Story
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

I’m a Gemini. Impulsive. Curious. Headstrong. A twin. Heir to a throne I know nothing about. And it turns out, I’m Fae. But of course, there’s a catch - all I have to do to claim my birthright is prove that I’m the most powerful supernatural in the whole of Solaria. And sure, technically that’s true, as I’m the daughter of the Savage King. But the bit they didn’t put in the brochure was that every single Fae in this Kingdom would claim my throne if they could.

Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive. So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king. Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.

Publisher's Summary
#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns with book one of the compelling Flesh and Fire series - set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.
Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.
However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania - she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission - one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then...end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.
Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit - it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

A credit lost.
Okay so over all I have it a rating of 2, but I actually am not remotely close to finishing the book and have no plans to so I decided to be generous. The truth is I regretted the purchase right after I made it. When I tried to return it Audible wouldn’t let me (I’ve been in a stretch of terrible purchases) so I decided since it’s costing me a credit I’ll make it work. The problem is it’s impossible!!!! The story is sooooooooo fricken slow that it reminds me of a soap opera, but worse! At least you get dramatic character out of each scene. The performance is barely there and why am I listening to and argument about one of the characters not announcing he was somewhere before startling another character for 20 flipping minutes! Or why one character should behave for 30 then gets released, does that SAME EXACT thing so we can listen to more argument about why that character needs to behave for another 10!!! I was seriously yelling at this book to move the bleep on so I’ve thrown in the white towel. She can have my credit. I’m not letting this book suck 19 hours outta my life that I’ll never get back.

This series was sooo needed!!
This could be a stand alone series!! However, this helps explain so much from the blood and ash series. I could not get enough. You are such a wonderful author, and the fact that you kept the same narrator was wonderful!! It felt like i could feel the familiar connection between sera and poppy. I literally have to relisten to the blood and ash series again so i can place the new info i have into the origional story and it has made it into an entirely new experience. I can not wait for March!! I also can not wait for the second book in this new prequel series. I listen to a lot of novels on audible. This is one of the few series i relisten to, please keep up the good work and bring us something as origional and lovely as these previous works. :)

Too much action
I wish the author would have spent more time building the characters and the story instead of describing every movement in painful detail, especially since it seems there's an altercation in each one.
Also, go mild with kick out, swing out, it's excessive.

Plot is Recycled Story of Poppy and Casteele
I’m a huge fan of Jennifer, but I won’t lie I’m very disappointed. It felt like I was reading blood and ash all over again with the only difference being a change in the characters names . I understand giving characters similar personalities trait, especially when are making the connection between the characters and their ancestors . But the whole entire story felt like a rip off version of Blood an dash. (Lust, betrayal, friendships, even familial bonds). I’m even more disappointed in that we did not learn more about the bonded wolven, how craven and the remenet were originally made, how the ascends managed to manipulate and erase history of the primals. I really expected this book to explain more about what’s to come, but it really was just a bunch of rambling. This is the first book of Jennifer’s I won’t be immediately re-reading. I am looking forward to the war between two queens. I really wish she would’ve released that book instead. The only thing we did receive clarity on is the prophecy Alister was afraid of.

Shadow of what??
I’ll give this review a 4 stars for trying, but a 2 overall. I’m deeply disappointed in Shadow of an Ember. Story was extremely hard to follow, the inner monologue was draining, and the temper tantrum’s Sera threw were exhausting.
I kept wanting to go back and re read FAAB because this is supposed to be set in the same realm but when? Is the primal god Nikos the sleeping god in the other series? Some elements were similar but not enough to actually be from the same realm. Then I kept thinking, is this the prequel- and if so- how? I ask b/c I just could not follow the dang story line.
Also, the use of modern terms was unbelievable. The like ness to modern terminology was annoying and unbelievably.
And lastly, the use of the same narrator was too similar for me. Which doesn’t usually bother me when reading from the same narrator but when it’s a new series you should switch.
That isn’t a dig at a narrator, she was great at what she did, it’s a dig on the author for choosing the same.
I hate that this review could possibly deter other readers. But I need to be honest. It wasn’t the best beginning to what I felt was going to be a great series.

It’s not FBAA but I still enjoyed it
It’s very similar to FBAA in the beginning. And the use of the same narrator doesn’t help. I wish they had used a different narrator. Nyktos is no Casteel but I’m still interested in his and Serafina’s story. Enjoyable but not on par with FBAA

It was okay
I had a really intense sense of deja vu throughout most of this book. In my opinion there were way too many parallels to the FBAA storyline and I kinda get why she wrote it that way but there were so many points where I felt like I had read/listened to the story already.
I also found Sera to be extremely unlikeable and immature. It was really a struggle to get through her inner monologue. She also made so many stupid decisions and had the worst attitude about it. I really couldn’t stand her but I did like Nyktos for the most part.
I liked the narration for the original series but I felt like she made some weird choices for voices in this book and every time she said the word “eather” I wanted to throw my phone at a wall. I don’t remember it being that irritating in the other books but maybe it just didn’t make that many appearances before.
Overall the book was just okay and some stuff was revealed that’ll come up in book 4 but I honestly don’t think you’d be missing out on anything if you skip this one.

