Story
Miriam Feldman’s life is happily bobbing along. Her family and close friends support her magic, and things are getting interesting with the wolf shifter. But smooth sailing turns to shark-infested waters when she plumbs the dark depths of her past to investigate her parents’ last con. In comparison, Miri’s new assignment should be easy: track down a demon to check a necklace for dark magic. Of course, nothing about demons is simple, and she finds herself forced to strike hard bargains with both demon hunters and an ancient vampire. Awesome.

Story
One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

I knew hot flashes were supposed to be hot, but I didn't expect flames. One day I'm in anger management, normalizing the cordial hate between me and my husband. The next, we're divorced, and he has taken both our house and the business we built together. I'm 40 years old and living above our empty restaurant, plotting my next move. And then the world around starts lighting up - literally catching on fire. I'm starting to think my defining characteristic may not be my snark or my cupcake-baking prowess, but spontaneous combustion.

Okay, yes, she worked too much and had fallen out of touch with all her friends, but that happened to everyone, right? And sure, she was feeling a little creaky in the mornings and couldn’t drink coffee after noon, but that was just life in middle age.

After finding my soon-to-be ex-husband together with my soon-to-be ex-assistant, I realize his "for better or for worse" didn't include my 40s. An extended vacation on a remote Italian island sounds like the perfect antidote to a midlife crisis - until I arrive. I'm expecting Chianti and pasta. What I get is a run-down bed-and-breakfast with the oldest Nonna in existence. There's something about this island. Something odd. Like how everyone keeps calling me Mamma or how I'm the first tourist in decades.

The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

Living back at Mom's place with her and Gram is not how this ex-district attorney intended to start the next chapter of her life, but I shouldn't be surprised it's where I ended up. You see, my family is cursed. Literally. At least that's what both Gram and Mom claim. I've never given much thought to their ridiculous superstitions, but when three local patrons from my mom's occult shop end up dead, even I'm a bit unnerved. Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Publisher's Summary
Miriam’s hot flashes leave her shvitzing, and 10 p.m. is the new midnight, but she still craves adventure, sexy times, and maybe a nap.
When Miri stole a demon artifact for a client, she never expected it to result in a magic curse. Failure to reverse it will mean the death of someone close to her, the end of her uneasy alliance with the head vampire, and open season on her family. As if that didn’t suck enough, her screw-up on a dangerous fact-finding mission may have kicked her sexual tension with the wolf shifter in the balls. At least she’s not obsessing over it, since fighting through a maze of mind games, tested loyalties, and secrets is consuming all her energy. So, glass half-full.
Now armed with her trusty to-do list, she’s determined to multitask her way to victory like a magic badass.

Fun series, avoid the audio
This a fun series that is developing well, with interesting world building, a great protagonist who has all the combined gravitas and insecurity of a woman at midlife, banter and action and great secondary characters. It's also one of the few audiobooks I've bailed on to go back to print. The narrator is nails-on-a-chalkboard awful with the French, Yiddish-inflected New York, British, and other accents. Her narration is mediocre otherwise, with odd choices of emphasis and inflection that are jarring but not unlistenable, but my god, when she has to do an accent, it's like she's being tortured, and she has a lot of difficulty maintaining the voice she's going for - her Brit is especially weird, as from sentence to sentence she has one character going from something close to RP to workingclass London and back. I kept trying, because I love audiobooks and am always delighted to choose audio over print, but I give up.
I do recommend the series, though. It's refreshing to meet a 42-year-old heroine, busily reclaiming herself and choosing to reinvent as a badass (her former husband's coming out is an obvious parallel to her own journey), negotiating a loving but not romanticized relationship with her teenager, wryly and rather pragmatically considering the possibilities of a romance with her friend and colleague and letting friendship develop first. There's a lot to like here and I'm looking forward to more.

Interesting and unique world building.
With the main character Merriam being a librarian/researcher, allows for really interesting historical stories and facts which add to the intrigue of the plot. The world created includes ethnic/religious themes which also brings in interesting elements. I read the first 2 books, so first one I listened to. The narrator did well with accents and non-english phrases, but to me, the voice didn't match what I expected Mirriam to sound like. Not saying that's bad, I just created something different from the books I read.

Enjoyable read/listen
A Shade Too Far (Magic After Midlife Book 3), my fifth read from author Deborah Wilde. Entertaining, fun read. Croix Provence's narration again made the 10-hour 36-minute tale pass quickly and adds greatly to the book's enjoyment she adds to the author's work with her voice adding an undercurrent of humor. I'll be reading more from this author. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

My favourite in the series so far
I really like the character development in this book, the main character is finally shedding some of her self doubt and leaning into the confidence build with age and experience. It feels like (as the reader) you're seeing her grow and blossom, while still struggling through finding her place in the world.
recommended listen for sure!

Another brilliant installment to the series
I love this series, because other than the paranormal aspect, it's so very relatable to 42-year-old me. Seeing a woman my age still grow, evolve, learn, and demand her space is as amazing as losing myself in this fantasy world and falling in love with a moody wolf. The plot is unique and engaging and the action as fast paced as I've come to expect from this series, and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!

Great Series
This is a fun series with some danger. It is unusual with an older (40 year old) lady who knows she has magic but has ignored it all her life after witnessing her parents murder, but started using it in book one as she had to and is learning how to use it. The series continues with a storyline which finishes with each book, but with a couple of ongoing stories. The characters are great and keep getting more interesting as the series goes on. I listened to this one on audible and enjoyed the narration.

Brilliant adaptation
Deborah Wilde has done it again. This story is full of the humour sarcasm and wit we have come to exspect from her. Miriam is once again in the thick of it steeling an demon artifact for her boss, which lands them both in big trouble. Now she has to keep her boss alive har family safe and try not to destroy the relationship she is building with a certain gruff wolf.
Love this story. I look forward to the next book.
The narration is excellent. Just perfect.
