Publisher's Summary

A medieval adventure for young adults, A Tale of Light and Shadow is the story of a boy struggling to become a courageous and honorable man and a girl who is desperately in love with him despite her father's disapproval. The audiobook chronicles the extraordinary tasks their adventure asks of their band of five friends and how those demands can overwhelm and break the bonds of friendship.

Enter Atolas, a world where swords and daggers both extend life and end it, where magic is feared by all but a few, and where feuds and friendships influence kingdoms and courtships.

Henry and Isabelle have secretly sworn to marry despite his lowly station. Though Henry is but a carpenter, his devotion drives him to commit an unthinkable act that may cost both of them their lives. At the same time, a secret, dark prophecy has set in motion events that will affect not only them but the thrones of rulers throughout all of Atolas, threatening to eclipse the world in shadow. But all is not lost while hope remains in the guise of an unlikely hero and the strength of friendship.

Excellent storytelling and writing!

Reads like a classic novel leaving out the sex and language in so many modern romances. I was hooked on the story pretty early on. Well written and performed.

HUGE LET DOWN!

Author published the 2nd book 6 years ago and still has not put out the 3rd book. There is no ending to this story. 6 years is way too excessive to wait for another book! Once you commit to a series you should finish it!

starts out very, very slow...

wasn't sure I'd be able to stick with it. but around the 16th chapter it got a bit better. by the second part it kept my attention, for the most part.

Struggled to continue the story.

I usually give books a good amount of time to capture my interest. I have to say with this book it was a struggle. By chapter 25, I still was not invested in the story and there was still a good amount of story left.

This might be a good book for some but definitely not for me.

A journey worth taking

Kudos to the author for giving me a pleasant surprise with this novel. The first quarter of the book had me doubting whether I could become invested in the characters... I'm glad to say I was very wrong. My investment crept up on me like a tiger in the grass and I ended up loving where the story took me and how the characters were fleshed out. The narrator also did a great job with representing said characters with different accents and tones, though the women's voices were initially a bit cringe-inducing, it's half expected when the narrator is male and you do get past it pretty quick. The only real con I would mention is the lack of world-building in the novel, but I honestly think it didn't detract from the impact the story had in the end. Overall, I would highly recommend this listen.
