It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. Publisher's Summary
This story picks up exactly where book one left off. The Talbot family is evacuating their home amid a zombie apocalypse. Mankind is on the edge of extinction as a new dominant, mindless opponent scours in search of food, which happens to be non-infected humans. In this book are the journal entries of Michael Talbot, his wife, Tracy, and their kids, Nicole, Justin, and Travis. With them are Brendon, Nicole's fiancee, and Tommy, previously a Wal-Mart door greeter who may be more than he seems. Together they struggle against a ruthless, relentless enemy that has singled them out above all others.
The Talbots have escaped Little Turtle but to what end? On the run, they find themselves encountering a far vaster evil than the one that has already beset them. As they travel across the war-torn countryside, they soon learn that there are more than just zombies to be fearful of. With law and order a distant memory, some humans have decided to take any and all matters into their own hands. Can the Talbots come through unscathed, or will they suffer the fate of so many countless millions before them? It's not just the brains versus the brain-eaters anymore. The stakes may be higher than merely life and death, with eternal souls on the line.

Ok story, but demeans the military
The Good: The narrator did a great job. Would happily listen to any other books he has done.
The Bad: You lost me at zombie vampires. What started as a fairly entertaining story in book 1 (and a ho-hum intro in the prequel book) turned into a hokey sub-par b-rated movie really quick. And the survivors are utter idiots. Even a lay individual, with no real tactical training, would have to know that locking yourself in a building with only one entrance and bars on the windows is really, REALLY dumb move. If this was real (thank god it's not), these folks would die quickly.
The Ugly: Between the prequel and this book, it is glaringly obvious the individual did not do their research into the military, weapon systems, or any of our modern conflicts. I can overlook some weirdly unrealistic descriptions (an M249 is NOT a 65 pound machine gun), but the casual reference that our military members are wholesale murderers of innocent people made me quit the book in utter disgust. The insinuation that it was commonplace for my Army brothers and sisters to walk into a village and murder women and children as a stress reliever during the Iraq/Afghanistan wars is utterly irresponsible. I don't care if this is "fiction", it is fiction that references real-world elements and this reference is ludicrous. The writer could have handled the topic in a realistic and sincere fashion, but instead chose to blatantly label our military as callous slaughterers.
I don't care how good the books might be later on, I'm out.

Second one didn't get any better
Have to say I was not a huge fan of the first one but I figured I'd keep going, but it doesn't get better. Same problems as the first, biggest being the narrator does not fit the book. He really takes you out of what should be a exciting scenario. Also the main character is still just a giant wimp. He spends half the book complaining, whining, freezing or throwing up. Not to mention as a collective group of people they are all dumb and would never actually survive. Last, and not really spoiler alert because it's the very first thing in the book, but zombie vampires? A little much, even for me.

Oh god it gets worse
So much lazy writing. Sprinkled with product placement misogyny and a non cohesive story stuck together with sap .
The main character ah geez only in this contrived fantasy world would somehow have the benefit of people that would likely despise him as disposable as they are in his world.
You get an origin of his perception of women because he continuously calls his mother a narcissist “ my mommy didn’t love me enough” almost as an excuse to his abborrant personality. Add a nonsensical ending that was almost impossible to understand as the writer sacrifices the only partially capable woman in the tale . A pig named Charlotte a cow named Bessie . Ughhhh so lazy . My husband doesn’t understand why I’m torturing my self with this drivel?
To be honest i like bad tv once in a while this is just some next level awfulness. Like as if I keep hoping him to die and some other mechanism that has no logic only self gratification pulled out of the writers behind keeps this garbage human king of his stupid apocalypse fantasy.
I write this now knowing I still have another book in me because i am really bored and this is somehow better than social media. Or am I punishing myself for something. Ughhhh

I'm hooked!
so much better than I could have imagined! I was instantly connected to Talbot and his family from the first chapter of the first book. I love how it is written and I love "being inside Talbot's head." his antics always make me laugh even when I'm on the seat of my pants. I finished book 1 and 2 in less than a week. audible is hands down my favorite app. I love reading and audible makes it so easy for me to submerge myself in a story of someone else and somewhere else, and still be able to do any chores around the house, hang out with kids, and be in the car.

I truly loved it
The difference in view points from time to time is great to get to know more of the story and understand other characters in the series and to find out things that the MC doesn't know.
In themselves the different POV'S almost feel like a short story but they dont take you out of the bigger story overall.
highly recommend.