Exploration of pre-history
The senario runs similar to Blood & Ash where a young maiden is sequestered and trained for a pre-planned outcome. The story takes place mostly in the immortal world of the gods where we are introduced to the author’s created world history and to many more god types. There is a mystery that threads through the story. There is not a powerful romance (yet) in this first book, as the main female character’s go-to response to situations is anger with uncontrolled violent outbursts. She comes across as a ridiculous brat. I am expecting that her sharp edges will soften in subsequent books. Learning about Nyktos and his world was interesting however the narrator did not give him his deep godly voice so it was difficult to imagine him as a god. He sounded more like a teenager trying to calm down Sera’s raging tantrums. There was an abundance of particulars about the author’s immortal world that at times for me required a listening repeat. I imagine that I will give book two a try as I love JLA’s writing and I expect that there will be exciting times to come.

Outstanding
Never have I ever written a review but this book… listening to it felt like being churned in a sea pushed by a tsunami, just to be spewed out to the shore with mouth full of sand, surprised to feel so alive. It’s riveting, gripping and absolutely enthralling. Jennifer L Armentrout is a magician with words and with the worlds she creates, even more astonishing are her characters. And Stina Nielsen is the narrator of the century, her voice and the way she brings story and the characters to live is absolutely second to none.

Exceptional audio and addictive story
I'm awestruck, speechless and utterly mind-blown by all the revelations, story depth and new roads to unfold in front of this series with ASITE. This book brought the Blood and Ash world to a whole new level and dimension and all the romance fantasy lovers should read it and discover all the awesomeness that is to come further in this series.
The audio version was exceptional and Stina Nielsen did an amazing job narrating this book. She brought all the emotions to another level and made this experience even more unique. Perfect combination between story and audio performance.
I was really excited to see how this story will complement the Blood and Ash world but I was not prepared for everything that went down. The tangle of questions unfolded in some areas and in some I’m left with even more riddles to sort out. I’m intrigued and curious how this complex puzzle will be sorted out eventually.
ASITE brought so many new characters to life and they were just as equally loveable as all the others we’d met in the previous books. But the main surprise for me were the main characters.
Sera - she was one of the toughest, bravest and smart-mouthed female Jen has ever written. But at the same time, she had that vulnerable side to her that made you sympathize with her and justify some of her not well-thought actions. And she had so many secrets kept hidden, uncovering her true story would be like unwrapping a well-packed present – exciting, unexpected and surprising.
Nyktos – he was a force to be reckoned with and I was expecting to see him destroy enemies with power and authority. We’d met him briefly in the previous books and he was always mentioned with fear, awe and in reference to someone cold, unforgiving and formidable. What I wasn’t prepared was to see his vulnerable side and look under his frightening façade to the loving and caring man he was. He surprised me on so many levels and there were some twists in his background story that I didn’t see coming at all. He was also funny, witty and was not be crossed in regards to his people cause he was ready to bring justice and fire over those who wronged his loved ones.
Both Nyktos and Sera were true soulmates and complemented each other on so many levels. Their unexpected encounters at the beginning made me grin stupidly. But then their passionate romance swallowed me completely and absolutely sealed the deal for me. I fell in love with that couple and I’m so excited to see how their lives will unfold and join with the rest of our beloved characters from Blood and Ash.
The battles were epic and I had a few nail-biting moments, but the ending was the cherry on the cake and now with all the big revelations, I’m even more excited for the next chapter in this series and uncover more of the mystery behind each character and their role in this spectacular world.
Do not get this book lay in the shadows cause the ember inside the pages would start the true fire that is to come further on the road of this journey. I solemnly proclaim JLA the Goddess of High Fantasy to have created such complex and divine world and characters! This series continues to stake claims in this genre and it’s the best to have come out

A little bit of a copy or rehashing of the other books as you can recognise the characters but nonetheless very enjoyable

I really want to like it more.
I loved FBAA and really enjoy Stina’s narration, so I was expecting to love this book. It’s VERY similar in story and tone to blood and ash, which is understandable, but a little frustrating. I found the dynamic and banter between Ash and Sarah predictable, we’ve already seen it all with Poppy and Hawke.
Lots of holes and lazy storytelling, like the main character keeps “forgetting” to ask the most important questions but will ask many other inane questions about “how do you age? How do you feed?” Also I found Ash to be very obviously written by a woman. At least Hawke had some character flaws to make him more meaty. Ash is this tall muscled tough guy with extreme power and lived for ages, but he’s also a virgin that finishes in his pants and lets Sarah get away with anything.
If you like JLA then buy it, but I wasn’t enthralled and struggled to like it!

Entertaining enough
I found myself questioning whether this book went through any sort of editing process. It seems a bit lazily written, or perhaps rushed. But it was an entertaining read nonetheless.

slow to start. Still a great book
So I read the reviews before I purchased and whilst I can see the similarities between the Blood and Ash series I still felt it was different enough for its own series. it was a bit slow to start but once it got going it was highly enjoyable!! I felt Ash and Sera were very different characters than Castiel and Poppy which was a good thing even if Sera was a bit frustrating at times you could understand it.
I can't wait to see what evolves in the next book as the end left me craving more, needing more.
the narrator does a fabulous job too!!

Very enjoyable book to listen to during my swing
Really enjoyed this and was really disappointed when it ended. I often listen to books when driving from point A to point B for work and this book made the trip so much easier
