Publisher's Summary

Soon to be a Netflix animated series!

The New York Times best-selling debut by Adam Gidwitz, the Newbery Honor-winning author of The Inquisitor's Tale.

“A wonderful sense of humor and narrative voice…completely fresh and unique.” (Rick Riordan, number one best-selling author)

Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm (and Grimm-inspired) fairy tales. An irreverent, witty narrator leads us through encounters with witches, warlocks, dragons, and the devil himself. As the siblings roam a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind the famous tales, as well as how to take charge of their destinies and create their own happily ever after. Because once upon a time, fairy tales were awesome.

Author narrated, creative language, pretty dark

Didn’t finish it. We enjoyed his previous series; unicorn rescue society. Though it is a very creatively written book, and well narrated, I’m returning it as i found it inappropriate & unnecessary for my child to be listen to something with such disturbing visual language. Decapitation, a handsome man luring away a very young innocent girl, sucking her blood. My child doesn’t need that in their head.

truly dark and grim but satisfying

there's some pg gore, but the narrator warns you before it happens. I liked the story. It keeps you uneasy till the end, and it ends satisfyingly. It dealt with life lessons without being too serious nor depressing. A good read, but totally not for crazy parents.

Still love this story

I may be 20 years old but I still find this story to be incredibly amusing and funny. I read to it once when I was a kid and I loved it. The commentary still makes me laugh.

Amazing narrator. Gruesome

We love the podcast by this author, Grim, Grimmer Grimmest, and really enjoyed this book. It's amazing that he can make such a gruesome story so enjoyable. That being said this is way Grimmer than any of the stories in his podcast. There were times when I kept thinking to myself "I can't believe I'm letting my kids listen to this" and yet he narrates in such a way that it's not scary and it's absolutely entertaining.

Definitely recommend, but with a huge caution for those that are less comfortable with really gory imagery.

The End.

I found the author's habit of saying, "the end" when it wasn't annoying. The author's attempt at humor felt more like the author was talking down to the reader, which to a middle school reader is the kiss of death. A familiarity with popular fairy tales is helpful b but not neccessary. I did enjoy the weaving together of the various tales . I also had an issue with time, all of these different stories happened sequentially, over a period of what seemed to be years, yet the were still children?

A story best when heard

We relate to life through stories. Perhaps homosapiens don't need these today. People still do

a funny and creative

Love when the narrator is the author of the book. This story is a funny and creative twist on the Hansel and Gretel story.

Not what I expected, but good.

It was definitely weird. I probably should have expected it to be different, but the story cadence took some getting used to, especially with the way the chapters "ended" the story every time. Solid narration and overall decent.

Amazing

This book was one of the best books I have ever heard and read. I am 11 years old and my name is Zoë from GSB. I loved all the comments and the humor and I hope that soon in the unicorn rescue-society they will rescue a unicorn.😂
