Publisher's Summary

A major new reissue of the work of a classic noir novelist. Throughout her career, Patricia Highsmith brought a keen literary eye and a genius for plumbing the psychopathic mind to more than 30 works of fiction, unparalleled in their placid deviousness and sardonic humor. With deadpan accuracy, she delighted in creating true sociopaths in the guise of the everyday man or woman. In A Suspension of Mercy, a masterpiece of noir fantasy, Highsmith revels in eliciting the unsettling psychological forces that lurk beneath the surface of everyday contemporary life.

What??

I enjoyed this very much. I was NOT ready for it to end but, clearly, the author was over it. It seemed she just got tired of writing and stopped. I was stunned that the story was over. Oh, well.. It was great while it lasted.

A quite entertaining story

I noted some reviewers seemed to feel the ending a bit abrupt, as if Highsmith ran out of steam. However I feel it ended quite well, and she deliberately crafted it that way,

Cynical enough

It’s a good mystery, not because things are necessarily mysterious but because one is never too sure of reality with these characters. Not my favorite book by Highsmith, but it’s a good listen, and Simon Vance as narrator does a good job.

Very gruesome, very lovely.

I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes Ms. Highsmith’s work. It looks like a first version of Gone Girl in 1967.

A wonderful stand alone novel

This is one of Highsmith’s novels from when she was at the height of her story-telling powers. Everything about the book is a satisfying pleasure.

It's OK...

This was kind of a mess for me. Much too long, cardboard characters and just a mushy plot. I guess the "suspense" was supposed to come from the uncertain mental stability of the main character, but I really just didn't care...he was ...vapid. Some of the reviews were 5s...so maybe I just really missed the boat.

Boring

The narration was superb but the story was dull. I kept waiting for it to improve but it simply didn’t.

A great listen

A classic old fashioned mystery kept me listening until the end.
I’ve always been a fan of Patricia Highsmith, and the narrator did her justice.
I’m definitely going to listen to more audiobook versions of her work. Thank you Audible for putting this in the plus catalogue

Quite boring

This was one of those books that I found terribly boring... Until the last chapters. I actually liked the ending a lot. So overall I give it a 3, although 80% deserves 2 and then 20 % 5. All characters are really weird, no one acts as a normal person would in a certain situation. Also, no one is particularly likable. Performance was good. It is not worth a credit, but as a free book it is an OK pick.