Enjoyed book 1, this one, not so much...
Enjoyed book 1 enough to grab book 2.
I immediately noticed:
- increased use of foul language
- use of "coincidence" to drive the story
- characters making "stupid" decisions, simply to create "situations"
The result? Book 2 is a significantly worse story than book 1.
Foul language in book 1 felt appropriate to the situation. In book 2, the characters cuss in general conversation. Why? This takes away from the impact of critical moments and gives the overall feel of just "trash talk".
Coincidences are okay when they don't feel like coincidences. In book 2, something happens, totally out of the blue, then, totally unexpectedly a zombie problem...repeat. The situations that pop up, just pop up, for no good reason.
For example, right at the beginning, they make their first stop (which no one wants to make) and for no good reason the "pretty lady" wants to have some sex right after getting out of the semi. Really? Needless to say...zombie shows up, somehow, without being noticed, just a few feet away. I didn't know women wanted to engage in sex right after climbing out the back of a semi-trailer, after running from a zombie horde. Who knew?
Not only is the situation stupid, but her response is even dumber. She doesn't tell Romeo there's a zombie behind him, she just screams and runs. Romeo doesn't make it, of course.
Our hero, the Protag, is almost a clueless idiot himself, right from the start. Zombies show up and he doesn't run, or even defend himself, for ridiculous reasons. Of course, he survives his stupidity, because, reasons.
The expectations I had after book 1 were quickly dashed into pieces. This feels like a "recipe book", following a story pattern, with standard ingredients, and out comes a dim shadow of the original creation in book 1.
Disappointment ensued.

So bad so happy these two books I got were free
Omg what the heck not even a little bit do I like anyone in this book. Only Henry and Tommy and the big black guy that was in this one. Even the first book but at lest it was the females I hated. I mean dose the writher hate women or something. Mean the way he writhing them I would but a bullate in there heads. And what type of Marin dose not teach his daughter how to shoot but only their sons. I mean not that much of a survivalist. Also his self awareness is not solder at all. It’s the worst I hope the hole group gets eaten let the dog and Tommy live just kill the rest. Waist of my time

Better than the first one
This second book is slightly better than the first despite some of the changes to the world and characters that I didn't really care for, there were also some minor improvements like making one of the characters portrayed as a "useless woman" in the first book into an actual fighting force and showing that females are in fact capable of driving even if they nit pick at her skill level. We both gain and lose some characters many remain 2 dimensional but some are improved upon, Tommy for instance still feels like a highlight of the book and seems to be shaping up to be some sort of "Mother Abagail" Freemantle type character but with more to him. It feels like there was a lot more action in this one but that also means more rambling in the main characters head, the book also felt it was necessary to go back and make fat jokes unnecessarily about dead characters from the first book in a flash back to before they died. The narrator still feels out of place but by this point hes grown on you and it would feel wrong to change him out, I should clarify he isn't a bad narrator he just doesn't fit the characters hes narrating. We don't really get any answers to questions from the first book and instead just get more questions but the story is progressing and I will give the author this, It's difficult to write a book this long about this type of scenario without filling it with repeated tedium or lots of sex which many other authors in the genre do which is why the internal ramblings don't do the story harm in my opinion. For free it's worth a listen but I honestly still can't recommend it culturally in 2021 except to older readers as the humor in it just feels like it's for a different generation.

Good premise, but ruined my a consistent misogynistic theme..
Misogynistic at every turn.. every female character is either shrilled, a nag or incompetent. The protagonists wife is written as a total incompetent moan that needs to be suffered and placated and who never really Gets the danger or situation they are in. Even the single attempt at a strong female character is subject to Low key homophobic jibes because she is lesbian. Narration is very good. But hard to hear a great narrator speak some of the lines from this book. I’m hoping the author has grown a little since this book was written.

the sexism, homophobia and racism of the main character make it unbearable. His attitude towards his wife and daughter made my physically wince, the attitude towards his neighbour who is gay is unbelievable - I quote "I have nothing against lesbians,I want to be one"!!! ,when it came to a side tale about a McDonald's worker who apparently wasn't white I gave up!! I'm sure some people could get past this but not me I'm afraid and I'm surprised he is so popular as a writer.

Plague
I’m enjoying these books immensely, it’s such a great story with awesome characters and the narrative is smashing. There are great one liners that make you laugh out loud, I get complaints from passengers in my car as I listen to the book but I give them the choice... listen or walk:)

Moving along
Introduction of a vampire is interesting but she's just a brief thing we're yet to know what she's really gonna mean. I've just two bones to pick. One being what alot of folk are saying about the male vs female attitude being quite out of date but to the writers due there really are people like this in the world so it's a believable attitude 🤔 tho unlikeable at times. The second is how shit a shot the supposed marine is? Now I'm no American so know only what TV has shown me but I would of thought that a man with as big a love of guns and experienced would be a bit of a better shot since he's spouting off critics to others and all the jargon to go with it.
But I'm enjoying the story none the less and looking forward to more.

Really good, with a twist compared to other zombie-books.
A little different and with the right amount of humor to it.👍
