Story
True-crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace. As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls - haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

She bursts into my life like a storm, and nothing is the same again. One by one, I watch as my friends fall under her spell. Only I see that her smiles don’t reach her cold, furious eyes. And when I’m accused of things I didn’t do, when my home is vandalized, I know she’s behind it. But she only lets her mask slip when no one is looking, so if I say anything, I’ll look crazy. So when the baby shower comes around, I’m sitting on a velvet sofa in a posh hotel room, surrounded by balloons. But that afternoon, I finally learn the unbelievable truth. There is no baby....

Publisher's Summary
An electrifying tale of psychological suspense and revenge at an elite boarding school where secrets run deep.
Now I'm in charge, the gates are my gates. The rules are my rules.
It's an incendiary moment for St Oswald's school. For the first time in its history, a headmistress is in power, the gates opening to girls.
Rebecca Buckfast has spilled blood to reach this position. Barely 40, she is just starting to reap the harvest of her ambition. As the new regime takes on the old guard, the ground shifts. And with it, the remains of a body are discovered.
But Rebecca is here to make her mark. She'll bury the past so deep it will evade even her own memory, just like she has done before. After all...
You can't keep a good woman down.
"A dark world of emotional complexity and betrayal, where twist follows twist and nothing is what it seems." (Alex Michaelides, best-selling author of The Silent Patient)
"Exhilarating. Addictive. Fierce." (Bridget Collins, best-selling author of The Binding)
"A psychological thriller you can't put down and an antiheroine you won't forget." (Harlan Coben)

I love a suspense story that keeps me guessing throughout the book. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, a new twist sent me back to guessing again. Both narrators are excellent--so much so that I listened to the entire book in two days. Definitely worth a credit.

Not worth it
I’d read other reviews that said this book stands on its own without reading two predecessors, but I’m not sure that it does. It dragged on for me I didn’t find the characters very engaging. The male narrator. was primarily just a tool to allow the female character to tell a story. The story seemed like the author made a mountain out of the proverbial molehill.

Excruciatingly Slow
There were several times where I felt I wanted to fast forward to the end just to get to the "who dun it" part. I stayed the course but I wanted to tear my hair out because it was so slow.
I got a little tired of the old fashioned views vs the new way of doing things back and forth. I felt like each chapter I was beaten over the head with it. After a while, I didn't see what any of that had to do with the ensuing mystery.
The police should have been informed from the very beginning but no one makes a phone call. That was so odd to me. "We found a body!" "Call the cops?" "Nah, we'll deal with this in house." I know this is a fiction book but this premise was absolutely unbelievable.
The narrators were excellent. Alex Kingston was a joy to listen to. I'm unfamiliar with the male narrator but he was pleasant to listen to.
Overall, it was a book that kept me listening despite the slog. If it wasn't for the mystery at hand, I would have stopped and returned this book.

Worth 3 Credits..!!!!.. Phenomenal..!!
Seldom am I moved to gush over a book ,.. but this one , quite frankly was stupendous….
However, they could have shaved off an hour of listening time if they’d dropped the dates at the start of each short chapter…. My only complaint
