Publisher's Summary
A classic Marple mystery, read by Emilia Fox.
The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Miss Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.' A childish practical joke? Or a hoax intended to scare poor Letitia Blacklock? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out…

Awesome performance! No spoilers in this review
I love Emilia Fox and her narration is perfect for dear Agatha. (Try 4.50 from Paddington she rocks that one too)
She injects so much humour ( note the part repeatedly referring to wise old ladies as "old pussies" - I think she is trying not to laugh!) and feeling into the characters and does outstanding male voices. Her portrayal of The character of Mitzi made me smile- her voice is mostly warm, not shrill but not so warm that you feel sleepy.
I always look for Emilias reading of Agatha to have a light break from a male voice- often that of dear Hugh Fraser, -another favourite of mine.
This is a fantastic mystery and kept me guessing for days. I would say it's definitely under-rated and should be up there with Orient Express! Maybe just after evil under the sun???
Emilia rocks Miss Marple - just purrrfect.
Loved this book, will read again, performed with such delicacy, more like a play rather than the reading of a novel enjoy....clock strikes 6.30 pm....

Entertaining narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Comedic in a warm way, an engaging puzzle.
What did you like best about this story?
Narration is excellent, loved all the voice characterisations, even if a touch Allo Allo at times.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I have savoured the narration (listened to it daily from the exercise bike!).
Any additional comments?
I would recommend this as great entertainment, a good story, very well narrated.

Great story, terrible narration
As always, the story was great. However, the narrator's accents were horrible. Especially for Bunch, Mitzi and Bunny. I'd recommend reading the book.

A brilliant Miss Marple Story
I love this audio book. It keeps the listener guessing. There are many really good characters. An unlikely murderer. Agatha Christie fans will love it.

Terrible narration
I really like this Marple story so was pleased to see a version that wasn't narrated by Joan Hickson (great in the tv role but not reading them). I wish I hadn't bothered. Emilia Fox is just awful. The only character voices that don't make your ears bleed are Marple, Braddock and Lettie. I've since found a site with a version read by rosemary leach and it's far superior but given it's age, isn't available as a download, just free to listen. The hunt for a decent Marple audiobook (not dramatised) continues....

Excellent story, good performance
I was at the edge of my seat, so to speak, up until close to the end. An excellent story. The performance was better than the original Hickson ones, but I do have to say that Emilia Fox gave some characters extremely exaggerated voices which turned some characters into caricatures (e.g. breathless squeaky ones or simpering ones) which is a shame. Her acting of Miss Marple herself was quite excellent though. All in all I did enjoy it very much.

Good book but.....
This was a good book as all Agatha Christie’s, but I found the voice of the vicar’s wife ‘Bunch’ so very squeaky and immensely irritating., which ruined the whole experience for me. I wouldn’t listen to another by Emilia Fox.

perfectly read and one of the good Christie's
Emilia Fox has a lovely reading voice, so it was a great bed time story. The murderer was predictable but I didn't get the motive, so still got a sense of denouement

Emilia Fox does a fine job
Any additional comments?
I was sceptical as to what to expect having got used to Joan Hickson narrating the Miss Marple stories - but must say I was pleasantly surprised !
I would be happy to listen to some of her other Marple narrations.

Superior, but not quite outstanding narration
I am a Christie fan and I have come to cherish all of Emilia Fox's performances beyond Dame Agatha. This is a good story well performed, but as I say in the title not quite as well rendered by Ms Fox. Still it's far above average and she remains one of the top performers of audiobooks.
