Our new home was supposed to be a chance to leave our past behind. But was moving here the worst mistake of our lives? All our friends and family were gathered, glasses raised to toast our fresh start. It should have been a night for happiness and celebration. Story
The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Story
Becoming a stepmother is the best thing that ever happened to me. My favorite part of every day is picking Charlie up from school, watching her little rucksack bounce behind her as she skips over for a hug. I love the feel of those thin freckled arms around my waist. After a few rocky months of panic attacks when her mother deserted her, Charlie is flourishing. But the day Charlie’s mother Bronwyn returns without warning—showering Charlie with gifts and making promises she can’t keep—fear ripples through me. She doesn’t know just how far I will go to protect that little girl.

A Bit Tedious
NO SPOILERS! This book literally has no likable characters. Both women just drone on and on. We get it one wants to have a baby. Then the other is self consumed. There are no thrills, the ending has a twist but not a good one. This book is tedious and packed with inner dialogue.

A Flop
First of all congrats to the writer for getting a book accepted, written and published but that’s as far as the praise goes…
The book is juvenile, petty, silly, flimsy and chaotic (and not in a good way)
The characters are completely unlikeable, foolish, childish and one dimensional.
(Spoiler alert) But who goes on the run to the next county (30miles) and stays in a house owned by a family member thinking you won’t be found???
All whilst hoping the safe house has those blinds you like??? Girl, you’re on the run?! Where’s the perspective?
And don’t get me started on the ‘lodger’ you met for 90seconds - who appeared out of thin air and you assumed it was safe to move him in ( a strange man moving in with you and two children?? Ummm OK) Did I mention they’re on the run??? Where’s the logic?
The women in the book are written as materialistic weak, jealous idiots and the men… are these weird watery parodies of masculinity no one has a personality - they just do stuff
The main protagonists oldest child gave nothing to the plot- and was extremely annoying -I believe he added nothing to the overall story and should’ve been swapped out for a dog - writers do this often they write children into plots to give characters reason and you can feel the child becoming cumbersome and adding nothing (especially dialogue) to the story whilst constantly needing to be accounted for.
The ‘ rich’ people in the book are so unbelievable because their habits and tastes are so cheesy and bad… (is that intentional I don’t know - they’re upwardly mobile) but who wears high heels (wedges) and a white mini dress and a smoky eye for breakfast??? None of the “rich” women I know - the descriptions of ‘taste’ in the book sounded so silly it felt like the reader hadn’t met any of the wealthy people of Poole/Dorset or done any research/character development… (I lived in the area for a few years and didn’t know the book was about this area when I started it but it just made it so cringey)
Theres a total lack of suspense in the run up to the final act of the book, the plot ‘ twist’ at the end was silly, unnecessary and obvious (Spoiler) the hitman/antagonists character could’ve have been explored - we could’ve gone in to his past/given him some sort of pathology but nothing!- This book is a complete no - this is the first review I’ve actually written on audible just because it was so bad!

Is this how they think rich people talk?
Daaaarling, of course I remembered to get your gourmet lamb sausages, I do know how much you love those gourmet sausages... are the gourmet lamb sausages ready yet darling?
Plot is ridiculous. SPOILERS!!!: Yes let's do a moonlight flit to a different area to avoid the loan Sharks and just move one county over it's not as if they would probably bump into the loan Sharks in Tesco (or Waitrose if you're the posh character). Its a book of women just simpering and pandering to the men who act like wet lettuces and make stupid decisions. Did I mention the sausages? The part where she said she made an extra effort to look sexy that morning, smokey eye makeup, heels, toe rings and hair curled for breakfast to show him what he's missing made me cringe. I definitely expected better from this author, I think she was distracted by eating her dinner while writing, maybe she was eating sausages (gourmet lamb ones for realism). Yes the hubby is 50k in debt and was planning to sell the baby.. give me a break.
The book should have been called A Complete Sausage instead of Stranger, because every single character in it is an absolute wet wipe of a sausage and I would advise you not to waste your time. Shalini is a great writer and I've enjoyed her books in the past and have read them all, which is why I'm so annoyed by this.
Great narrators though.

What. A. Story. Absolutely incredible. THE TWIST!! amazing
I’ll set the scene of our listening surroundings for some context; sat at work: a small office, mundane tasks and surrounded by gap year workers. My friend Daisy and I decide to listen to an audio book, a simple and uninteresting decision that led to our lives changing for ever.
This story was thrilling, gripping; twists and turns made us hold our breath and gasp in horror. A tale of two unlikely couples, living far from similar lifestyles, yet they end up intertwining into one another’s in more ways than one.
I will be honest with you, we did not like Danny as a character from the get go. She seemed a vain, baby obsessed gold digger who imposed an obscene amount of grief on her seemingly innocent husband, Marcus. However, I must say Danny proved us all wrong. She showed real independence and bad b energy, queen behaviour. And Marcus??! More like the M word- not to be spoken about. Disgusting, dirty man. As for Emily (or Annie?? Lol), she seemed absolutely mad for the majority of the story. Who in their right mind would uproot their lives, change their names and start again just because of debt?? There’s other ways round that surely. But it all made sense at the end. SPOILER ALERT!!! Turns out she was the one with all the secrets!! I mean having her baby daddy as Marcus was a real shocker to the system for Daisy and I. Cesca (the 3rd member of our group at work) was so confused bless her.
Anyway, this story was a real journey. It taught us so much, and left a special place in our hearts for the characters. We will be giving it a 4 1/2 stars. We have chosen not to award 5* because unfortunately Cesca wasn’t able to access the audio due to her phone not being able to update to the newest ioS as she has no storage. Now I understand this is by no means the authors fault, however we felt it was necessary to take into consideration as it did hinder the experience slightly.

Pretty tedious
One of those books that you listen to because you want to know what happens in the end, despite having to drag yourself through the rest of it.
I just wanted something light and entertaining for a 'day off' listen. It was certainly light.
Good narration.

Awesome!
Loved this book. Interesting story I wanted to keep listening to. Guessed the twist just before it happened, but it wasn’t an obvious story line. Really enjoyed the performances. Recommend!

Great performance really good story
As the book came together I could figure it out but even though I’m not surprised at the ending I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and enough that I’ll try other titles

Mystery with a final twist
It isn’t until the very last minutes that one of the mysteries gets resolved, I loved the final twist. Some aspects of the story aren’t very relatable though - your life is in danger, you see no other way than to go on the run, change your name… it doesn’t even cross your mind to speak to the police and then you move to a place less than 100 miles away from your old home? Stupidity gets punished is the moral of the story.

Tedious dumb
Put 2 stupid characters in a story with an unrealistic plot. This story is best played while you are asleep
