Publisher's Summary

“With lush world building and lyrical prose, A River Enchanted feels like the echo of a folktale from a world right next to our own.” (Hannah Whitten, New York Times best-selling author of For the Wolf)

House of Earth and Blood meets The Witch's Heart in Rebecca Ross’ brilliant first adult fantasy, set on the magical isle of Cadence where two childhood enemies must team up to discover why girls are going missing from their clan.

Jack Tamerlaine hasn’t stepped foot on Cadence in 10 long years, content to study music at the mainland university. But when young girls start disappearing from the isle, Jack is summoned home to help find them. Enchantments run deep on Cadence: gossip is carried by the wind, plaid shawls can be as strong as armor, and the smallest cut of a knife can instill fathomless fear. The capricious spirits that rule the isle by fire, water, earth, and wind find mirth in the lives of the humans who call the land home. Adaira, heiress of the east and Jack’s childhood enemy, knows the spirits only answer to a bard’s music, and she hopes Jack can draw them forth by song, enticing them to return the missing girls.

As Jack and Adaira reluctantly work together, they find they make better allies than rivals as their partnership turns into something more. But with each passing song, it becomes apparent the trouble with the spirits is far more sinister than they first expected, and an older, darker secret about Cadence lurks beneath the surface, threatening to undo them all.

With unforgettable characters, a fast-paced plot, and compelling world building, A River Enchanted is a stirring story of duty, love, and the power of true partnership, and marks Rebecca Ross’ brilliant entry on the adult fantasy stage.

swept away

I stumbled upon this book at a book store and read a few pages and thought it sounded intriguing so I jotted down the title to look up later. After listening to the sample on audible and finding the reader to my liking I thought I'd give it a try. The story really swept me away and the narrator was amazing. The story feels fresh and original but at the same time somehow familiar, like a good fairytale. The push and pull between the two sets of main characters is well done, never over the top or sappy. I wish that Ruth Urquhart read all of Rebecca's books because after listening to the samples of her other works, which are read by other folks, I think I'll be reading the paper versions. Excited for the second book, which thankfully, Ruth is narrating!

Stunning

What a stunning book! It weaved a new land where the wind whispers secrets and an enchanted plaid is a protection against the spirits. Beautifully narrated; written like poetry. The plot is well conceived leading the reader to a satisfying conclusion, yet preparing for the sequel.

Beautiful performance but…

The story was atmospheric but so slow. The performance was absolutely stunning and really contributed to the entire vibe. Overall, I would recommend this story and even more importantly this performance.

Slow burn

This story was written beautifully, and the narration is the cherry on top. I enjoyed this take on magic and how the humans and “spirits” interact. Worth the listen of you enjoy in depth descriptions of fantastical places or near poetic lore. Be warned though I did not find this mystery fantasy a fast paced one.

Very descriptive and enchanting story

This was a wonderful read and I was drawn in from the very first moment! It has adventure, fantasy, heartache, reconciliation and more. I adored it all and the story was very easy to get lost in. I’d recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy, romance, adventure and lore.

Excellent story

I found out about this book from an Instagram page for harpists. When I got it I really couldn’t turn it off! I’m not sure if this is newly published and understand there will be a second book to finish the story. I can’t wait. And please put it on Audible. I can’t tell you how many series I have bought and then subsequent books aren’t on Audible or there are two missing in the middle of a series. So frustrating.
I cried my eyes out at the end of this story and just know there will have to be a happy ending for Jack and Adaira.

Mysterious & Mesmerizing

An expertly narrated story of a magical island divided by two warring factions told in five different points of view.

There’s mysteries, music, elemental spirits, two love stories, and a heartbreaking cliffhanger.

I’m looking forward to A Fire Endless publishing next week to see how it all ends!
