Story
Hollywood has sent its emissaries to New Iberia Parish to film a Civil War epic in the steaming mists of the Louisiana bayou, reawakening the ghosts of a past best left undisturbed. The restless specters wait in the shadows for Cajun cop Dave Robicheaux as he hunts a serial butcher who is preying on the less-than-innocent young. For these spirits are the guardians of Robicheaux's darkest torments, and they hold the key to ultimate salvation - or a final, fatal downfall.

Dave Robicheaux felt the bone-grinding pain rip through his body as the .45 did its damage. Through the agonizing haze that enveloped him, he heard an almost inhuman laugh - the hideous, victorious cackling of Jimmie Lee Boggs - a sound he would never forget. It had started out as an ordinary prisoner transfer, then turned into a blood bath when the convicted murderer got hold of a gun.

Story
The American West in the early 1960s appears to be a pastoral paradise: golden wheat fields, mist-filled canyons, frolicking animals. Aspiring novelist Aaron Holland Broussard has observed it from the open door of a boxcar, riding the rails for both inspiration and odd jobs. Jumping off in Denver, he finds work on a farm and meets Joanne McDuffy, an articulate and fierce college student and gifted painter. Their soul connection is immediate, but their romance is complicated by Joanne’s involvement with a shady professor who is mixed up with a drug-addled cult.

John Grisham is the acknowledged master of the legal thriller. In his first collection of novellas, law is a common thread, but America’s favorite storyteller has several surprises in store. “Homecoming” takes us back to Ford County. Jake Brigance is back, but he’s not in the courtroom. In “Strawberry Moon,” we meet Cody Wallace, a young death row inmate only three hours away from execution. The “Sparring Partners” are the Malloy brothers, Kirk and Rusty, two young lawyers who inherited a once prosperous firm when its founder, their father, was sent to prison.

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Publisher's Summary
Cajun police detective Dave Robicheaux knows the Sonnier family of New Iberia -- their connections to the CIA, the mob, and to a former Klansman now running for state office. And he knows their past - as dark and murky as a night on the Louisiana bayou.
An assassination attempt and the death of a cop draw Robicheaux into the Sonniers' dangerous web of madness, murder and incest. But Robicheaux has devils of his own. And they've come out of hiding to destroy the tormented investigator - and the people he holds most dear.
Filled with the usual Burke combination of brilliant action and a stunning novelistic theme, A Stained White Radiance will keep Burke's fans riveted -- and win him many new ones.

I hate abridged books, there is no excuse for this
Would you try another book from James Lee Burke and/or Will Patton?
I love James Lee Burke. I love Will Patton. I had no idea I was getting an abridged book (my fault) but I could not finish it. DO NOT BUY THIS ABRIDGED BOOK
Would you ever listen to anything by James Lee Burke again?
I love James Lee Burke's book and love to listen to them. I will listen to another that is not abridged. I wish there was some way to get my money back for this.
How could the performance have been better?
Do not abridge his books
What character would you cut from A Stained White Radiance?

Abridgements should be banned!
What would have made A Stained White Radiance better?
An unabridged performance.
If you’ve listened to books by James Lee Burke before, how does this one compare?
Hard to tell because it is abridged - and badly abridged as well.
What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?
I like the voice he give to Robicheaux...
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Stained White Radiance?
Too much has already been cut! The story line is hard to follow in many places because of clumsy abridgment.
Any additional comments?
Skillful abridgment should leave the plot intact and characters fully formed. This abridgment does not accomplish that feat.

Abrridged version Lacking in content and ending
This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Nobody as there really was no ending... It just ended.
Has A Stained White Radiance turned you off from other books in this genre?
No I really like the author.
Did Will Patton do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Stained White Radiance?
I would not have cut any...
I would have added some more content
Any additional comments?
I made a mistake. I bought the abridged version by accident.
It was so short that I could not even figure out the ending. It just seem to stop and that was it.
I would like to download the Unabridged version at some point in time to try and decipher the final chapter.
