Story
When our hero, Victor, needs a pseudonym to avoid embarrassing his wife after deciding to pen a book about up-sticking to Greece, he dusts off his original name of V.D. Bucket, the name he was stuck with after being abandoned in a bucket as a baby. As Victor adapts to his adopted homeland, he battles an obsession with the exacting hygiene standards he demanded during his illustrious career as a public health inspector against the rather less exacting standards of rural Greece. His attempts to master the complexities of the language lead to a number of embarrassing misunderstandings.

Publisher's Summary
Alexandra, a product of Greek Fire. Born into the cradle of civilization. Weaned on the teachings of ancient Greek philosophers, thrilled by the bravery of Spartans and thousands of years of cultural heritage.
Peter, her future husband, a tea-drinking, digestive-dunking product of British society. Working to make a living with no real ambitions or dreams. But then, he fell in love and everything changed.
At times hilarious, always embarrassing, Peter's story of how he became Greek enough to live with a Greek family includes a near-death experience on a mountain road, eccentric aunts, Greek bureaucracy, melting flip-flops, and the decision to demolish the much-loved family home, replacing it with a five-story apartment block, complete with a Parthenon on the roof terrace.
To cap it all, someone thought it a good idea to put Peter in charge of the rebuilding project, despite not speaking a word of Greek or being able to read Greek contracts. What could possibly go wrong?

Cleverly written and clearly narrated
Having never had an audible book before, it took a little while for me to get used to the voice of the narrator. However, by the end of the first chapter, I enjoyed being read to, and I listened to two or three chapters every evening. The story really paints a picture of living in Greece. This is so well written, I could imagine everything as though I was living there too. There are many hilarious moments and you'll learn that Peter has a very mischievous Greek wife called Alex! There's never a dull moment with these lovely people and you'll laugh at their antics, feel anxious for them when things go wrong and feel uplifted when things go right. I didn't want the book to finish and I think it would make a great television series.

Very relaxing, funny 'read.'
I have been listening to this audible book in the car as I commute. Found myself lost in the story, I was taken off to somewhere else, away from my ho-hum commuting. But, now I need the sun, sand, sea and mousaka! I'll just remember not to bother renting a car whilst I'm in Greece!

So many disasters, but so much amusement
I had quite a few laughs listening to this memoir. I found myself dreading the unfortunate predicaments that the author repeatedly finds himself in, because the narrator keys you up to anticipate them so well. This book will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotional outbursts from the main characters - don’t be surprised if you end up wincing or swearing as you listen to their antics. It was an engaging listen from start to finish and I really liked the traditional music at the beginning and end of each chapter.

Lovely life journey
A great ‘feel good’ story of 2 people coming together and blending their cultures. Very relatable if you are Greek it have married into a Greek family. Having visited Glifada and Greece for a few months, I can appreciate the places and local stories. It’s made me want to go again asap! Beautiful. Thoroughly enjoyed your story.
