it as the daily deal, and knew nothing about the story or author, but really enjoyed the short sample. I’ve already recommended it to my mom. The performances were all incredible, and frankly, I really think they brought their characters to life. Please take a chance and try adding it to your library… You won’t be disappointed.

A wonder! Worth your time and credit!

What a surprise this book was for me! I’m not sure what drew me in, this was just such an unlikely subject for me but it proved I need to be a little more open to unlikely subjects! The writer does an excellent job of weaving these two characters lives together through similar yet completely different experiences. The harshness and cruelty of both characters realities is not spared in this book, and I felt it, but I also felt the hope the author threaded throughout the story, so well done! The narrators were very good, a few voices were off here and there but not enough to knock off a star. I wanted more at the end but the end was perfect and it left me…satisfied! Spend the credit!

Loved the story…….narration was painful

The 3 narrators were very good when they were speaking in their own character’s voice, but when they had to speak for someone else (for example when Sarah had to narrate as if she was Henry) the narration was horrible. I definitely recommend the book - just not to audible version.

Beautiful Love Story

Wow! Great story. Great narration. Well written. Held me captivated from beginning to end. Fiction, but a lot of truths of the time.

A Difficult Story

There was so much suffering here and I couldn't imagine how Henry and Sarah could ever be together. The side story about Maple was infuriating and painful. There are people who take their suffering out on others, I know, but ... I will admit I skipped the last few chapters after Maple AGAIN tried to create trouble for Sarah. I guess I need a little more light in my stories than the last chapter.
This is evocatively written and the narrators were all awesome. I felt the pain the characters were going through but I reached a point where I couldn't take it anymore and skipped to the end. My weakness.

Unforgettable

The author has mad skills. SO WELL WRITTEN! Instantly became an all time favorite. The story is an unflinching look at life on a Virginia plantation. You will love this book UNLESS: 1) you like your history sugar coated. 2) you like descriptive sex scenes.
The author and the readers bring characters, with their own perspectives, to life. The plot twists and turns till I found myself yelling advice back at the car speakers. Absolutely wonderful.

The Title Got Me

I was intrigued by the title and the story sucked me in. I enjoyed this book more than expected. Slavery is a theme I don't often read about. This book although fiction gave some historical perspective that reawakened in me the horror of that practice and it's long term consequences on every one in our society.

The story flow was good and the voicing of the author was great.
I was surprised by the ending but I appreciated it.
