Publisher's Summary

Merry Christmas to all! And, to all a good fright...

The Quarrel of Sword and Bone was a death sentence for anyone who stepped into the arena with the deranged Queen, whose soul had crisped to frost in an age long since past.

Sixteen-year-old Helen Bell understood tragedy better than most kids growing up—she knew what it was like to wear clothes from donation bins and be mocked by the beautiful girls in school. She thought these brutal experiences made her ready for anything. But, she wasn't ready for this. After an eccentric girl opens Helen's eyes to let her see the realm of winter—a world with intersects tucked carefully into the cracks of our own, where monarchs have risen and fallen, it's forbidden to mention the name of the dead king of winter, and the currency is gold rings—Helen comes to realize the downtown confrontation was more significant than what the eccentric girl let on. When Helen receives a summons from the Crimson Court to enter into the Quarrel of Sword and Bone, a traditional duel performed before 1,000 witnesses that leaves only one survivor, she's forced to finally pay attention to the boy who's been following her around with a warning on his tongue.

With an underlying Christian message of hope, the Winter Souls series blends action and Christmas tradition, bringing the old forgotten tales of the season to life with new and grittier versions of famous characters out of old holiday legends, such as St. Nicholas, the Snow Queen, and the Nutcracker.

A Soul as Cold as Frost is Jennifer Kropf's debut novel, ideal for fans of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms by Meredith Rusu and Ashleigh Powell.

"Wow, I loved this book! This book was a magical twist between Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and Spirited Away, yet somehow read as effortlessly original. The descriptions are vivid and really make you feel like you're freezing, trudging through snow, or drinking the best hot chocolate of your life. It was gripping, fast paced, and full of action, yet not lacking in heart. High recommend for young YA readers upwards." (USA Today best-selling author Alice Ivinya)

"The Chronicles of Narnia meets Harry Potter. This fantastic winter tale is the perfect blend of classic portal fantasy and the magical world co-existing with our own. This magical Christian fantasy adventure totally hits the spot and got everything right. It is a beautiful reminder of what is truly important in life." (USA Today best-selling author Astrid V. J.)

"A Soul as Cold as Frost instantly transports you into a magical world that the whole family will adore. Fans of Chronicles of Narnia will be thrilled with this new wintery adventure!" (Nikki Mitchell, author of Nightshade Forest)

"Wow! I can't believe this is Jennifer Kropf's debut novel. The writing is absolutely stunning and the characters are so easy to fall in love with. Fantasy isn't my usual genre, but I could not put this book down. I loved letting myself get lost in the wonderful world this author created. 5 out of 5 stars, without a doubt." (Heather Garvin, author of Take What You Can)

Do you love YA fantasies with Chronicles of Narnia vibes? A Soul as Cold as Frost, book one in the Winter Souls series, will probably be a perfect fit for you.

Interesting and Different

I enjoyed this book, my first by this author but having listened to this one I am now eagerly awaiting being able to listen to the second book. From the beginning I was hooked, the author has woven into the story enough action, and mystery to satisfy any reader/listener. The authors writing style is good, we are given lots of information and the characters are beautifully drawn. But what I did enjoy was that I was kept guessing about what was to come.

It's a truly enjoyable story set in a wonderfully described winter wonderland

I was given this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

Impressive!

A Soul as Cold as Frost is a brilliantly written and wholly captivating story. It's beautiful with descriptive and vivid imageries; I was literally sucked into Jennifer Kropf's innovative world. She is an absolute talent, and with her masterful storytelling and writing, she left a long-lasting impression. Her world-building and character development are phenomenal and refined. The storyline is utterly riveting, exciting, and enchanting; I listened to just over twelve hours in one sitting; that's how captivated and enthralled I was.

Mia Hutchinson-Shaw did an excellent job with the narration. She was able to breathe life into the characters and Kropf's words. A Soul as Cold as Frost is an impressive start to The Winter Souls series, and I can't wait for the second installment. I'm highly recommending this audiobook.

