Publisher's Summary
The dream of their own farmstead and a good life in America had brought Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund across the Atlantic to pioneer the virgin prairie of Dakota Territory. But Roald's tragic disappearance in a winter storm turned Ingeborg's dreams into a living nightmare. Against nearly impossible circumstances and overwhelming grief, she struggles to keep the farm and her family together. When spring appears, Roald's distant cousin, Haaken, arrives to help with the heavy field work, and Ingeborg is able to once again concentrate her efforts on home and children. After the bleak winter, she cannot ignore the joy that Haaken brings to their lives or the attraction she begins to feel toward him. When Roald's brother from Norway also arrives to help the family, things become even more complicated around the simple prairie dwelling.

charming historical novel, well performed
I read the first book in the series, found listening a bit harder to follow but charming. I enjoy all the historical detail. The narrator was very good. Pauses between scenes could have been better, and occasionally a flat tone, but overall, a well-modulated voice, with different voices and appropriate accents.

Robotic narration - good story
The story is very good but the narrator's voice sounds robotic much of the time. No inflection at the end of sentences. It's very distracting from the excellent plot by Ms. Snelling.

Good Story-Terrible Narration
I am listening to this as a prequel of sorts, as I started with the Blessing series. This is a different narrator and she is terrible. Her voice goes too loud for no reason at times and it becomes hard to listen as it is so annoying— then She also has a habit of her voice going so monotone at times. She also doesn’t pronounce some Names the right way. I also miss the Norwegian accents as the other narrator did. Just very amateurish.

Farming in untamed land, Wonderful Story!
It interested me to learn how the land was broken up to farm. It took a long time. The characters were fascinating! How difficult it had to be to leave family from another country then go into a place not established.
The performance was excellent!
The story itself kept me listening daily. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Immigrant History Retold
Laurianne Snelling is at the top of historical fiction. I enjoyed and appreciated this faith-based writing. The Red River of the North has long been one of my favorite series, and I was thrilled to listen to it audibly. She paints such a clear picture of what immigrant settlers life must have been like on the prairie, creating a curiosity and desire to visit the area someday!

I so much enjoy Lauraine Snelling's books! Each one is full of Norwegian immigrant stories of hardship, love of family, and working out problems. My problem is I can't stop reading them or listening to them! Wonderful book!