Winter themed adventure

I listened to this book in April, and I think I would have really enjoyed it better around the winter season. Overall it's a good book, great story, very action-packed (although I personally didn't expect that). The author did a great job and had some very creative ideas about all kinds of winter myths. The narrator was also great, she managed to pull off individual character voices.

Magical Mix of Fantasy, Christmas & C.S. Lewis

Parents- PG13
Language- Bloody (some British character dialogue), but otherwise pretty clean, no f-bombs
Violence- normal to genre - battles and some minor detail but not overly graphic
Sexual Content- none

The story itself was as much of a masterpiece as the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! It has elements and I think just the feel of that C.S. Lewis classic to it. Either way I loved it and can't wait to see where this new series will go. The wardrobe element comes through in the two different dimensions that collide and pull Helen into a realm of fantasy with Christmas undertones, fantasy creatures, a C.S Lewis style Christian theme and an incredible adventure that pulls you in with Helen. I loved the world building in this book and the characters are really well done too. I definitely recommend this one for most ages, it may not hold the littler kidos attention and might be a little too violent for those under 3rd grade reading.

The narrator did a fantastic job with the voices, differentiation, acting and even a little singing. My only issue was that the narration felt slowed down, I found that issue completely fixed by putting it on 1.35x speed.

be prepared to feel the frost...

I've read the book, but listening to Mia Hutchinson-Shaw read has made the experience of the book so much more. Her 'voices' are even better than what I'd imagined in my own head while reading, and she paces her speech well. Love it!!

I won a copy of this audiobook; the review is my honest opinion.

A Delicious Christmas Cup of Fantasy

I’ve had my eye on this book for two Christmas seasons but never have the time at that festive season to read anything. So, as soon as the audiobook came out, I jumped at the chance to immerse myself in a delightful Christmas read out of season. It didn’t dampen my experience.

Jennifer Kropf has a poetic style of writing that slides like hot chocolate down the throat, warm and gooey in a good way. There is an abundance of adjectives throughout that occasionally distracted me from the action but otherwise the writing is solid. Her prose is ideal for a Christmassy read, strongly reminiscent of Narnia, with solid world-building and vivid settings.

As Helen Bell is whisked into a wintry adventure, from snow squatches, to trains, to magic libraries, frost giants, dwarf dwellings, red palaces, and more, Mia Hutchinson-Shaw provides a stunning array of unique voices in delightful accents.

Faith lies at the center of this story, melding fantasy with hints of the first Christmas story is an intriguing and beautiful way.

My one real gripe is Helen herself, our allegedly book-smart heroine who keeps bumbling in huge ways for over half the book. I wanted to like her more then I did, as she has a relatable story—but her inability to listen to Zane even in the simplest things irritated me quite a few times. (Stop waving the orb around and hold still!) She does grow, mind you. I just would’ve liked to see her smarts a few more times early on.

Overall, it was a fun adventure and I’m looking forward to listening to the next book upon its audio release. In particular, I’m looking forward to Zane’s return. He was easily my favorite character.

THIS IS A GREAT STORY AND I LOVED IT

THIS STORY IS WELL WRITTEN AND EASY TO FOLLOW. IT HAS A BIBLICAL ALAGORY THEME WITHOUT THE LION, WITCH AND WARDROBE.

ACCEPTABLE FOR TEENS AND MATURE AUDIENCES.

NARRATOR IS GREAT AND EASY TO FOLLOW.

Winter wonderland!

This novel is very much Alice in Wonderland meets Narnia meets The Nutcracker with a fantasy twist!
The reader follows Helen Bell. Helen is no stranger to secondhand clothing and being put down by others. But one day, a stranger who opens her eyes to the new world beyond the world she lives in handed her an orb.

A new realm, The Realm of Winter. With a crooked Queen, The Dead King, and a fight to the death in The Quarrel of Sword and Bone, this novel gives any fantasy lover exactly what they need!

I really enjoyed this novel, the characters were well developed and the winter wonderland sounded mystical. I thought the beginning was slow, but once into the Realm of Winter, this book picks up!
